I had an alarm having bought a steak with security on it. Collared by security, I showed them the receipt, and they apologised. I then made a massive scene, pointing out that them failing to do their job properly doesn’t mean they can accuse me of being a thief, and how disgusted I was, given I spend close to a grand a month in their supermarket. Gave me a £10 voucher to apologise. Give what you get!

Reggie let me point out some things, 1) Alarm go off when they put security sensor on a product. The problem is the staff may not remove them or not know they are there. 2) Just because a alarm has gone off does not mean something is stolen. 3) To prove a item is stolen, you need a witness taking the item been taken and then not paying for it. This puts the burden of proof heavy on the side security provide proof of stealing not the public.

If an alarm rings when exiting a shop there is no requirement to stop for shop security and there is no requirement to open your bags for inspection. There is also no requirement to explain or speak to any security drone at any time. These people have no more powers than you.

    LEGALS
Assault & Battery by the woman "of a certain age". A criminal offence.
You should report her to the company and she should lose her SIA licence. Ask for a written apology as the company is responsible for that illegal behaviour.

As someone who works in the security industry and holds an SIA the behaviour of these guards is appalling and makes us all look bad first of all a retail officer should not exceed the 5m rule also if they havent followed the ASCONE guidelines a stop is inappropriate and unprofessional if the alarm goes off it can be multiple things ive seen hearing aids set them off, you may be in a high crime area but it does not give you the right to harrass members of the public, in a situation like this just be friendly and ask them politely to have a chat most people will stop and ask whats up. For those who are curious ASCONE stands for Access Selection Concealment Observation Non payment and Exit if you break observation for a few seconds on someone you believe to have concealed goods dont stop them its not worth your job if they have concealed goods or theres a reasonable suspicion of such behaviour then maintain observation before making a stop were not police were a deterrent with civil recivery powers in a retail setting.
Secondly if i am in a public setting record me all you like youre not breaking any laws i can request not to be filmed politely however i can not and will not bully and intimidate you into stopping filming, if im in a private premises then i will ask you not to film (depending on the clients instructions) however i will use common sense if youre out with friends and youre documenting yourselves having a good time ill more than likely keep an eye on you but not intervene unless asked to do so in contrast to this if i believe you are filming something that is either confidential or is in aid of hostile reconnaisance then i will approach you politely and show basic customer service by asking very basic questions before addressing the nature of what youre filming if i deem this to be suspect i will ask you to stop filming and if you fail to comply i will ask you to leave the premises at no point do i need to make physical contact with you at all unless you become a physical threat to myself or the public then i am able to restrain you using non pain compliant techniques (gentle restraining / escorting off premises) if it escalates my duty is to protect the public and involve the police if deemed necessary.
We are security officers and we should hold ourselves to certain standards dont be a bully, dont harrass citizens and dont over step or embellish your powers this isnt 1990 in essex on a club door be aware everyone is on camera now days and be aware google exists the oublic are far more clued up than you realise and abuse of power is not tolerated by professionals in the industry.
