  • There's a rumor going around that when you get the epidural it can slow down your labor progress and lead to a longer labor and more medical interventions. Well, like most rumors there's some truth to it! When you use these positions and change positions frequently (at least every hour) you will increase your odds of still having a vaginal delivery, make labor go by a little quicker and decrease your odds of having to use medications like pitocin to to continue your labor or having to use a vacuum to assist you in pushing your baby out or a c-section because your cervix stops dilating (opening) or baby won't come down. Make sure you ask your labor and delivery nurse to incorporate the p-nut ball into your frequent position changes as soon as you get the epidural! And feel free to show her or your partner this video to get their assistance in helping you to get into the different positions! Let's get you that vaginal delivery the easiest way possible while you enjoy the pain relieving powers of the epidural! Also check out the spinning babies website for more positions (especially "side-lying release") to use when you have an epidural!

    I'm so happy you made this video. One of the number one things I wish I had done differently with my first was moving more or finding different positions while I had my epidural. All my docs and nurses made it seem like I had to stay put and couldn't do anything but lay back or be somewhat reclined. My anesthesiologist helped me sit more upright, which made me feel so much better, not any of the nurses. :(

    • @bethbodwell4434

      I probably would have loved the hands & knees position where you put your support more upright against the bed. I labored that way at home and it was way more comfortable and easier to breathe through contractions.

    Hey Haley! I just found your channel today, and obviously binged it all. 😆 I just got a positive test a few days ago after having a chemical pregnancy and trying for a year and a half after that, so my hubby and I are, of course, over the moon. I've been looking for videos that would educate me on all the basics of labor and delivery, things that everyone just seems to know because all their female friends and relatives went through it. Both my husband and I moved to the US later in life, so our moms, sisters and aunts went through this thing in different countries with very different systems in place at the time. I can't help but feel lost and uneducated in how everything works here, and most videos only touch the subject of delivery very lightly because people assume it's something you just know. Well, your videos are exactly what I've been looking for. Every step is explained, even the delivery room itself. Thank you so so much for creating this channel and filming all these videos. I'm sure there are people like me out there who don't know everything and maybe don't want to ask. You are so wonderful and caring, and I wish you could be my labor and delivery nurse. 🥰

    I'm 31 weeks with baby #2 and it has been 6 years since I had my first. I had an epidural the first time (and plan to again) but was so numb that i couldn't feel or move anything! My legs might as well have been detached, wet noodles. As a first timer, I didn't know what to expect but knew I wanted a difference experience the 2nd time around. I'm so glad I found your video/channel! It's reassuring to know i don't HAVE to feel like a bowl of mashed potatoes lying there and can take a more active role in laboring this time around.
    P.S. I love how "real" this video is. Legs open and see-through pants had me laughing!

    I had my first baby 6 years ago, I got an epidural and I absolutely couldn’t feel anything from the bottom half, couldn’t even lift up my legs on my own nurses told me it was normal, i “purple faced push as they call it” and I thought that was normal! Pregnant with my 2nd baby now I know it was not okay! I still want that epidural because me and pain do not mix but glad I know what it should be like!

    This was super helpful, good to know you don't get totally numb and can move with an epidural. To do all 4s position, does it need to be a light epidural or can it be regular? Also, I heard you need a catheter for urine, can you still move with it on you?

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101
      @PregnancyBirthParenting101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. It can be a "walking epidural" or a "regular epidural", but it can't be so heavy that you can't move, lift your legs or support yourself to push. If at any point you can't do those things then tell your nurse that you would like your rate lowered.

      You will get better with time and experience! And when you are new it’s hard to not focus so much on the strip! Ask some fellow nurses around you to help you with the hands on piece, because there are a lot of tricks to use the belts to keep the baby on. Another option would be to talk to your manager or supervisor about getting the Bluetooth monitors called Monica Novii.

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101
      @PregnancyBirthParenting101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question! Epidurals are actually called epidurals because they go in the epidural space in the back and bathe the nerves there taking away contraction pain without making you feel loopy, dizzy or sleepy like medications that go in through the IV into your vein and get distributed throughout your entire vascular system. Make sense?

    Why would sitting make your cervix and labia swell?

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101
      @PregnancyBirthParenting101  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! It has to do with water retention, extra blood flow to the area and gravity. They also give you a lot of fluid in labor, so that doesn't help the situation.

    I had an epidural and I couldn't feel not a single thing. I was sooo numb. I really now, with my second baby coming, that I was more numb than I would have liked to be. I couldn't feel my legs, nothing, it was like they didn't exist, only heavy dead weight. I dont want that to happen again. any advice? I think I do remember the nurses saying they wanted to turn th epidural down so I could feel more when It was ready to push but I was too scared. I ended up pushing for about 5-10 minutes. she came right out. I lead the pushing, I didn't need the nurse to tell me when the contraction was happening because I could feel a slight twinge in my uterus, but I def would like to feel it more. I didn't even feel pressure, no ring of fire, nada!! how do I go about this?

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101

  • @KhrystynaFedunkiv
    @KhrystynaFedunkiv 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was 3 centimeters dilated. And would not dilate more. I got myself up into the throne position. I asked my husband to help me adjust my legs into a Buddha position. And they told me I was not going to push until 6am. Between 10 p.m. and 2 am I went from 4cm to 10cm+2. By sitting up and letting the gravity pull the baby down. Also when I pushed I had my knees closer together and my feet sticking outwards. My baby was born in 20 minutes from the time i started pushing. There's also a small superstition in my culture. That when a woman gives birth she should be giving birth in her natural state. Meaning no metals on your body or scrunchies. It's a silly superstition but at 10:00 p.m. I took off everything. From earrings to rings to scrunchies. Maybe it's the belief of it that it works but after that my experience went much smoother and faster. 😅

    Eat a little snack? They didn’t let me eat anything until an hour after I gave birth. Ice chips only. I was in labor 27 hours and then had to have an emergency c section after all that. Plus my epidural must have been too high because I could only wiggle my toes. 😢

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101
      @PregnancyBirthParenting101  ปีที่แล้ว

      i’m sorry to hear that you were birth and did an emergency C-section. I’m sure that was pretty traumatic for you. On the subject of eating… There is more research that supports eating in labor than there is the risk of eating in labor with the possibility of a C-section. I know we want to follow the "rules", but ultimately you are the decision maker. They can tell you what the hospitals policies and procedures are in regards to eating in labor, but they can't make you follow them. I ate in all of my labors. The first one ended in an emergency C-section, the second one ended in a requested C-section and the third one ended in a VBA2C. (link to that video below👇🏼)

    • @heartmindbodybirth
      @heartmindbodybirth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PregnancyBirthParenting101 I know it's a peanut ball. ;) I'm an Authorized Peanut Ball Trainer and teach birth professionals how to use them. The ball needs to be firmly inflated in order for it to be stable. When it's under-inflated and wobbly like in the video, it increases the risk of injury to the person using it, especially someone with an epidural who cannot feel their legs. Even someone with feeling will have to constantly use their muscles to keep the too-soft ball in place, defeating the purpose of allowing them to relax.

    • @PregnancyBirthParenting101
      @PregnancyBirthParenting101  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great information to consider! We only use it a little deflated like that when we are doing an extended "Sims like" position because of its fully inflated then the p-nut tends to roll out and bounce on the floor (or maybe it's that their leg rolls off. 🤷🏼‍♀️). But yes, for every other position we want it to be fully inflated! Thank you for your comment! 👍🏼🤗😘
