    I'm allergic to peppers but I find the science behind capsaicin fascinating. It binds to sodium ion channels to mimic a burning sensation like he said. Menthol does the same on a different receptor but with cold. There's a cactus in Morocco if I remember correctly that has capsaicin as a defense mechanism but it's concentration 16 billion Scovilles, it's called Resiniferatoxin. Scientists are looking into the stuff for chronic pain because it's so much that it essentially just burns your nerve endings away.

      @@mercster I'm not entirely sure tbh. When I eat any my throat feels really scratchy. I had a job at a pizza place when I was younger and green pepper juice got in my glove while making a pizza, I put it in the oven and took off my glove and I had patches of my skin eaten away. I've accidentally eaten paprika and had minimal reaction, so it might just be the oils, when I asked my allergist about a scratch test of any kind I was told they can't test for it. I may only be allergic/sensitive to bell peppers, but if someone cooks spicy food in the house my eyes burn so idk. I'm not taking any risks lol

I remember watching this and thinking how cool it would be to get a pepper 'high' and today I finally did! I bought this 'Naga Knockout' sauce which was mostly naga ghost peppers and ate a bunch with a panini. Initially it almost tasted like eating something really sweet and fruity, then the next 2 minutes, every hole in my body was running like a faucet and then for the next half hour I was walking around the city high off my head. Nicest feeling I've had in a long time actually. Thank you for your wisdom.

    Have you noticed how hot peppers (Capsacin) make your mouth more sensitive to something that is actually hot.
    If you eat something warm it feels much hotter.Or mint makes your mouth more sensitive to COLD. Drink room temperature water, and it seems colder.

    I've eaten scorions, reapers, and my favorite 7 pot primo for years.
    Water, soda, and milk make it much worse. Sometimes, significantly.
    I did find that ice cream (1 cup) is great in moderation and actually did help me.
    Mango juice, along with lime and lemon juice, are great for getting rid of the burn. I make a mouthwash out of lemon and lime juice mix.
    Rubbing alcohol has been great of getting the oils off the skin. Do not swallow rubbing alcohol or get it in your eyes.

    If you want to curve the heat just by a little bit drink milk before you eat anything hot it actually puts a layer of coating over your mouth and your throat and stomach it's not foolproof but it does help a little bit

  • @Witmonger

    First off, I know of Ed and love his contributions to pepperdom. But the first half of his first answer is absolutely wrong. Sure, don't "chug" milk or other dairy products, but dairy DOES have casein in it which binds to and breaks down capsaicin. This is scientifically proven. And it's been proven in my mouth about a thousand times.
    Milk will absolutely help get rid of the burn. Sip on some 1%, swish it around a bit, half a glass is plenty. It WILL help immensely. Been eating the hottest of the hot for twenty years.

    • @Deathranger999
      @Deathranger999 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t know that that’s actually been proven. I found an article suggesting it to be true, but the one link supporting that was broken or to a now-defunct website. I’d like to see some research on it, but the only actual research I can find is just experimental data suggesting that milk of any kind is equally effective, and that that may be due to caseins.

    To get the heat off my hands I put some olive oil on my hands, let it soak in a couple seconds, then dry off with a paper towel. Then rinse the hands in warm water and soap for about a minute. Works well.
