It's great that Mexico is building some train infrastructure. Most countries in Latin America just copy the US-American Car-Only-Ideology and then wonder why transportation is a mess...
The US has the best rail infrastructure and general transportation infrastructure in the world. There’s a reason the US economy is so efficient and US GDP Per Capita is much higher than Europe. Europe has decent rail infrastructure but terrible road infrastructure

How is this sustainable when the communities werent involved in the project, the ecosystem has been destroyed and corruption keeps appearing here and there. I love trains dont get me wrong, but this isnt the project needed for the country. Locals cant even afford to be on the train and stations are far from city centres. Dont be fooled by it being a train.
I'm from the north of México and I dream to have something like this in this part of the country, there are certain distances thar too short to be covered by plane, and take quite a bit of time by bus. Many people were not so happy about the construction of this train, but I think is really amazing that México starts to build a proper railway network, specially now that roads can get pretty dangerous.
Great trip. It's great to see another brand new rail line in America Continent. When i searched about the ownership of this train, it's owned by Mexican Armed Forces which is surprising me. I think this feels like Westbahn or maybe Soko Train in Serbia or maybe another long distance train using regional train set, but hey at least the seat is comfortable and have complimentary food/snack. And lastly they have special fare for someone who lives around the line.
@@NonstopEurotrip I just checked the prices for Mérida Teya-Palenque and it was $2,300 for International Premier, a National non-Local would pay $1,111. This is a bit cheaper than the prices in the video!

First, I want to thank you for sharing all of this information. It is really nice to hear a honest opinion that is not influenced by a political party. Mexico has done a lot, but I know there is still so much to get done. Even though many people dont want to see it, Mexico is moving in a the right direction. By the way, another thing you didnt mention and that is really important to me, is the safety while traveling. With that, I could sleep like a baby without any worries.
Great video, shows everything you need to know when you want to ride this train 👍🏻 I do hope they will add WiFi to the trains, as it would suck for not having a WiFi in a 7h+ journey
If I wanted to have my eyeballs glued to a little screen while the scenery goes by I'd stay home and I'd be doing my part for "Net Zero" (which, personally I give a hoot about but you should).
That was a very nice review. I was there in Mérida at the beginning of the year and I travelled 2500 kilometers on the train Maya. There was a lot ro be done but i rally loved to see this great infrastructure plan working in the south of México. I can only imagine how amazing it'll be ro do the complete journey. As today, September 20, the sleeper train will be tested this weekend!! I'll be traveling on train through UK in November to check out the European train service in UK and France. I've already tried out the italian and Spanish train service, which are excellent! Greetings from Mexico mate.
Having grown up in Europe and lived for a few years on and off in Mexico, I would like to see Mexico expand rail service with a North South train from Texas (maybe Laredo), down south at least to Oaxaca. With a spur to Mexico City. Yes, it would cost a lot of money, but if done over a period of a couple of decades it would provide a tremendous economic boost.
What foreigners need to understand is that, in no other term of office had the government in turn made this sort of investment in the southern part of the country (yes, this project was fully funded by public investment and is currently administered by the Army), just as the current administration has. Historically, most high-level investments were made in the central and northern parts of the country, therefore, poverty levels were higher in the southern states. That being said, this is quite a huge improvement for the zone, not only on transportation and mobility terms, but for the whole infrastructure (current and future) around this project. Yes, there's still plenty of room for improvement in all areas and feedback is not only welcome, but crucial, however, the same should have the forementioned context in consideration; we're finally getting there and are still working on it. Thank you for sharing your personal experience and thoughts on this, Sir!
Since the train opened just this year, chances are they are still trying to figure out how they will run the line in the future, can't wait to see what it will be like in 3 to 5 years
Thanks for sharing. I rode El Chepe from Chihuahua to Los Mochis and back through the spectacular Copper Canyon in 2017. The train looks much improved since that time and even inlcudes a former UP dome car.
Everyone lined up along the platform edge to take clips of the train when I took it from cancun to merida. Most people have probably never used a train before.
Mexico used to have like 9 lines before going to the private sector (they kill them and use it as freight ). Only the very old people remember took this trains, I'm happy the president is trying to take them back but I wish they were more than 170km/h 😭
People are just happy to see a new project that is already benefiting many of the communities along the route, most of them forgotten by other presidents before AMLO.
@@aliciarodgers3406 plz no AMLO propaganda here, they skipped the environmental impact study with a stupid "military project" degree. No sane country would give operation of a passenger railway to the army.

