  • We are back with another Dolly Parton cake mix - Cooking with Carlos episode. As you all know we received a lot of Dolly Parton coconut cake mixes during our North American tour! They were all from the brand Duncan Hines. Both of us are big fans of Dolly Parton so we really enjoyed these presents!
Last time we tried, it was a somewhat chaotic baking Dolly Parton coconut cake mix session, which you can watch here: • Trying out Dolly Parto... . The same day we tried to bake one of the other Dolly Parton cake mixes, and today you can see whether we managed to bake a cake or not! Hopefully we can make Dolly Parton proud this time around!
We hope you will enjoy it!

Good cake but you didn’t need the cream inside Carlos, sorry to say Arne was right. But all the same it looked as if it was tasty.it’s just the cream making it slide. , with the quantity of it. . Never mind third time lucky, where would we be without a good laugh while your cooking. Haha😅 you have nothing to get the coconut to stick to on the side, but the cake looks good inside.

As someone else said, you need to use a mixer not a blender. Also, you need to cool the cakes thoroughly first otherwise the frosting melts. Then, place one of the layers on the plate with the flat side facing UP, frost it with about a third of the mixture and then place the other cake flat side DOWN and use the other two-thirds of the mixture to frost the top and sides. The addition of the whipped cream layer has made it slippery too. You could just enjoy that on the side.

It’s the cream that is making cake slide. I think you should serve the cake with cream, instead of mixing it with the frosting. Arne is shaping up as a baker, and Carlos you should be a little bit more patient. But it’s a success so enjoy!

you guys are sooooo funny. When I was a child, my mother made a cake with a layer of jello in the middle. When she carried the cake to the table, the jello started jiggling. She started laughing and the jello wiggled some more, and then she laughed more. And when she put it on the table, the jello wiggled right off the cake and down the table

You are using a blender you need to whip air into your batter. So you use a hand mixer which has whisks, which beat the mix to add air. You get a airy more fluffy cake.

Cakes need to be cold before adding the frosting. Stir frosting in the can until fluffy. Place a ring of frosting on bottom layer then add whipped cream in the center to hold it in. Add top cake layer. Do a small amount of frosting over top and place in freezer to set the frosting; then add final layer of frosting. You both did great and the cake looked 🤤

What a wonderful episode! I don't know what I loved more the chaotic creative baking style or Carlos or Arne's compulsive cleaning and taste testing. It was the best of what fun in the kitchen should be. As someone who loves to bake and who has taken some of those classes Carlos was talking about here are some tips. Instead of buttering your baking pans take a bit of olive or vegetable oil on a paper towel and grease them well. With the cake pans you have, it will help them slide off. Next when your cakes are cooling...take a cerated knife and cut the " hump" or round part off the top part of your cake so that you have a nice even layer. The bonus is you get to taste your cake with those bits you've cut off. Lastly if your cake is sliding or if you want to make one that is more than 2 layers high. You can buy cake stabilizers that you insert inside the cake similarly like what Arne did with the squewer. Straws can also be used. Then when serving the cake you simply remove them as you come across them. Please continue to bake. This was the brightest spot I'm my day. Sending love ❤️

My husband and I were laughing so hard! You want some tips? Canned icing is hard so it’s good to stir it up so it softens. Letting the cake cool longer and putting the round side onto the plate would help as well! It looked so good in the end! ❤❤

There is a difference between cooking and baking. In cooking there is a lot of room to be creative, and you can taste along the way. In baking it is more like chemistry/science if you change one thing it changes the composition, and you don't know how until it is finished baking, or when your putting the cake together Still the cakes have looked great, and by your reactions have tasted great, too. I think I want to see if they sell them near me and give one a try.

What fun! Arne had the right idea with the skewer but you needed more of them and cut them off below the top of the cake. Tjis will stabilize your cake. Then remove them as you cut the cake. There is also such a thing as a naked cake where only the tops are frosted. Then if you want cream in the middle...make a ring around the layer with just frosting. Put your cream within the ring then place the top layer of your cake on top. The ring of frosting will hold the layers together and prevent the cream from dripping out. You could also put jam, lemon curd or cut up fruit in the center of the ring. All great choices! Keep the laughs coming as we all need and appreciate them.

Make sure your cake is completely cool. A warm cake will melt the frosting. Use a metal cake spatula to spread the frosting. Dipping it in a glass of hot water helps spread the frosting. You can mix the whipped cream with the frosting in small quantities to make a fluffier frosting. But not much. Whip the cream to stiff peaks before you add it. Most important....make sure those cakes are cooled down all the way. If all else fails,....use a 9x13 pan for a one layer cake.

Arne you are right, the cake should have been cold before frosting it so the frosting does not melt or seep into the cake and no cream in the middle because it just makes the layers slide around. Pure frosting (not mixed with cream Carlos!) is good and sticky, so keeps the layers stuck together making it easier to frost the top. Also, stick the flat sides together or else it’s like trying to frost the top of a spinning top when you try to decorate the top of the cake! Poor Arne was getting so upset, bless him, he gets so worried about his Dolly cakes! Domestic chaos in the Arne and Carlos house is pure joy to watch. Take care 👨‍🍳🎂🍰

Love to watch and share a slice of your coconut confection. First layer of cake- put top of cake face down. Apply a thin coat of frosting to cover, then add additional frosting. The first thin layer of frosting is called a crumb coat. Frost the top and sides in the same way.
Turning the bottom layer ‘upside down’ will prevent the open gap between layers. You could even add a layer of whipped cream with the frosting…just imagine how honed in your skills will be after baking all in your Dolly inventory. It’s a pleasure watching you two experiment and have fun learning something new.🎉

Tip 1 turn the layer that you are using on the bottom upside down then frost on flat side. Tip 2 work with a completely cooled cake icing a fresh cake is really tricky. Tip3 next cake add either cream whipped with a bit of sugar or the icing but not both. Tip4 when you add the second layer put the flat side down so the two flats or bottoms of the cake are together and that should sole the sliding issue The top of the cake is the rounded part. Also, if your bottom cake does not lay flat on the kickplate, you can trim the bump off the cake. It will be the bottom of the cake and no one will see it and Arnie can eat it lol so fun to watch keep practising guys.

