Repairing my 3d Printer - Lessons Learned

  • If you own a 3d printer, it will eventually break. In this video, I tell a story about how I thought my FDM 3d Printer was broken. Then I broke it trying to fix it. Then I thought I fixed it only to find it was never really broken.
    While this video uses the JG Maker Artist-D Pro as an example, the principles apply to any FDM style 3D printer such as the Ender 3, Ender 5, Prusa i3 MK3, ANET ET4/5, and others.

    Sorry for the litany of problems, but it did make for a good learning experience for your channel. I think we all learned something today. Back in my day working on DEC equipment - never assume anything. The PDP-8 was notorious for bad connections in the bus, but look for burned components and bad software.

    "Order parts ahead of time". 100% agree. Nothing more frustrating figuring what needs fixing and then having to order parts and wait for them to arrive. Obviously not major items but in my case things like heat block, heat break, heater cartridge and thermistor. Love your work :-)

    I have been messing with electronics since the 1950's, and yes indeed, bad connections are the problem at least 90 % of the time. When in doubt, just disconnect and reset everything. A friend once brought me a genuine Las Vegas one-armed bandit, which just went entirely dark, all at once. I opened it up, and all text inside it designating everything was Chinese or Japanese (I really couldn't differentiate). There were not less then 30 cable connections inside, and I pulled and reseated them all. When I turned it on, it worked. That's how I got my reputation as genius.

    Good information, I will add this. I have a Tenlog Pro IDEX and one of the issues I have had and still do sometimes because I forget is when I try to use the "Dual Mode" or the "Mirror Mode"
    if the project your printing is too big for the build plate " For Dual Printing" my printer will just start to print lines back and forth. The printer extruders would hit each other and so the printer does not know what to do and just prints stacked lines. I will move the project to the far left side of the build plate in the slicing software "For Dual or Mirror Prints" If that does not work I may need to make the project a little smaller, and that usually fixes the issue.

I've only been doing this for about 5 weeks and I was having a heck of a time last week, turns out it was a loose screw on the extruder which I swore I had checked but must have missed. It was causing small layer shift. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not in this boat alone. There are several online channels, groups and sources that have made this possible

      I’m following a couple RC 1/10th scale truck building channels where they recommended the i3 kit, so compared to working on RC kits , I found it rewarding and took a couple weeks of casually putting it together carefully following their excellent instructions with the online comments. But if I had the expectation that it was some assembly required and it would be up and running in a couple hours, then I agree it would have been painful and I would have likely made more mistakes trying to assemble it in one session.

    Hi, I love your videos. I have an Ender 5. Should I put away the reel of filament I was using once I finish a print? Should I cut it of at the extruder, or pull it out of the tube? etc? I haven't seen anyone mention this. What do you do/think?

    • @woodwaker1
      @woodwaker1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot depends on the type of filament and the time it will be idle. If it is PLA you are probably OK, PETG or ABS or any other water sensitive filament should be stored in a dry box.
      I usually am printing on my printers every day, but if not using them for a while I will remover the filament and store.

    Hey Irv, Thanks for great videos, quick lesson learned from me. I noticed a lot of under extrusion and i ensured all slicer settings had 100% extrusion and still got under extrusion. However, long story short, i cut short lengths of filament and pushed into the filament sensors, then i created a clip that goes over the top bar, one for each filament feed, then it acts as a guide and bypasses the sensor. No more under extrusion issues. I have a feeling it created just a little TOO much drag!

    • @krukhlis
      @krukhlis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a hint -- different filaments have different characteristics even if they say it's the same material( e.g. PLA, ABS, etc). You should always re-adjust your settings if you change filament. Even 2 different colors of the same e.g. ABS or Nylon from the same Vendor can have different E-Steps settings. Wrong E-steps will definetly result in over or under extrusion. Also, sometimes you need to have different than 100% flow setting for Cura to deal with the same issue.

    • @LucidFX.
      @LucidFX. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@krukhlis yeah definitely. I have used the same type of filament for the last 4 years. And printing since 2010. Even colors in some cases have different characteristics of the same brand

  • @krukhlis
    @krukhlis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is definetly a firmware bug and the vendor should fix it. But yes, the first step if you can't understand what's "suddenly" going on -- reset to default and do step-by-step setup, changing and checking 1 item per step. Also, the first thing I do when I buy new printer or when my friends ask for the help with their -- check hardware and electronics. I had fantastic experience helping my friend with chinease clone of the Ender3 that has 2 motors for Z-axis( Ender 3 has only one). And some *diot set different voltage( which means different current for motors) on drivers. It was 0.7V and 1.1V. Gues the behaviour of the Z-axis. 🤣 Also, one motor was extremally hot.
    Another situation was wrong stock GT2 belt routing for CoreXY-based printer. So the printer X axis and Y axis were moving ok in some directions and wrong in another.

    after going through thousands of problems, it lost its calibration, a Z motor froze,

    This sounds like pretty bad engineering. You do not change wiring like that without guarding against accidental use in a previous version (ex. by changing the connector and having some required gap at a certain position to mark the correct versions matching). That said, when in doubt, the first suspect should be the user (so you), the second is the software (so firmware or settings) and only then hardware. Now, I would expect that in your case the firmware (Marlin) should have given an error when trying to extrude with the second extruder if you would have sent gcode to it manually as it apparently should have been in a mode where it would think there's only 1 extruder (as the second would just mirror or clone). If Marlin doesn't do that while not allowing the control of it, I would expect this is worth a bug-report on Marlin.

    right now printers are almost there, but not yet. way too many variables for the average hobbyist. greed has caused a tidal wave of barely tested models that can be a source of great concern to most of us. maybe in a year or so, we'll see a more highly developed platform with greater reliabity. until then, only a dedicated tinkerer, would find pleasure in owning one.
