    Just built this in PC version 1.8.3, and after a few tweaks to the design as depicted here it's working great. A couple of notes if anyone is doing the same:
    - Like others we had the redstone issue where the front two pistons worked as expected, but the other three would go down but not back up. I added three more repeaters, one at the end of each branch of the circuit to the other pistons, after that all of the pistons would behave as expected.
    - We opted for the water elevator and drop instead of the crusher design for the delivery mechanism. With the water elevator built as depicted in the video, the skeletons would not 'swim' up the elevator and would just drown at the bottom. Leaving the signs at the bottom in place same as the video, we put a sign every other block on the way up instead of a single sign at the halfway point. After that, the skeletons would swim up the elevator as expected.
    Our spawner was visible above ground, just inside a small cave in a taiga biome. We dug out what we needed to build the spawner room and elevator/drop shafts, then when we were sure the whole thing was working, we bricked up most of the workings and relaid dirt over the top, so only the top 7/8ths of the shaft is visible above ground and the 'harvesting' area is accessible by a tunnel built over from a nearby hidey hole. The top of the tower makes for a nice landmark from a distance. :)
    Thanks for the inspiration!

      +FastFlyingVirginian Another note on recent versions is that I'm fairly sure the spawn area has been enlarged to the full 9x9.

      +Sokar the wiki says that version 14w26c (released as part of 1.8) changed the spawn point to become centered on the spawner block. The area is still the same but it is now properly centered, meaning they spawn in an area of 9x9 blocks.
      minecraft.gamepedia.com/Monster_Spawner -> "Mechanics" and "History" sections.

    • @SokarEntertainment
      @SokarEntertainment  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      "A monster spawner is only active when a player is within a radius of 16 blocks from the spawner. While the block is active, it will spawn mobs within an 8×3×8 block volume (8 wide, 8 long, and 3 high) centered on the center of the block, effectively meaning mobs can spawn in a 9×9 area, or 3.5 blocks from the spawner. Mobs can spawn anywhere in this range that is suitable, with mobs more likely to spawn closer to the spawner than farther away."
      This is what it says, and what it says is that everything is as its always been. The thing is, the reason why its this weird way, is because of the way orientation works in the game. Just like how some redstone contraptions back in the day only worked, if aligned a certain way.
      Its saying, that if you look at the very center of the cages. not the cage itself, and make a 8x8x3 box around it, that would translate to a 9x9x3.5 blocks in the game world. However becomes of the alignment, this gets shifted in directions mentioned. So in the game you get what is said in the video.
      Its confusion as well, and bad game design in my opinion. If I were to make a spawner now, the only way I'd bother trying to figure directions and do the 8x8 room, is because it is easier to do lighting for. With lamps this is no longer the case, so in todays game, I'd just go 9x9, simply because its easier to deal with :)
      I will note though, that escape area (as I call it in my cage science video) appear to have changed from 17x17x9 (the area of which the mobs has to leave, in order to prevent the cage from capping after 6 monsters), to 9x9x9.
      This means that making spawners with cages has become a lot more space efficient :)

    Replacing the pistons with redstone lamps did the trick! In order to not mess up the original design too much I replaced the repeater at the top with a comparator and had to use extra repeaters to keep the current strong enough to reach all the lamps. I had to place 3 blocks above the mob funnel inside to cover up the extra wiring and haven't seen any noticeable drop in spawning rates.

    Hey, whats up man? I just wanted to say that I tried this build out in survival and it came out amazing. At first I had a few problems with some of my pistons not retracting after going down (with the light system) but after a few tweak I got it to work perfectly. The spawning times are great and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Great job, dude. Btw, that light system is pretty damn genius lol. Thanks, again!

    Best spawner tutorial I've seen. Thanks!
    Some questions:
    1. What is your motivation for using the redstone crusher vs the gravity drop? The gravity drop seems like a much simpler setup (although less compact) and has the advantage of no "redstone lag" that many multiplayer servers experience.

    This works great for the crusher, but I had to substitute the piston lights for redstone lamps, as the lighting provided when the spawner was "off" wasn't sufficient to stop mobs from spawning. Redstone lamp ceiling does the trick. A shame, as I thought it might be a cost efficient way of getting a spawner going early in a server build, before you've really hit the nether.
    thanks for the design though!

