A series generator is a type of electrical generator in which the field windings and armature windings are connected in series. This configuration results in a generator that produces a high voltage and a low current output. Series generators are typically used in applications where a high voltage is required, such as in the generation of electricity for transmission over long distances. They are also commonly used in automobiles as an alternator, to charge the battery and power the electrical system while the engine is running.
Due to the series connection of the windings, the voltage generated is directly proportional to the number of turns of wire in the field and armature windings, which means that the voltage output can be easily adjusted by changing the number of turns in the windings. However, this also means that the current output will be lower and the internal resistance of the generator will be high.
Series generators are relatively simple in construction, and are relatively reliable, however, they tend to be less efficient than other types of generators, because of their high internal resistance.
