Lol okay mate… watch Satriani play and come back to me. You can see Brian May talking about Nuno from the band Extreme saying he has ability that he can never reach. So then it comes down to personal preference. Punk music is just that… punk, stupid, foolish. The composition of Mozart is far beyond this you will never be able to comprehend my friend. But for music with guitar his ability is very limited. But it’s whether you like punk music which if you do then the joke is on you 😂
@@DanFernandesBenficaSaint the Strangler's were not even a Punk group........ i grew up in London in the late 1970s and was part of that whole music scene back then and even back then everybody knew this band were way too musical and talented to be labeled Punk....... similar to the Police they were smart and played into the marketing of "angry young bands of the time, but had way more musical chops than their contemporaries of that era.
+secallen uh, if you're not being ironic, I'd be happy to explain everything wrong with this video. If you're just being cheeky, sorry, no offense intended. :D
Incredible performance, these boys put their hearts and soul into it. Hugh's innovative drumsticks keyboards playing is breathtaking. Such lovely down to earth boys.
I love it when they play keys with drumsticks. Hugh, wanting to expand his musical boundaries, probably got a lesson from Dave G in the dressing room before. Dave, meanwhile, was only too happy to step into the frontman shoes and deliver this passionate vocal performance. I hope you all took f-in notes, cos they weren't talkin bollocks. There will be a test.
Jet Black has really the bottle to play an amazing guitar solo at the end of the song. The tightness of JJ's drumming is vraiment formidable, great fun, cheers!
JJ on drums... Hugh behind keys... a Hohner Clavinet of all things... Dave looks like he's actually playing, and then Jet using a beer bottle as a violin bow at the end... too funny.
Have to say that these lads are good. Timing, power and precion is not easy live but these lads pulled it of with panache. No lip synching here. Just talent.
This is bloody comical!! Absolutely hilarious! I too noticed that Dave was "playing" the right notes, but as he was originally a guitarist (he still plays acoustic on "Sanfte Kuss") he's bound to know his way around a bass neck to some degree.
@@geoffpoole483 Nirvana would do something similar almost 20 years later. They were pissed that they were forced to mime a song so they intentionally fucked it up.

Aaah, the stranglers. Webels to the end. This is a fine example of some bands' ridicule of miming their own songs on TV. And it's the funniest I've ever seen, with Iggy Pop's performances on Countdown spectacular. I laugh out loud at getting their in-jokes - playing each other's instruments, singing the other guy's part. Totally wrecking the whole lip sync atmosphere. What a stunning live performance. JJB keppin' it real with an honest, tight drum groove, Folks won't know but guitarist maestro JB taught JB every guitar technique he needed to record Blow by Blow, HC - king of the keys, and DG...what can I say! THIS is why Real is Best! Heroes, every one of them!
Was a big stranglers fan right up to the point many years ago now that i woke up one morning and saw them playing "always the sun " on kids TV show "number 73" :-( never the same after that .....RIP Dave.
Hahaha watched both versions of this TopPop performance, love this pisstaking on this one with the members having fun swapping instruments and vocals over, something a band can do on any music TV program that is all miming and backing track, I wonder how this would of all sounded if it were 100 percent live?
Awesome! I was only familiar with the other version but this one kicks ass as well! Am curious as hell how the original sound in that room sounded like, probably a lot of nonsense hahaha. Rest in peace Dave
THE Stranglers were a bit older than most of the other punk/rock bands of 1977, making their music a bit more solid & musical than a lot of other punk bands. Result... some really Great Music. RB/nowretiredfromTheScene&waitingfor1978
Jet Black - one of the world’s underrated guitarists.

RIP Jet. An inspiration to guitarists everywhere (apart from Brazil, apparently)

THAT'S the way to handle play-back. Punk spirit.
Excellent audio for a live performance. They were a really tight group by then.

This is fantastic. Kinda wish more and other bands had the audacity to play the musical-star game for what it is.
Incredible performance, these boys put their hearts and soul into it.
Hugh's innovative drumsticks keyboards playing is breathtaking.

