The right choices were the ones made by the local farmers, before we were convinced by the outside that the only choices for the community were tourism dollars. I have lived here for my entire life, and I remember not that long ago, when the farmers all grew tobacco and tomatoes, corn, hay and most of whatever staples would grow well. My community of spring creek 10 mi. south of here, had numerous businesses in the form of good country stores that served us well, a tomato packing company that everyone I knew worked at in some form, and a high school that I was the last graduating class from. All that is no more.. nowadays the only thing we have to look forward to are every car club, bicycle club, motorcycle in WNC, and tourists who act as though it id Dodge city Kansas during the Earp days open house to whatever they want. At my house by dinnertime I can see 100 M.C.'s go by, some speeding well above the limit- same with sports cars, and people who seem to not have enough time to get where they're going. Passing right by without dropping any tourist dollars into the economy except gas and food at either two stores, that long ago were five stores, all in constant business. So yeah , I am glad I grew up with the farmers of my youth, and will go with them, over every tourist in the U.S. I won't even get started about worrying over the climate.
