The AYA No. 2 Sidelock Shotgun - A Look at Aguirre y Aranzabal Fine Guns

  • We caught up with Gregg Elliot of Dogs and Doubles to get a rundown of the the AYA No. 2 sidelock shotgun. The No. 2 stands as the Spanish gunmaker Aguirre y Aranzabal most popular shotgun in the United States. Based on the classic Holland and Holland sidelock design it stands as testament to quality craftsmanship in shotguns.
The AYA No. 2 can be ordered in 12-, 16-, 20-, 28-gauge and .410 bore. Barrel length and fixed shotgun chokes are selected by the user to customize to your shooting applications.
The English scroll engraving on the gun comes standard. Unlike the AYA No. 1 however, the No. 2 is laser-engraved rather than hand-engraved, cutting labor costs and significantly bringing the price and time of production down. The action finish has three options: case-hardened, old silver or white finish.
Wood grade options can also be selected by the individual for their shotgun. Finishes include oil and gloss offerings (I went with oil). The stock options include just about anything you can think of from Monte Carlo to straight English stocks. I went with the straight English as my double gun collection has expanded and I've developed a profound love for the design. The fit of the shotgun can be either to your specifications, or someone at their stateside distributors can do the measurements for you--length of pull, comb, cast, all fitted to your personal build.

I was fitted and purchased a 16 gauge #2 in 2013 through field sport. Love it. With over 16000 rounds thru it only repairs are 1 broken main spring and I ejector.

I bought a No.2 secondhand last year. Made in 2003, it has barely been shot and is very tight on the action. It’s one of my favourite shotguns in my collection. The other being a Browning.

A buddy of mine bought one in Vegas for $1500 back in maybe 2015 at Bass Pro’s fine gun room (Cabelas?) ans he had the Kings tour.
Anyways, I went down there a year later and asked for the same manager and got treated like shit. I had the money to spend and they blew me off.
Meanwhile, my buddy had enjoyed an amazing shotgun alm these years and I always felt put off. I’d still buy one but it’d be a hurdle. My loss.

A new AyA no.2 is around $ 9500.00 now in 2023. Like everything else the purchasing value of the dollar isn't what it was just a few years back.

I have a No. 2 , 12 gage since last summer. Worth every euro. I recommend a wood upgrade and bespoke measurements.

awesome guns. I just wish the "affordable" good quality new SXS wasnt 6-7k:) its still out of reach all but the elite or a single man who is obsessed:). Hand made guns cost what they cost - so its hard to criticize....just wish a company like Ruger or Winchester could make an elegant good quality field grade SXS for say $1700.

@@union310 you must be in the UK. The US did not get a lot of imports of fine British and Spanish guns...maybe a few early field grade AYA's imported by Sears Roebuck and the like that are crude in comparison... but from what I can see something like a used #2 in good condition will be 3k and up here.

With the greatest respect to AYA (I own one) it isn't 70% of a Holland and Holland ...believe me, and if you think it is then you have never fired one.

A prominent UK expert on British shotguns wrote that Spanish sidelocks make him feel physically sick. Maybe a little strong as they have their place and are solid reliable things, but as you say, they will never be the real thing. I still have my #3 20 bore, my 15th birthday present, bought SH, and which I thought was the bees knees.

I know I'm going to get flak over this, but the guns aren't "AYA". They should be referred to as "A and A". The Y in the name is the Spanish for "and", and strangely enough is pronounced "E". Just sayin'.
