    Personally I think box squats can actually be better than half squats for power development with the caveat that you properly sit on the box rather than just bouncing off. The transition from somewhat relaxed (still braced) to exploding has made a big difference to my power

    Speaking of partial reps, might be time to look at Ryan Crouser's training.
    Before putting 23.51m (2 inches/5cm off his WR) at last week's World Championships, in response to a question how Ryan was feeling despite the blood clots in his leg, Ryan's agent just sent a video of Ryan pin-squatting 325kg for an easy double.
    He was, in fact, ready.
    Edit: oh, just had to keep watching!

    Gentlemen, another very interesting video. I have a question. You focused on how half squats are beneficial due to ability to lift more weight and do it faster than with a full depth squat. However, isn't a benefit also in specificity of the movement? I.e. the fact that a half squat produces force in a movement pattern more similar to sprinting (joint angle)? And that it might be beneficial to be your strongest in more than one (full) range of motion?

    The commentary at the 8:45 mark really nails it. This is an advanced movement for a field sport athlete who is already very strong. The idea that’s it’s more plyometric in nature.
    The part at at 11:15 about long term development is excellent as well. This guy is already strong enough for a non ss athlete.

    What's your opinion on partial rep pin squats instead of box squats?
    Seems like it'd be safer and it'd be easier to get the athlete to use decent technique

    • @ianpier16
      @ianpier16 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think pin squats are way more likely to get misgrooved than box squats if you hold the vertical displacement constant

    • @Eipotttatsch
      @Eipotttatsch 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ianpier16 I don't quite understand what you mean by that.
      I just see a ton of people kind of rocking back and forth to gain momentum in their box squats, often losing tightness in the process . That is obviously suboptimal.
      Also failing a rep can be tricky with box squats. You can't bail like you could with normal squats without destroying the bar.

    • @ianpier16
      @ianpier16 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Eipotttatsch I just meant that with the pin contact the bar is likely to drift forward or back but with the butt to box contact the bar is less likely to move forwards or back

    • @ianpier16
      @ianpier16 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Eipotttatschlike having a few degree change in hip angle at box contact isn't likely to result Ina missed lift but the bar can deflect off the safety pins quite easily and the bar moving along the rails can change things a lot

    Pól here. Not belligerent but appreciate you not being as arsey as I was in my comment. I'll just say, there's a strong reason the IRFU are doing a massive strong push for physios the past few months for the Irish squads. No jealousy towards Aki, he's a beast. In my responses I did also explain why power is vital and applicable in rugby. All depends on the purpose and component of fitness being trained. Granted injury plays a factor also. You also mentioned full range squats is beneficial in rugby, which is the point I was making.
