I would recommend to wash the grease and oil out of the area you are going to work on. I rinsed the left side wheel well very well with water and degreaser before tearing into this job.

Porsche911luv thanks for the video! Did you have to transfer that black cap on the pinion from the old rack. My rebuilt rack did not come with one?

NedsterCAR I transferred that cap from the old rack. I don’t know what purpose it serves though. Getting that rack on that spline was one heck of a hard time for me. Hopefully you have better luck .

Porsche911luv I already messed up by not keeping the steering wheel in the center before i removed it. Now i will have to remove the air bag to center that air bag spring, but no big deal 😁

NedsterCAR I’ve replaced the clock spring in my car for a different issue I had. They’re not to bad to replace. They do have a certain way they have to be put on and the tip cars have a different part number from the manual cars. Look at the part number of the one you took off and ref that. Also, you can test they are wound correctly, or change the way it’s wound from the directions on the clock spring housing.

Porsche911luv from what i understand i just have to re-centre the air bag spring not replace the unit (according to the bently manual) but that whole unit is a bit of a mistery to me, but i will figure it out once I remove it. The purpose of that black cap is to keep all the crap from the top of the pinion. Plus there is a metal pin that they use at the factory to centre the racks that breaks as soon as you turn the wheel for the first time.

Out of interest, unless i missed it, is this a Carrera 2 or 4? My C4 needs doing and this looks much easier than dropping the sub-frame.

Hello, great video. Where did you get your replacement rack? Dealer? Just replaced all shocks on my 996, plus inner tie rods and front tires. All new....but a ton of vibration in the steering wheel. Could it be the rack? No leaks from rack when replacing the inner tie rods. Thanks!

Chopper Pump I bought a refurbished rack from rack doctor. It was 300.00. Vibration in steering sounds like alignment issue, wheels bent/not balanced, or flat spots on tires. My rack leaked out of the inner boots. This job wasn’t hard other than reattaching that spline to the steering stock. Does it vibrate at all speeds? Maybe check to see if the two bolts attached to the rack are tight? Also, chk the power steering level.

Thanks. Vibration starts at 110 km/h or 68 mph. Had brand new front tires rebalanced this morning. Will see if this helps tomorrow. Also checked all fasteners in suspension and steering and all were ok. Nothing loose. The 2 bolts holding the rack are a very good idea. Will verify them tomorrow. Thanks again!

also, I would check what torque settings was used for those inner tie rods as that could be a culprit too.

Can you explain what you meant by the spline and knuckle? It wasn’t shown on the video. Thanks

Porsche911luv1 ok, at time stamp 6:47 you can see the rack reattached to the spline on the rack, and the steering column knuckle. You can get a good look at the spline at 4:20 and 5:24 as well(it's in the middle of the wrack at the tallest point of the rack). the spline needs to slip inside that knuckle of the steering column and then you tighten the bolt shown at 6:47. Getting that spline into the knuckle was very very difficult for me. It took me a few hours to slide it back into the knuckle and it only needs to slide on about 1.5". I crawled under the car and threaded my arms through tight spots and then I would use as much force as I could to move that darn rack's spline into that knuckle. the big problem is the knuckle has play in it hydraulically, I think. So, as you push on the wrack the knuckle sinks back towards the car. I think with a lift and more leverage it wouldn't be bad at all, or maybe if you disconnect something from inside the cabin so that knuckle drops more freely. I know the way I did it worked but there must be an easier method.

Hello, I just bought a 2011 997.2 with 8000miles and there is much more than normal vibration coming through the steering wheel. Are there any bushings or mounts that can cause this?? Thanks.

    • @porsche911luv9
      @porsche911luv9  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Giovanny Fernandez well, it could be a component in the suspension but I would bet that’s more of an alignment, bent wheel, or tires that have a flat spot from sitting for so long. If that car only has 8k miles that thing hasn’t been driven much. Congrats on a beautiful car! Let me know what you find cause that’s very interesting

Thanks for your answer, but the issue is more noticeable at idle, it just transmits way too much vibration through the steering column, Im guessing some damaged control arm or rubber bushing gone bad. The car runs perfectly fine, but when I am at a traffic stop, there is just too much vibration transmitted from the engine.@@porsche911luv9

If it's vibrating at idle I would check those two mounting bolts that go to the frame from the power steering rack. Also, I would check down by your footwell for any loose components connected to the steering column. If it's vibing at idle I don't think it's a control arm or a bushing. those things don't move until the car is moving.

I have a 2001 Boxster and recently changed my outer steering links. I notice that when parking the car there is noise coming from the steering, I'm wondering if I need to replace the rack now? What are the symptoms that indicate a need to replace the rack? I haven't noticed any leaks under the car in that area.

Michael Forester is it a groaning noise? Check your hydraulic level and see if it's low. Check for leaks around the rack and inner tie rods.

Porsche911luv Yes, it’s a groaning noise. I’ll check the levels. Thank you!