You guys did great!! Maybe one tip to keep everything from sliding around, is place the flat sides of the 2 cakes together in the middle

Love to ❤️ you both from Montana!

Love watching the two of you. Have for several years. I want to try cooking with Dolly's cake mixes. One thing I do with a cake mix is cook cookies. My grandkids love to help me make the cookies. They are quick and take less time tell they can lick the bowl, beater & eat the cookies.
Recipe is Mix in a mixer (or stir) dry cake mix, 2 eggs & 1/2 cup oil in a bowl. This makes a thick batter that we use a small ice cream scoop to plop the batter on a cookie sheet. I get about 12 cookies spaced out on a cookie sheet a (it will spread a little). Bake 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 - 12 minutes. Frost with frosting when cool. The coconut cookies would be good with coconut sprinkled on top after frosting.

So many very good comments! Another one is: if you want event tastier coconut, spread it very thinly on a baking sheet and toast it for only a few minutes in the oven, cool, then set it aside. Do this in advance of baking your cake layers. Sprinkle it on with your fingers and gently pat on the iced cake. Don’t add any cream!

Fun video. I recommend cutting off the "butts" off the cakes after they cool. The butt is the rounded top - cut it straight across. Second, put the cut side down on the cake plate . The butts you can freeze for a snack for some later date or nibble on now. Third, spread the jarred icing on the smooth side that is facing up. Place the second cake on top - cut side down on the frosting that you just spread. The two together should be level - no rounded top. Then you could spread whipped cream frosting (that Carlos made) on top or use the rest of the jarred icing. The jarred icing is quiet thick and that is why the cake would slip around when you were spreading the jarred frosting with having whipped cream on the inside. Whipped cream is quiet soft. Then as you did, sprinkle coconut around the sides (like Arne did) and on the top of the cake.

Yes. An offset spatula for spreading.

A few tips: A bent frosting spatula is so helpful. If the frosting is too stiff, whip in just a touch (no more than 1 teaspoon at a time) of milk. For the bottom layer, I use a large serrated knife to horizontally cut off the "dome" to give you a flat surface on which to place the second layer. When you frost the first layer, use enough frosting to push some off to cover the sides of the bottom layer. Now, half of the cake is totally frosted. If the second layer won't stay in place, use two or three skewers. Let the frosting set before cutting into it. I am giving you a lot of credit for trying and having fun, and as you say, it still tastes the same, but if you make a perfect cake, we wouldn't have these fun videos!

The best analogy I can think of is buying an A&C knitting pattern and deciding I'm going to crochet it using wire instead of yarn and then deciding to block it in paint instead of steaming it and then wondering why it didn't fit. This would be a very good commercial for Betty Crocker. 😊
Your coconut seems much more finely cut than American coconut. Ours is in shreds at least a centimeter long; yours looks like snow.

I’m sorry you felt your cake was a failure but I have to say this episode was a stunning success! I laughed so hard I was crying! Tips…cake should cool completely before frosting and layer the flat sides together in the middle. If the rounded side placed on the plate is too rounded for your liking you can shave the rounded part off the top of that layer before flipping it over on the plate. If you do that, make sure the cut side faces the plate and the bottom as it baked in the pan is now in the middle. The cut side will tend to crumble when you spread the icing. You want to spread the icing on an uncut side.

Hi Arne and Carlos. Love watching you two in the kitchen. Makes my day.
Yes let the cakes cool completely. Before you put the cake on the plate Put a little frosting on the dish first to hold the cake in place. Also round side of cake down so flat side is facing up to frost. second layer flat side down so flat side on top of flat side then frost. You will get the technique right. Keep practicing. I love your pretty cake plate ❤

Oh my goodness! Thank you Arne and Carlos for turning a bad start to my day into laughter😆🤣 Poor Arne, Carlos is so messy and Arne doesn't want a mess in the middle😂 If you guys are going to continue your baking tradition you need an icing spatula, they are very long and metal. I love how Arne keeps going back to his needlework, he really doesn't like cooking but his love for Dolly trumps it! I think you would have been ok if, like Arne said, you had the centre cake flat and mixing the cream and a bit of icing together before putting in the middle. Carlos is a 'good enough' guy and Arne is the perfectionist (like me!)🥥🥥🥥🥥

Such a fun episode. Lot's of laughing out loud! I'm so glad you guys can laugh at yourselves! We enjoy it so much too. In Carlos's defense, in my opinion baking is a far more precise procedure than cooking. You actually need to follow the directions accurately unless you have the experience needed to alter the recipe. There may be some assumptions of "how to" when it comes to cake mixes from America as well. No worries, it tastes good no matter what it looks like! haha

    • @elsieb3176
      @elsieb3176 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. Baking is chemistry in action, so directions need to be followed exactly.

I think I’m with Carlos on the being creative twist--how about a little dark rum in the cake batter, some pineapple chunks between the layers, and waaa-LAH! A piña colada cake! 😊