    Just a quick tip, instead of haveing the water elivator as one piece of water.. try to put signs down... like signg water, sign water sign water.. not sure if your seen other traps on youtube, or if you already have done this, but yeah.. just a tip :) i did it after finishing this one you show here. and they arrive the top much quicker :) sry for bad grammar, norwegian school, sucks :)

    Well you could always download Risugami's Spawner GUI mod, he's also the one who made the mod called ModLoader, which is needed for a lot of the mdos out there. Plus if you get it from the minecraft forums then it's on the exact same page as for the ModLoader so no extra hassle. Or you could go ahead and do what the creator suggested and dig out the area around the spawner. Whichever you find easiest.

    Assuming they are getting to the tube ok, at least one block in the tube doesn't have a source block of water. You must dump a bucket of water into each block up (not just the top one). The sign in the middle allows a breath.

    If, at the time of spawning, 6 or more monsters of the block's type are present within a 17 × 9 × 17 area (17 wide and 9 high and 17 deep), centered on the spawner block, the spawner "poofs" without creating any monsters and then waits for the next cycle. However, if there are more of the mob outside of the specified range, then the monster spawner will continue spawning mobs indefinitely." I got this from the wiki.

  • @MrOneWolfe

    In your crusher setup have the skelies fall onto a half slab or fence so they dont take damage and should all be 1 hit kills :-)

    you find them in dungeons located underground. They're pretty rare, and most of them only spawn zombies.

  • @Drytchnath
    @Drytchnath 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    So built this, crusher still works great in 1.5.1 (using it on zombies) but 1 irritating problem is that the switch to turn the lights on/off doesn't fully work. Turning the lights OFF works fine, but the only pistons that retract when you turn them back on are the two side by side were the mobs are funneled through.
    I've tried repeaters and even broke and replaced the pistons but nothing works.

    I re-watched the video more carefully. I now see the additional water blocks that must have been added off-screen between the transition at around 7:47. Thanks for your reply.
    As for #3, if you don't mind, can you elaborate on the "host of other problems" that are introduced by maximizing escape rate? I downloaded your models and plan to do some experiments. You have the best understanding/analysis of spawners that I've ever seen, so I'm very interested in your thoughts on the matter. Thanks!

  • @kanestevens8795

    you can do it without crushing em,
    if u add to your design u can drown them and stop them from rising as well,
    i would do a response but no recorder D:
    and my design also sends the loot back to base using only water!

  • @Blubbii88

    Great design and video sir! Thank you for being so thorough and explaining the game mechanics involved. With a few adjustments this always works great for me. I think anyone who is half decent at this game tweaks any build design to better suit their needs. For you guys saying it's too complicated it's not his fault you are idiots. He made visual aids explaining the game mechanics, wtf else do you want? Maybe you want someone to just come build your shit for you.

    Works just fine for me in 1.4.4 :)
    But as far as for the Gravity drop you need to have more than just one airpocket in the elevator, For me it works best to go every other block just so they will never drowned. :)

    that farm + splash potions of healing (on skeletons) = server crashes forever (if on a server)

  • @jakestockton4808
    @jakestockton4808 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The easiest way to kill them is with the drop method. Then hit them with a level one health splash potion. I usually get 2.5 lvl 30 enchants from a half hour of waiting. If you want to have more experience than you know what to do with, set up your home base right under the water transport path. Put your chests closest to the spawner and the drop off area on the opposite side of the room.

    The distance from spawner is 9 to keep spawning, but water in that configuration will only take them 8 from the spawner. You need at least one drop I guess, not sure how skeletons deal with that.

    Do the pistons up front need to be sticky? Mine just push the cobblestone (which I used in place of your iron blocks) into where they should be falling and then the stone just sits there when the piston retracts.

    • @DemeTheDevil
      @DemeTheDevil 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes if you use a piston and you want the block to retract you have to have a sticky piston the regular piston just pushes the block the sticky one on the other had will hold the block going out and back in

    I have a question to the areas of effect. You said I have to be in a circle around the spawner with a radius of 16. Now we are in 3 dimensions, does it matter? Is it a sphere around the mob spawner, or is it a cylinder? I ask it because until now I counted like when I count light levels. I build a snake from the light source to the place I am standing and the count of blocks I use is the "distance".

    2. In the minecraft wiki, the water elevator for the gravity drop trap example (/wiki/Tutorials/Monster_Spawner_Traps) uses a zig-zag pattern of water/signs. Any idea why that is done over your simpler straight-up method?
    Also, you didn't explain why the sign is needed midway up in your elevator.

    Do you have to place a water source block on ever block till the top? or do you just have to make sure there is water flowing all the way from the bottom to the top