Ooooh, I'd introduce them to my mother

🥲🥲🥲
Dave looks very comfortable with a Bass Guitar probably could play it.
Gawd bless the Stranglers! I love how JJ only has two bits of drum kit left by the end!
I'd kill for the original audio xD
Rip Dave Greenfield we'll never forget him
Producer: "Play back this time, lads".
The Stranglers : "Hold My Beer".
Jet Black with an interesting guitar technique!
That's exactly how one of Crass used to play.
Infinite Barre Chords.
First time Ive seen that anywhere
Upside down power chords, it's an idea 🤔
The proper way
Jet Black has really the bottle to play an amazing guitar solo at the end of the song. The tightness of JJ's drumming is vraiment formidable, great fun, cheers!
you can't beat a good live performance..
I had never heard about this band till now, but watching this and it seems they were so badass unlimited.
The Stranglers started in 1974. Their debut album was released in 1977.
They once tied a French journalist to the Eifel tower, naked. Because he wrote a bad article about the Stranglers. Bad asses, nah...
Dear Mr.Dave.
His keyboard sound was an integral part of "stranglers sound".
We pray for his souls.
JJ on drums... Hugh behind keys... a Hohner Clavinet of all things... Dave looks like he's actually playing, and then Jet using a beer bottle as a violin bow at the end... too funny.
This is fantastic! JJ looks like he's having too much fun and considering a musical career move.
i wonder what jet thought at the end

lol I’m just watching this and laughing but just realizing that Dave was actually playing the correct bass lines!!!!! 👍🏻
yeah, that's Dave. And singing the right lyrics. And enjoying it. What a lark!
This is what playback performances always should have been, and should be. Pioneers in everything they did.
GENIUS!!!
Awwww bless. Dave's even playing the right bass notes.

Yep
I have this theory that this performance might've been lip synced
+Robbie Mayer Theory? Fact.
good job, buddy.
you must be fun at parties
Robbie... Not theory but certainty..
No way man! Prove it!!
Every band that mimes should do it this way & show what a farce tv is
Credit to the Stranglers for doing this.

Iron Maiden did the very same on German TV, I think, in the early-mid 80s
Just the best ever.
I bet the producers were thinking "No more TopPop any more!"
It wasn't their last though.
Later Iggy Pop was on Toppop, he was fighting with a palmtree...lol
What great memorable sounds of Dave Greenfield on the keyboard...RIP
Greatest band in the history of popular music
RIP Dave Greenfield...a genius on bass as well.
Best group ever to play live at the Bol d'or in the early 80s. I'll never forget it, cheers lads.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 best play bag ever
Some interesting chords by Dave
Dave does a great job on vocals

I thought the drum player was excellent, a maestro.

This is just so funny what a great band
They truly know how to play to a backing track!
It's perfect miming,brilliant
JJ on the drums, smashed it 🤣😂
That drummer played note for note.
Brilliant TV moment!

All Jet is doing is worrying about the young whipper snapper smashing up his prized drum kit
JJ is fucking destroying Mr Duffys kit, excellent!
i might be being a little unfair but I think they might have been miming.... key song of my youth... love it.
Wow these guys were great live ! 😊
JJ on the drums....awesome!
i didn't realize what accomplished musicians they were on each others instruments lol priceless footage
It's good to see them having fun.
Love how this band appear to have been so instrumentally interchangeable.
Never forgotten this episode of Top Pop.
brilliant
What a great band
This vid is BRILLIANT!!!!! the Stranglers at there best.......taking the piss... luv it
So much talent they were all totally at home with the other's instruments.
Love it.
Genios!!!
What a fantastic turnaround best ever band
Dave Burnel: bass and vocals, Jet Cornwell: guitar, Hugh Greenfield: keyboards and Jean Jacques Black: drums
correction
Dave Burnel: bass and vocals, Jet Cornwell: guitar and bottle, Hugh Greenfield: keyboards and Jean Jacques Black: VIOLENCE!!!
That's about right.
Best playback ever! The TV producers sure got mad at them for this stunt 3:)
Mad? This is in the Netherlands not in the BBC dungeons!
Thanks for posting!
great to see Jet out front - my guitar hero !!!
Brilliant when i 1st saw this , i thought i'd lost my mind :)
That standing jump over the toms,..bloody fit guy!)
Talented multi-instrumentalist's one and all. We will never see the like again

The noise must have been terrible. I can imagine the guitars and keys weren't connected to anything, but the drums must have made quite a noise. 😂
Amusant autant qu'excellent, bref les illustrissimes et magnifiques Stranglers en fête!!!! TOP!

seems Dave actually knows the bass part- his fretting hand is spot on!
That was hilarious!
absolutely fantastic, funniest thing i've seen in ages (i don't get let out much hahaha)
Absolute masterpiece
The best, concrete implementation of the song at forced playback
"Ok guys, can u make a little playback?"....
"Yup. No problem"
Fantastic!
