Hello! In this video, I demonstrate how to say the usual daily greetings like a local with a special emphasis on how to pronounce the letter 'E' and the letter 'T' like proper Malay people do :D
    Just a quick recap:
    Selamat Pagi - Good Morning
Selamat Tengah Hari - Good Afternoon
    Selamat Petang - Good Evening
    Selamat Malam - Good Night
And I forgot to mention, Selamat means Safe. So in Malay, you're literally wishing people safe mornings, safe noons, safe evenings and safe nights :D
Some credentials, I am Malay and I was born, raised and still live in Malaysia.
As usual, if you have any comments or any ideas how to make my videos better for you, please feel free to comment! I'm all for improvements!

I am ashamed. Being British and married for 40 years to a Chinese Malaysian I have never bothered to learn the Bahasa Malaysian language. Now retired and wishing to spend 3 months a year in Malaysia I think it is now time to learn before I embarrass myself further. Thank you for your videos. You make learning fun and easy to understand. Good luck with your channel.

Shocked! I learnt a bit from an ex-boyfriend. When he got bored of teaching me, I had to resort to getting him to translate "sexy" phrases to learn stuff like "big" (use your imagination!), "it's great, do it again" and so forth. 30 years on and I'm about to go to Malaysia for the first time and slightly worried I'll say the wrong thing so hence I'm here!

Selamat hari! I stared studying some bahasa Indonesia, and than I met a friend from Malasia and tried to learn some things in Malay and realized there are so many things similar to Indonesian.
Malay is really like my Portuguese and Spanish, lots of words are pretty similar, but with diferent pronunciation. That is nice!
    Terima Kasih, Lisa!

Hi. Concerning the 'T' pronunciation, there is actually a linguistic term for it. T in Malaysian is unaspirated T. And the T with the emphasis (like in English) is called an aspirated T. 🙂

I am watching this video from my "asrama" dormitory. I am studying at a Malaysian university (Taylors), which is in Subang Jaya, a city very near to KL. I can speak malay a little, because I have local friends, but all verbs and phrases I know are just from them. Its not systematic knowledge. Terima kasih banyak kerana anda kerja ahahha. This phrase I know.

Thank you Lisa, what you are doing is great. I don't speak the Malay language, I learnt it as a third language when I was in primary school, which is primary 1 to 3 only. After that it was scraped. So I new certain short word, but didn't learn how to construct a full sentence. Now I find it an urgency to learn it to communicate with colleagues and the Malay community. Would be good if you can teach number counting like 1 to 100, Mon to Sun, how to say Public Holiday. Thank you so much. Regards,
