Tracking Pucks Properly - Ice Hockey Goalies | Dahan Goaltending (Episode #3)

  • A Vlog with Nick Dahan during his semi-private program in Guelph starring aspiring pro goaltender Sal Stalteri, PWHL Toronto Aeros goalie and two AAA ice hockey goalies. Focusing on chin alignment, tracking pucks in and out and playing through screens. As always we require our goalies to play all rebounds and battle out of a poor save.
    3 key teaching moments:
    - Warm-up your eyes by exaggerating them - see 00:50
    - Keep your blocker off your hip and get your chin to face the puck directly - see 03:27 and 04:43
    - Lean into your saves when sliding, avoid extending and creating holes - see 07:15
    If you have any questions about goalie training or what you can do to improve your game, let me know in the comments.
    We will be posting regularly. Subscribe and join us on a fun and educational journey about on and off-ice goalie development. Thank you for watching.

    Nick Dahan must be one of the best goalie coaches in the industry. I've gotten so much better just from watching his videos, I can't imagine if I was actually attending the camps.

    I really love all those videos. They are short, but so rich of many incredibly sound tips. I'm the father of a young goalie, didn't know anything about ice hockey in general just one and a half year ago. I find your videos incredibly helpful. But the thing I like the most is not the technical stuff, it's the attitude, the energy, the genuine way you encourage and cheers the kids. They must be so pumped. Keep posting!!!

    This is excellent training. When I was a kid in the 90s, I went to the Okanogan Hockey School a couple times. It was ok, but I didn't get nearly this level of instruction. I felt like we were there more for the benefit of the skaters. It was a very different game back then. No one ever taught me how to do a butterfly, for instance. No wonder I didn't make the NHL , lol.
    Now I'm 40ish and I play shinny ball hockey once a week. The other regular goalie is 20, is in great shape, has fancy new gear, and his knees and hips still work. So I'm watching all these videos trying make myself more competitive against that whippersnapper.

      Best of luck! Im 22 myself and I played in a competitive ball hockey league growing up (as a defensemen). However, stopped after I was 18, nowadays I just play road hockey with a bunch of buddies. Since I'm the one of the only few wanting to be goalie, I always watch random videos on youtube to get a better sense of the position. Dahan's videos seem to be the best. My goal is to transition from road hockey goalie to some low level beer league ball hockey goalie. Haha anyway cheers!

      Well in higher competitive hockey that’s how it’s supposed to be, ofc you can make a big save sometime but the D should always have the sticks so they save us time to make another save (if necessary)

    Stumbled upon these vids and glad I did. 44 year old beer league guy....been training with McGill's ex goalie coach. Too bad I missed your camp here in Montreal earlier in the month. After seeing these vids, kicking myself I hadn't done so sooner.
    But man...the biggest improvement to my game has been tracking the my head, hands (having them out is a game changer) and body. I'll hit you up next year for sure. Amazing work...great channel

    Head down on the puck! Head Trajectory (proper head positioning) is a foundational skill for tracking and a must for every goalie! White pucks (aka Mitch Korn- is a great training aid but the goalies as you mentioned need to have their heads down (chin down) as the puck comes into their body). Senaptec quad strobes and xtracker are great tools to develop this skill on an off the ice.

      *Enjoy your youth. I noticed I started losing a lot of my athleticism and reflex speed around my mid 30's. You probably only got a few more years to really play your best hockey. If I could go back and tell myself what to do in my early 30's. I would tell myself to really go hard and use up everything I have left in my tank to play... cause after that, it's chill hockey and a "win" is finishing the game without pulling something.*

    The only problem I have with following the puck is with glove saves. It's happened to me a couple of times where the puck hit my mit and hits my mask and goes in the net. Depends how far the puck is from my body is though. Do you know what I mean?

    Gotta question: Should my u12 work on poke checks? He does decent but obviously when he misses the back door is wide open.

    • @Dahanhockey
      @Dahanhockey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poke checks are fundamental to all goaltenders; they coincide with the ability to play the puck. With their stick, the goalie must learn how to deflect, stop/redirect passes, block a shooting lane, and move/pass the puck.
      Alter the mindset to focus on the benefits and use positive reinforcement to help the athlete understand that failure is part of the learning process. i.e. "You almost had him with your poke check, keep trying, and you'll get better."
      Our objective is to play without doubt or hesitation.

    • @Bateman61405
      @Bateman61405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey I’m assuming you’re talking about power pushes. I’ve struggled with power pushes as well.
      It took me literally hours of ice time just on my knees trying to figure out where my leg/blade needs to be to get a good push.
      For me I really need to get my leg/knee up as high as possible and in front of me so you can load up your weight on the leg to push
      Give that a try and see if you will improve.
      At the goalie clinic I go to I learned speed comes later. It’s all technique.
      It’s all about ice/practice time as well

    Get the goalies to stay on there feet. Look at any goal were the goalie is still standing. STAY OFF YOUR KNEES! just depressing! It's like a bad reflex.

    • @Dahanhockey
      @Dahanhockey  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! I want to share a couple of reasons why we want the goalies to butterfly. See below.
      Focus on the reliability of making stand up saves compared to butterfly. It’s not necessarily a technique to go in the butterfly but a style of play.
      1. When pucks are a foot away from the goalie’s frame, it will be near impossible to reach. When you butterfly, you can consistently extend your arm and legs without performing a balancing act.
      2. When shots go through traffic, there’s a good chance it will get deflected, which will be challenging to react standing up. If the shot is on the ice; then, the goalie should move standing or lateral release to react as it gets tipped.
      3. Rebound control is the ability to make saves with the purpose to get them away from the inside shooting lane and push them to the outside lanes or out of play. Playing stand-up makes it unlikely to have substantial rebound control; shots to the gloves are the only way to control pucks standing up hence why goalies enjoy making blocker/catcher standing when desired.
      4. Shots High Vs Low: Statistically speaking, there are more shots on the lower half of the net compared to the top half. Stand-up saves are inefficient in the lower half of the net.
      Nick Dahan
      Program Director

      @Clever01010 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh ya😄 great! And how's all that worked out so far in todays game?🤪👎 Some things go along way but over time they start to fail and you have to find another way. Goalies today and that move is extremely predictable. Back in the day people had favorite goaltenders because of the way they played there game. Hextall, Feur, Joseph, Roy, and the list goes on and on. Today there all just a goaltender do to all playing the same way and being taught the same way.😒 It's a shame! Now a days nobody has a favorite goalie.

    • @Dahanhockey
      @Dahanhockey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's use SV% as a stat to compare the success of goaltenders in the NHL. We can see an incline from the late 80's & 90's, averaging .890 (the era the goalies you mentioned played in), to the past 15 years averaging .910.
      Within our goalie school, we often hear our students admiring many current or recently former pro athletes. i.e. Shesterkin, Reimer, Vasilevski, Bobrovsky, McElhinney, Binnington, Price and many more.

    • @Clever01010
      @Clever01010 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't compare stand up to butterfly because you don't see it in todays game! The puck bounces off the boards there skates against the post in a butterfly position and its jumping over there pads and in the net, behind the net lacrosse moves and over the sholder goals. The games changing and the goalies need to stand and hug that post, stand so those behind the net lacrosse shots, making a save and not being able to make the second on a rebound because there on there knees! Players are getting better at beating the goalie and the goaltender needs to change as well period!
