hey Jim great job on the videos even though I am totally blind I get a lot out of your video since I already play guitar keep up the great work God bless
I've played guitar for . . . gee, 45 years, I guess . . . and I have my first banjo on order, so I'm looking around for some first steps. I appreciate your clarity and simplicity; I can't wait to get started!
Yes Jim very helpful. So many movable chord options including just using you index finger as a barr each fret but I like options. Some chords sound better using one shape and a different chord better using another shape. Speed of course is the challenge. Takes time to switch out of one chord to another in rhythm. One reason why using the same shape up and down the neck is your friend.
So basically what I asked was that how did you know that Earl Scruggs, Sonny Osborne, Jd Crowe ect... How did you know that they did not learn by tab? I think it is easier to learn without tab 90% of the time, but I was just wondering how you knew.
Do your own research sometime, the answers are out there. For most of the early musicians, the music was something passed on through person to person just by playing and learning with each other. When people had new ideas they created it themselves. Listen and learn and try not to read too much ;)
@@Isaiah_46_4-5 If they learned from tabs, where are the tabs? What books? Those documents would be available if they existed. Furthermore, all of those players have stated at different times that they did not use tabs to learn. ...and banjo tabs just simply didn't exist until after Scruggs was already famous.
Hi Jim, thanks for the video. On a separate note (no pun intended...) regarding your J D Crowe thumb pick, I believe that is the shorter Bluechip version, and could you let me know how much shorter that version is from the usual length of thumb picks please ? Cheers, Steve.
Thanks for another great one, Jim. For me, the F-minor shape will take some growing into, but thanks to your encouragement, I know I'll get it. Just had a reckoning moment with learning your Sailor song- spent ½ hour or better trying to make A#(Bb) sound like a D- kept listening and looking at your fingers and scratching my head until it hit me my brain was trying the D shape from down the neck when it should have been the down the neck F shape- making the D chord at this spot- duh! Thought I'll never do that again... until I got to the B part of the song. But I caught that one in just a minute or two! No matter how old you get- math still bites you every now and then!
I’m tearing my hair out trying to play the F shape with out muting the 3rd trying with my ring finger or muting the second string by not pressing down hard enough with my index finger. It feels like my fingers are simultaneously too large and too small😭
@@JimPankey Just threw it out there for any who may not realize it. It seems to be almost common knowledge for guitarists but not everyone has ventured there. Hope your doing even better than the last time I commented about a month ago. Older, has it's perks and downfalls but older banjos in decent shape are incredible, ha, ha.
Hi Jim. I really would love to learn to play, I am the man, Thomas. I cannot find anywhere than teaches this brilliant song. Can you help? 😊 Nadine, England.

@@JimPankey how do I know what I need? Based on a song I'm trying to learn?
@@conradbennett3251 If the song you're trying to learn doesn't have an Ebm then there's no reason to need it.
While watchin' Am on your video I to though ""uggggh", but holdin' down the 3rd and 4th string at the same time does work, thanks
Glad I could help
Thanks man

Hey Jim! I asked you a question on your Livestream video in the comment section. Please get back with me Thanks!
Maybe ask me here. I don’t see anything from you that I’ve left unanswered.

He's so close to playing "Stairway to Heaven" in this video lol
You know, “he” is me… right?

Keep at it. It's not something you'll just be able to do. Give yourself time, and do your best.
Must understand a chord can be produced without being the exact notations of what may be chords in a how to book.
…and that’s part of the process. Once you’re open to thinking outside of the “chord box” there are a lot of possibilities.

Hay. Jim. Do you. Hold. All. Of. Your. Fanger s .on. all. Strange. Wen. I. Do. It. Is. Not. The. Same. Tone.
Yes, if I’m holding the full chord I need to use multiple fingers.
