My husband, a retired Nat Trust Administrator, was asked to stand in at Knole between administrators. For many months he occupied a small apartment in the vast house and after the crowds went home we would explore the areas not open to the public. I had never been that intrigued with ostentatious Knole until I cimbed the rickety stairs to the servants quarters. The iron frame beds were still there with their old sagging horse hair mattresses, a wooden peg for clothes and paperback books left open where the reader had abruptly stopped. I was told that when WW1 broke out these male servants had joined up, leaving immediately, thinking it would soon be over. The servants attic was dusty, cold eerie and frozen in time. There is another story in the attic waiting to be told.
That's interesting - thank you. I live near the Lewisham/Bromley border, and have visited Knole many times over the years. It just goes from strength to strength, as more rooms, furniture, furnishings, artefacts etc, are made available for us to enjoy.

I didn't know this is the location of the portrait of Wang-y-Tong! An absolutely fascinating figure, a naturalist and medical botanist. I highly recommend a read about him to anyone unfamiliar. I wish we knew even more about him.

I am happy to spill the beans here, but only as soon as I have worked this same joke into a forthcoming video on my currently dead, woefully poor TH-cam Channel over the forthcoming weeks. Now, just to be clear, I certainly do not claim to speak perfect English myself as I knowingly use several colloquialisms, but the one thing I will say is that I don't think I am constantly adjusting my language to suit my audience, be that turning it up to 11 if I should feel the need to dazzle, or turning it down to six if say for example I had to deal with somebody awful... I visited Knole a long time ago and remember it as being very dark inside, with furniture so old it was falling apart. The grounds are lovely. I much preferred my next stop, Vita Sackville-West's home at Sissinghurst with its many gardens.
One of the most beautiful and interesting houses and grounds in the UK, associated with so many well known inhabitants and so wonderful to go up the drive and see the historic building appear in front of you with its fabulous contents for all to see.....
no mention of the houses "nickname" of the calendar house, or the "knole sofa" ( of which i have one) the house has undergone a massive restoration and is a fabulous place to vist, even though my house backs on to the grounds , i open the gate at the bottom of the garden and slip into the deer park and take the dogs for a walk.
England has such beautiful medieval castles and estate homes. Too bad this one wasn't fully shown in this segment; I would've loved to see the rest of the house as well as the grounds/gardens. It good to know that the descendants still live in the house or, I hope so since this segment was filmed 5 years ago.

At one time there was a small book of the house. I gave the book to my mother--in-law and she probably gave it to her Italian daughter-in-law. I wish she had returned it to the British daughter-in-law, I.

All that beauty and magnificence and at what price? I shudder to think of all those who died, suffered, toiled & were abused to make it happen. For them this is a damnable place. But my heart is full of joy knowing they are now in a place more beautiful more magnificent then Knole could ever hope to be and not for life time but for all eternity. While those mortal gods of earth who created this palace of pleasure & greed will never ever see beauty again & curse this place as false and destroyer of men’s souls. For me this place reeks of greed, contempt for your fellow man and a lust for self pride. The elites might be more intelligent better looking have more money. But if they don’t get right with god & most don’t it’s an eternity of pain & suffering. For all of the meek on earth hold firm do not bow you head in shame as god has said we shall inherit the earth. I would rather suffer a life time of of pain, suffering, & abuse on earth for an eternity of ever lasting love & joy. This place called Knole must of been heaven on earth for the Sackville family. I hope most made it to the real paradise but I doubt it.

Kelly Mc you have to remember that these estates provided employment, accommodation and food for dozens, if not hundreds of people. Working in a great house was hard work, but certainly preferable to most of the other options available at the time.

The deer were hunted yes, but eaten, much like millions of cattle and hogs are slaughtered today for human consumption. Country living on these great estates wasn’t all that bad considering how awful the living conditions in the big cities were.

Yet 'class warriors' whine about unfairness and inequality. What is wrong with giving people a secure living and safe retirement? It's no different to the new rich like Richard Branson or Alan Sugar employing people, the aristocracy have just been doing it longer.