I'm excited by the fact this is a first offering, in a country that has relatively little recent experience with passenger rail (in a continent that as a whole is very far behind as in this regard, when compared Europe and Asia). Hopefully in this state it remains viable enough to not only keep operating, but to maintain interest in improving it, as was was mentioned or alluded in the video, with faster trains, better interiors, WiFi, better value, or maybe even big infrastructure projects to create stations closer to the city centers (or better connect them). It's a young system so the next years will be important, but as with any new "skill". Hopefully the government of Mexico didn't bite more than it can chew, reviving passenger rail in Mexico with such a big (and quickly built) project.
Nonstop Eurotrip: You should try "El Chepe" a train route from Chihuahua City to Los Mochis (North of Mexico), is the only passenger train that survive Mexican Neoliberalism. It is also an astonishing route, with magnificent views, and a strong indigenous culture.
We apologize for the inconveniences, at the moment, the prices are set as expressed due to interstations not being available yet, thus there's is a full price charge to the immediate next open station, you are not able to see the prices that will apply to shorter distances yet,, most people who are doing the trip as nationals do understand this factor and are only using it as is because it suits their needs exactly,, the price is supposed to go down with the distance each person travels as soon as those other stations open, as some sort of compensating it was decided to not establish a differentiated rate for nationals and foreign travelers, that will change as soon as all the stations are ready, these are not hard or slow to build, what was hard is already done, also I'm not sure it's been solved but the ticket sales system wasn't ready to be in business, thus a third party seller is being used and it has a very stiff set up in order to make it affordable, meaning they only sell the national rate to all and no differentiation between handicap, elderly, student, etc discounts, thus it seems dumb at the moment but it's all on track to become a very well used piece of infrastructure, ,as mentioned, what was hard is already done and this hiccups will be ironed out soon, we thank you for your patience
A comparable bus ride costs about 1,050 from palenque to merida, and It takes about 8 hours. The train is a bit more expensive, but the view is probably better.
Thanks for visiting my country! 🎉 And making such a beautiful report about the Mayan Train, that, for many Mexicans like me is very expensive, and even more if you are from Mexico City like me, is more expensive because travelling from Mexico to Yucatan is dramatically expensive. Also, this train is polemic in the opinion of many Mexicans, so it's good to have non-negative and non political-plagued opinions about it (aka. "It's going to be falling down in the next 10 years"). I am one of those people like you that doesn't like those negative opinions about transportation in Mexico. Mexico is Mexico and it has its own problems, so it is better to be thankful instead of having the fear of "the Mayan Train is falling down" Greetings from Xochimilco, México by a Nutbrown otaku train enthusiast and a fan of Natsuki Deguchi ❤
My dream is to travel on the whole route! I think the price is tend to low when the demand is higher. Is the first train in many decades, it's new for México at certain point that's what they need to learn many things about it! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great feedback, I agree prices are expensive but I believe are still ok in comparison to flying limited points. The train gives you access to many Maya spots.
The last time I traveled by train in that part of Mexico was in 1997, from Campeche to Orizaba. I liked your review and also agree is expensive, but I will pay without a problem since I love trains and travel in those areas in bus is much more grueling and tedious.
I don’t think the price is that bad. It is indeed a first class product, and for 7 hours I think the price is perfectly fine. You‘d pay the same for a DB journey on 7 hours (if you don’t book months in advance), and you don’t get a free meal and complimentary snacks and drinks with that. And you still have the Standard class, which is reasonably priced as well in my opinion.
Its may be average for german standarts but its certainly too high for a mexican. Like you would pay around 25 € for a 7 hour trip in business class in turkey, a country similar to mexico in terms of gdp per capita.
@@NonstopEurotrip as a Mexican I can tell you that we nationals get to pay a lower price for the Tren Maya services. It's on the official website, you can check it. You just gotta show an official ID to the staff in order to get them. And the discounts are even lower for people from the 5 states where the train runs: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán y Quintana Roo. Perfectamente lógico, ¿no te parece?
I live next to the railway and I’ve travelled 2 times from Escárcega to Cancun and it’s a 8 hr trip and it cost me for being local traveler 1200 pesos about 60 dollars which I find very reasonable price and Its comfortable to travel very worth it.
@@NonstopEurotrip about the same price , but I find the train more comfortable and safe. I’ve travelled on bus to Cancun and it’s about 11 hr trip and sometime more depending on the road conditions. Overall I find the train way better to travel.
Ok, so how did you get to Palenque? They should add a passenger rail connection between Mexico City & Palenque. Before the Mexican President discontinued most of their passenger trains in 1997, they operated using 1930's era former U.S. Pullman cars. In 1983, I rode from Merida to Mexico City on a combination passenger & freight train, which included a live cattle car in the consist. Then continued via train to Guadalajara, Los Mochis, Chihuahua, Juarez. Then walked over the U.S. border to El Paso, then further train travel via bus & Amtrak.
Yeah, Mexico City to Palenque is more than 900KM, so it's a big task that will happen gradually in the following years. In the next months there will be another train line from Coatzacoalcos to Panlenque, so that covers 300 KM already... next would be Mexico City to Coatzacoalcos. However, there are other rail projects that might have higher priority, like Mexico City to Guadalajara, and Mexico City to Monterrey.
@@NonstopEurotripthey are planning to make it from Coatzacoalcos to Veracruz and then to México city. In fact with our next new first female president is planning to make about 3,000 kms of train tracks for passengers because with tren maya, it gave a lot of jobs and improved a lot too the local economy!! 😅
Soon it will be possible to travel on the HST intercity 125 from Palenque station with lines Z and FA from the neighboring states of Veracruz, Tabasco and Oaxaca
Thank you for giving this review. As a US rail fan I've been following the Tren Maya railroad development. It doesn't appear to be going 142 kph very often. It is almost seems slow, but it is passing traffic on the adjacent highway. I was very glad the views out of the train are greatly cleared. I thought it might be right up against jungle growth where it's hard to see much at all.
i am glad you like it. i found it to be expensive, slow, consistently late, infrequent trips and with terrible station locations in popular cities and airports
As a Mexican, I can tell you that this project is a highly controversial political topic. That’s why I appreciate reading and watching unbiased opinions like yours. Thank you for that
Doesn’t seem like you can book a ticket too far in advance. It’s sept 22nd and I attempted to book for Oct 5th and it said no tickets available. It’s like you can only book maybe a week in advance?? What good is that if you’re planning a trip to several locations with hotel reservations??

