This 1953 Volkswagen Beetle Is Simply Air-Cooled Art

- “It will break down some days. I don’t want to worry about that,” says Manuel Campa.
You’re looking at a 1953 Volkswagen Beetle, a mass-produced marvel that is now quite the rare car, and it’s used by Campa as a daily driver. “I want to pick up my wife with it, I want to drive in the weekends with it, and have fun and enjoy. It’s a car to have fun with,” he says.
"It might be silly for some people," says Campa, “but it’s a dream come true for me and I’m super happy with the car.”
A dream come true? Campa is a painter by trade, who honors classic cars, motorcycles, and bicycles on canvas. “For me, my passions are my cars, my toys, my brushes, my canvas, my studio,” he says, “and that’s where I spend most of my days.”
“The thing that not many people see is that you have to work very hard in your studio to make this happen…your painting is going to hang in someone’s house,” Campa says. After a long, difficult process, he says of his creations: “Finally, sometimes it’s worth having your signature.”

Steering wheel is mounted upside down on his Beetle. That would drive me frickin nuts, its an OCD thing, my eyes drew to it instantly. I love the older Beetles. Had a bunch through our used car dealership as a kid. I love the white interior parts, the shelf, roof rack, etc. My dad worked at a VW Dealership in the 60-70's.
Very good artist though! I'd love to have a painting in my living room like one of those!
mytmousemalibu my dream car is a beetle, they are cheap and easy to work on, parts arent overly expensive and i dont care about fast cars cause its a fun car, fun cars dosnt need to be fast

Had a 1968 some years ago and it never let me down
I literally just closed my eyes to go to sleep when I got the notification, then I saw it was a VW and of course I had to watch it!

They are fun cars to drive and for me I love the way they look.
I remember driving my uncle's 1958 Beetle. It was the early 70's in downtown Mobile, Alabama. It was July with humidity and temp in the 90's.
It drove pretty well considering the age and mileage on this original Bug. I would have bought that car from him, although he lived 750 miles from our house.
The two things I remember him saying that day, "If a car is well designed it doesn't need power steering" and "If the engine is in the rear you really don't need air conditioning".
Now, many years later I agree with him on the steering. Without power steering you get better feedback about what the front wheels are doing. Now the installation of an electric motor to assist gives the best of both worlds. Hydraulic power steering to me feels like I am driving on ice.
Now having the engine in the rear is not the norm. And air cooling is not acceptable with emissions as tolerances have to be wider to allow for expansion during warm up.
But having the engine behind you allows all that heat to follow you, rather than driving through it.
I enjoyed driving that old Beetle. It made great sounds that can only be appreciated by the ears of true gearhead car nut. No it wasn't fast, but it made these sounds that made you feel good 👍. It really was a delightful experience that I remember over forty years later. I won't go into the smells it generated, too.
