Hey it's you! I've been hunting for this channel since I met you at TooManyGames this year and you magically appeared in my recommended today! I was the redhead that talked with you and Russ about the RG35XXSP in the shop area. Great video, this ones a tempting buy for me but I just got the RP5 so I'll be waiting for a sale for sure.
my use case for this is to play gba games that I used to play as a kid just to relieve that nostalgia. but yeah I already have other devices that can do that but playing on this one can replicate that old feeling I have way back because it looks just like a gba that im familiar with.
Ya... I love how people are saying it's not worth it. But if you were WANTING a GBA. Compared to buying a moded GBA or moding one yourself $70 flat compared to $200ish bucks plush potentially an everdrive depending on the mod no thank you I'll buy this. If I didn't care about what I played on I could just as easily emulate on my psp, vita, or 3ds. Hell you could say why buy an emulator at all you could do it on your phone??? Plenty of point in saying I want to play GBA on a GBA and this is one of the cheapest best ways to do it enough said.
I ordered this the SECOND it went on sale. I literally had my timer on and everything lol. Jungle Green with the maximum amount of games. I’m even more excited getting this than I was the XXSP
I've been waiting for someone to make a handheld in GBA Glacier Blue. Literally any handheld in that color and I would get it (for a reasonable price). This was the absolute perfect opportunity to do that and Anbernic passed on it.
If these sell enough like the 35xx sp did then they will likely offer new colors in the future also. Hopefully that glacier blue. I love that color too.
I think what I love about these replication handhelds is that I don't have to mod or touch my old handhelds again. Not because I'm intimidated to try, but more because I feel like modding sort of violates what is to me a nostalgic bit of kit. Squinting at a Gameboy is part of the pain and charm of having these future antique museum pieces. But with these I can get close enough to that same feel. To play it like a GBA and handling it rough just like I used to, not caring about screen scratches or dropping it. And whilst having the luxury of a screen I can actually see.
Now this is the form factor that I want a high end model of. This and the SP. I would love the 406H/V specs in an SP and a GBA-life form factor. Pocketable and powerful are hard to come by. The Odin 2 Mini and RP Mini nail this, but have some traits that can be undesirable. The GBA SP and regular GBA form factors are perfect.
I love GB and GBA games. I was very close to ordering a RG35XXSP after the latest Nerd Nest podcast eventhougth I was disappointed by the clicky buttons. Later I discovered that the resolution was not a pixel perfect match for the GBA and decided to avoid it. For mainly GBA games this one is great.
@@FSAPOJake Because they were even clickier and noisier than the ones from the original SP and there are reports of the button plastic breaking holes in the tact switch metal membrane. That, combined with my preference for rubber membrane buttons, was almost enough for me to abstain from buying it.
Sometimes the number of systems on these cheap handhelds leads to analysis paralysis and can’t decide what to play; having a primarily GBA handheld will make it easier to enjoy the library.
I've always found the original GBA to be very comfortable, even in recent adult years, but the main reason I might pick this one up and try is the face buttons. The size and positioning and of the A and B buttons, which now become main buttons like in the GBA, cannot be overstated. Even though I understand the reasonings around it, I've always hoped someone would make a product with this arrangement of face buttons (and by the way, many retro games are fine with just 2 main buttons, even on 4-buttons systems like the SNES). Ironically, that's the only reason why I occasionally miss the Hyperkin Smartboy for! 😂
I very nearly bought this. If i hadn't already had too many handhelds, as well as an actual GBA lol. I'm my ot going to lie, it really pulls on my nostalgia heart strings.
The steam deck OLED can do 5x interger scale for GBA thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio. You fill the height, and there are just tiny pillars on the sides, which you won't notice on the OLED. This is the best GBA experience in my opinion.
A lot of reviewers keep saying GBA is the main thing you should play on this, and while I certainly plan to play GBA, I still plan to play lots of ps1 and Dreamcast. I almost never actually care about screen aspect ratio being perfect
My very specific use case would not just be for GBA emulation but also other two button systems as well as this layout seems nice for that. It's just a bit of a shame that any scaling (unless I go for stretching) on 4:3 or other square ish aspect ratios will make it smaller than it is on my 3.5 inch 4:3 screen on the rp2+ (yes I haven't upgraded, why do you ask? Kek).
It'll come down in price inevitably if past trends are any indication. That is, unless Trumps rumoured 40%/60% Chinese tarrifs come to fruition as feared.
was debating this or miyoo mini v4, went with the v4 since its more pocketable and quick resume sounds epic for onion os. I think the resolution is also slightly better at 750x560p but chip wise the rg34xx seems better for dc. Though I do appreciate that the mini can do up to ps1. :)
@@seethruhead7119 games that have years 20xx or 199x or 20x5 in the storylines like Super Godzilla, Earthbound, Megaman, og Metroid... Saying it as Nineteen ninety x or twenty xdx or twenty xdx, I understand it. I don't like it tho.
@@seethruhead7119 ah, you're right. How Phawx says it, it sounds like EX-DEE-EX instead of EX-TEE-EX. I still don't like it lol. I just forgo the double X and just say RG35x or the Cube X, etc. Instead of RG35XX SP, I just call it the Anbernic SP
Its an amazing device. You can't expect everything from a $70 device. But its built well and goes above an beyond a modded GBA which would cost you more than $200. what it does, it does very well.
Never liked the clamshell design. I still have my original GBA but don't really want to pay over $100 to mod the screen. The RG 34XX is ideal. I'm stoked for mine to arrive.
This is a cheap GBA mod, the current market for GBA IPS mod is insane, this fixes the problem, better screen and more system to run for only 70, a GBA with IPS mod is around 200 right now.
Considering how many of these trash low power systems keep coming out and racing to the bottom for how many systems can "technically" play so long as you don't care about them running great or don't know the difference, it makes sense to target specific niches like this one. I recall a family member trying to get me hyped on one of these that "plays everything up through Dreamcast for $50!". Well Genesis games played horribly with Sonic 3 feeling like a stuttery mess and the culprit was threaded video, which it wouldn't play turned off. Dreamcast "ran" with frameskipping, but who'd want to? Kids maybe? Portable consoles aren't novel anymore, my phone did this better even 15 years ago and I can't enjoy the level of compromise you get at $100 so I got an Odin2 and loving it. But my point is that this and the one that looks like a Saturn controller are the first of these cheap devices that I've genuinely really wanted, and unfortunately the Saturn one is so low powered it won't actually play Saturn well! If these cheap retro handhelds are going to keep selling then at least target some to faithfully cloning one particular system well. I'll definitely use this as a GBA-only system since it appears to do that excellently. I'd love to see a PSP/Vita clone, a solid DS clone, and one like the six button Saturn clone that actually runs Saturn.
I think anbernic should be careful with using nintendo's old designs, they're just asking for a lawsuit; I really like anbernic and want to see them continue making products, so hopefully nothing happens.
This is like the 35xxsp, but so much better! 3x perfect pixel integer, it was made to play gba games perfectly, which the sp was not. And the form factor is ultimately better. Glad I waited for this one.
These idiots released this way too close to Xmas. I bought the XXplus gray for my brother for nostalgia. But i think he would have been more interrested into the GBA looking one as he was a fan of advance wars. Too bad.
Games don't look really good just because of aspect ratio only. I have devices with GBA aspect ratio like retro mini and v10. The retro mini has the worst looking dim screen with poor colours and it's not ips. The v10 doesn't look better than other consoles I have while running GBA.

This will not only be great for GBA games but also amazing for PSP Side-Scrollers and RPG games. 🤩