It's great that Mexico is building some train infrastructure. Most countries in Latin America just copy the US-American Car-Only-Ideology and then wonder why transportation is a mess...
In the USA cars and airplanes are both very frustrating. I used to work for AMTRAK not punctual delays but the USA's freight trains are massive!!
The US has the best rail infrastructure and general transportation infrastructure in the world. There’s a reason the US economy is so efficient and US GDP Per Capita is much higher than Europe.

I do hope they will add WiFi to the trains, as it would suck for not having a WiFi in a 7h+ journey

That was a very nice review. I was there in Mérida at the beginning of the year and I travelled 2500 kilometers on the train Maya. I'll be traveling on train through UK in November to check out the European train service in UK and France. I've already tried out the italian and Spanish train service, which are excellent! Greetings from Mexico mate.
Thanks for sharing! That's sounds like a great trip 😊
Will be done at least that's what has been announced
Completely agree!!
It's in the plan,!! 😁👍

I hope so too! 😁

Train travel is great, I'm glad Mexico invested in this project and I will happily travel on that line when it's completed. Thank you for the video.
Tren Maya is an amazing project, beautiful scenery!! Highly recommended!!
A comparable bus ride costs about 1,050 from palenque to merida, and It takes about 8 hours. The train is a bit more expensive, but the view is probably better.

And making such a beautiful report about the Mayan Train, that, for many Mexicans like me is very expensive, and even more if you are from Mexico City like me, is more expensive because travelling from Mexico to Yucatan is dramatically expensive.
Also, this train is polemic in the opinion of many Mexicans, so it's good to have non-negative and non political-plagued opinions about it (aka. "It's going to be falling down in the next 10 years"). I am one of those people like you that doesn't like those negative opinions about transportation in Mexico.
What about for a local though 👀
Its may be average for german standarts but its certainly too high for a mexican. Like you would pay around 25 € for a 7 hour trip in business class in turkey, a country similar to mexico in terms of gdp per capita.
@@NonstopEurotrip as a Mexican I can tell you that we nationals get to pay a lower price for the Tren Maya services. It's on the official website, you can check it.
Perfectamente lógico, ¿no te parece?

Nice to see Mexico catching up. Only problem is that the stations are far out of the centres. So you still need a bus or a cab to get to the station
Yeah. But they couldn't knock down the towns...
I flew to Villahermosa and took the ADO airport shuttle bus. I agree that it does need better connections but this is the start! 😃
