    Yay, was waiting for this.
Had never seen Gypsy either staged or on video. Went in early previews. I thought the production was too long. Act 1 dragged. I looked at my watch multiple times. I know that at least a few people felt the same based on what I heard at intermission.
Sadly I was underwhelmed by the production. Agree that Audra’s voice does not seem right for this role and it was discordant and took me out of it at times. The production didn’t move me.
I was quite surprised that this production got mostly raves. I was expecting more mixed reviews. I think people didn’t want to diss Audra. Yes, Audra is an icon, but I hope she does NOT win another Tony for this performance. Currently rooting for Nicole Scherzinger to win.

@@yankee04 I think people who have never seen Gypsy before will find your comment helpful! Act 1 is definitely very long. I did not feel it drag, but I realize that could be because of my familiarity with the material/anticipating what’s coming next. Do you remember which parts weren’t keeping your attention?
I’m sorry to hear this production didn’t do it for you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

@@BeforeItCloses I heard that there wee changes to make it fit for a black cast in the leads? which didn't sit right with me, its based on a real family, and real people that lived, and to add stuff to it that changes the story line to another narrative, doesn't work than don't do the show. Were there scenes that were from the out of town tryout or scenes that aren't usually in there? From the trailers, and some of the leaked audio they sound like they are in the south not from Seattle? But I felt so bad for Audra as far as the singing, they should have changed the keys to Ros's big songs so she wouldn't be struggling to hit those nigh Ethel Mermane notes. It was the same with Bennie and Funny Girl if your going in a different direction then the script calls for, the music director and the director should have in both cases changed the keys for their leading ladies, so that they can sing the score, and look Great out on the stage. Binnie was never going to sound like Barbra, or Leah Michelle. Also she did this cause the actor that just died told her to do it, and also told the Director to do it before he died, and i think you shouldn't do shows because other actors tell you to, especially if its a musical that has been staged 6 times and is about a caucation family. And the preview reviews were mixed from what I have heard. is it really 3 hours long with the intermission?

If you’ve never seen a production or video, then how do you know Audra’s voice didn’t fit the role? Your last paragraph shows why you said what you said.

Where did you hear they changed the book for a black leading cast? In interviews they’ve made it clear not a word was changed. And odd to go off on Funny Girl, this post is about this revival of Gypsy. Audra has no trouble hitting any notes, including being sick the other night with a cold. And yes, it’s three hours including an intermission, but other than the other commenter, nobody is watching their watch if you’re paying attention.

@@hummersd Not true. I do know that I didn’t like the operatic appoach in some songs. It was discordant.
