THE QUEEN OF IRELAND
PANDORA ‘PANTI’ BLISS is many things: part glamorous aunt, part Jessica Rabbit, she's a wittily incisive performer with charisma to burn who is regarded as one of the best drag queens in the world.
Created by Rory O’Neill, Panti is also an accidental activist and in her own words ‘a court jester, whose role is to say the un- sayable’. Over the last few years Rory has become a figurehead for LGBT rights in Ireland and since the recent scandal around Pantigate, his fight for equality and against homophobia has become recognised across the world.
THE QUEEN OF IRELAND is a documentary film that follows Rory’s journey from the small Mayo town of Ballinrobe to striding the world stage. The film takes us behind the scenes with his alter ego Panti in the year she became the symbol of Ireland’s march towards marriage equality. Directed by Conor Horgan (One Hundred Mornings, Deep End Dance) and produced by Blinder Films (Citadel, One HundredMornings) the film builds build up a multi-faceted picture of a complex and compelling character through behind the scenes footage and interviews with friends, peers and protégés, including Bunny, Tonie Walsh, Shirley Temple Bar, Una Mullally, David Norris, the O’Neill family, the other half of CANDI PANTI, Angelo Pitillo, long time collaborators Niall Sweeney and Philip McMahon.
THE QUEEN OF IRELAND opens in cinemas nationwide on Wednesday October 21st
Wish they'd put this on Hulu, Netflix or something so people in the US have a better opportunity to see this.
I saw this the other night and there was Q&A afterwards. Rory was inspiring and really awesome. I spoke to him afterwards. He's a really kind and caring person. Ireland is all the richer for having Rory and Panti.

Just arrived from France to live here in Cork, Ireland. I've been so touched by the powerful of Panti Bliss. I am gay and I felt like that at some points in my life 'oppressive' and I still feel this feeling sometimes. Being gay is a lonely battle, we must constantly fight, protect ourselves and do not offend straight people as some straight people offend us !I could say a million things about homophobia but I'm just going to say a million thanks to Panti Bliss

Rory and Panti are great, but this looks quite dull. Hopefully the film is better than this trailer.

Well that's you and I've met Rory in both guises and he's an incredible person. It absolutely has revolutionised being gay in Ireland. I also notice you've restricted me for no reason at all on here and you probably won't see this but anyhow you're an ignorant person who has no idea what you're talking about.
+Rick Perry She has been at the forefront of a brilliantly successful campaign to legalise same sex marriage equality, gave one of the most powerful, life-affirming speeches I've ever witnessed and is a hugely beloved and respected figure internationally. If that's not laudable I don't know what is, I think there may be something of the little green-eyed monster tearing it's head here.