Hampton Court isn't so nice in person. The gardens are beautiful but the house had an eerie, oppressive atmosphere. I was glad to get outside even though it was raining.!
The thing that matters is that the building (especially its interiors), are architecturally important and far from tasteless; housing some of the finest furnishings and interior decoration the 17th century had to offer. For example it contains the most significant assemblage of textile-covered 17th century royal furniture in existence (Including state beds, chairs, sofas, stools etc), 17th century silver furniture (an extreme rarity to find remaining pieces), furniture from King Louis XIV, other 17th century furniture from the English Royal Palaces (including the lost Palace of Whitehall *once the largest in the world) and of course many other priceless items of interest: hundreds of master paintings, silver, porcelain, Flemish tapestries, silk hangings etc - not to mention the house itself with anything from exquisitely carved panelling from 1603 in the Ballroom, to the grand staircase (1605-1608) and surrounding Renaissance painted panelling (1603); serving as the entrance to the state rooms. *Note: almost all of these items have remained both untouched and unmoved for over 300 years (meaning they’re in such incredible condition) - which is an amazing achievement and such a rarity! I love Hampton Court also, as it’s such an interesting mix of late 17th century Baroque and late 15th/ early 16th century Tudor, but Knole is a real treasure house in itself and should be appreciated.

While those mortal gods of earth who created this palace of pleasure & greed will never ever see beauty again & curse this place as false and destroyer of men’s souls. For me this place reeks of greed, contempt for your fellow man and a lust for self pride. The elites might be more intelligent better looking have more money. But if they don’t get right with god & most don’t it’s an eternity of pain & suffering. For all of the meek on earth hold firm do not bow you head in shame as god has said we shall inherit the earth. I would rather suffer a life time of of pain, suffering, & abuse on earth for an eternity of ever lasting love & joy. This place called Knole must of been heaven on earth for the Sackville family. I hope most made it to the real paradise but I doubt it.

Most of these hoity toity money ppl are the same. Instead and would do anything to keep thier money. Power and money is all that matters.
Kelly Mc you have to remember that these estates provided employment, accommodation and food for dozens, if not hundreds of people. Working in a great house was hard work, but certainly preferable to most of the other options available at the time.
Spencer Wilton- Farming was the only other option and it was very hard work. Many ended up in debtors prison.

Sandy Beebe These great country houses supplied thousands with livelihoods. Just to build them kept hundreds of craftsmen and general laborers from starving. The deer were hunted yes, but eaten, much like millions of cattle and hogs are slaughtered today for human consumption. Country living on these great estates wasn’t all that bad considering how awful the living conditions in the big cities were.

@@patquint3291 It's the same now. Great houses like Chatsworth and Blenheim employ hundreds of people, which supports all their families, often for generations. They care for them in retirement. Yet 'class warriors' whine about unfairness and inequality. What is wrong with giving people a secure living and safe retirement? It's no different to the new rich like Richard Branson or Alan Sugar employing people, the aristocracy have just been doing it longer.

Hampton Court isn't so nice in person. The gardens are beautiful but the house had an eerie, oppressive atmosphere. I was glad to get outside even though it was raining.!
The thing that matters is that the building (especially its interiors), are architecturally important and far from tasteless; housing some of the finest furnishings and interior decoration the 17th century had to offer. For example it contains the most significant assemblage of textile-covered 17th century royal furniture in existence (Including state beds, chairs, sofas, stools etc), 17th century silver furniture (an extreme rarity to find remaining pieces), furniture from King Louis XIV, other 17th century furniture from the English Royal Palaces (including the lost Palace of Whitehall *once the largest in the world) and of course many other priceless items of interest: hundreds of master paintings, silver, porcelain, Flemish tapestries, silk hangings etc - not to mention the house itself with anything from exquisitely carved panelling from 1603 in the Ballroom, to the grand staircase (1605-1608) and surrounding Renaissance painted panelling (1603); serving as the entrance to the state rooms. *Note: almost all of these items have remained both untouched and unmoved for over 300 years (meaning they’re in such incredible condition) - which is an amazing achievement and such a rarity!
I love Hampton Court also, as it’s such an interesting mix of late 17th century Baroque and late 15th/ early 16th century Tudor, but Knole is a real treasure house in itself and should be appreciated.
