Forgive me for my tardiness, but I have a question, perhaps a silly one, but you started off by soaking the bag to constrict the canvas, I understand that. My question is, would it be better to turn the bag inside out for the initial soak, to try and keep extra debris/crap off the exterior and then falling into your water container that you’re filling with “filtered” water?

Speaking of pillows, my grandparents used the fabric from feather pillows as pre filters for decades, apparently it's been done as long as the fabric (ducking) has been around.

Mil bags are really useful kit. Even filled it with snow and set it up next to the wood stove to fill my coffee kettle.

That s not a fill line , you fill it with as much water as it will take and start to collect water when the water level reaches that line, as per instructions on the original British army issue mill banks bags.

I think they assume soldiers need direction it is not difficult to see when the water is running clear. And not filling the bag to the top makes less mess when moving to a stationary point honestly

@@DavidCanterbury point taken, but that was the thinking behind the line on the bag, anyway your videos are always worth a view, all the best

Excellent- I didn’t know about canvas constricting - a great piece of kit - compact - multi purpose

I have always used wadded up clothes for a pillow when out in the woods until this past year, and boy let me tell you my pillow is probably my favorite part of my sleep system

Thabks for sharing Dave. We do this a little differently over here, usually using shemaghs or our German BW Dreieckstuch (kind of like a bandana)

Another great video! Dave, I am in the Midwest with lots of agricultural/farming runoff into our lakes & streams. Do you have a process for making water drinkable by removing the chemicals/pesticides they use in the fields? Thanks for all the great content!

Will any canvas money bag work? I assume it must have to be tight weave, and thick. A google search revealed the complete name: Millbank Filter Bag. A possible reason for the line on the bag is a limit on the water pressure. If the water is above that line the water pressure might compromise the bag's filtering ability.

Question : what kind of food can you get from a stream this size?

Hi David, What if you were in a survival situation where you only had small streams, like the one in this video?

Still fairly in doubt about the actual value of this bag, as it's basically a pre-filter, but i guess if you know you will run into gunk water the value goes up quite a bit. But seeing how many actual filters (soyer f/e) are around, and sure if the water is gunk a good pre-filter helps to keep the soyer clean of gunk... so, probably a nice bit of kit to have, but in my case it would likely not be much more than a tinder pouch ... one note though, pre-filters are great to have your actual filter lasting longer! just not to sure if this high grade one is for me...

Great vid again, I have used this system as a first stage for longer than I care to remember, I have to say your students don't look very interested, maybe the millbank is to old school for them haha

I use one exactly as Dave said.
I also use a mesh insert inside it when not filtering with it on longer trips so I can use it as a sprouting bag to grow alfalfa, mung bean sprouts etc. It keeps damp so provides a perfect sprouting bag, when I want to filter, I just take the mesh bag with the sprouts out of it, filter then put it back.
As Mr Canterbury said, multi use

I added jungle knots to the cordage that the bag hangs from as an extra aid to securing the Millbank bag to a tree/bush.

If you're just pouring the muddy water into the bag anyways, why not just scoop the water with the bag? Great idea you can never have enough bags or containers

Yeah, boots make shitty pillows. I’d rather a bag of dirt wrapped in a towel
