- Pioneered by Juninho, popularized by Ronaldo, is the legendary ‘Knuckleball’ freekick-exploit officially patched in 2023? Sadly, it would appear so, as all signs point to rounder balls being far worse/more chaotic than their rougher counterparts. Oh how I wish we’d never learned that. By making it more smooth, you are removing crevices, thus making it more round, and less filled with small micro canyons
It is not about round. It is about slick. Footballs are operated in critical Reynolds number conditions (same as baseballs, tennis balls and golf balls). This was not unknown at that time. The issue with the new balls was the lack of seams disturbing the airflow and thus inducing a turbulent boundary layer. In critical Reynolds number conditions the boundary layer switches between turbulent and laminar flow chaotically and thus reducing or increasing air resistance on the surface unpredictably. This makes the ball turn suddenly.
This is a common issue especially with laminar flow and can be countered with surface steps or blowers enforcing turbulent flow before it gets chaotic.
Please explain critical Reynolds’s number conditions
What do we have here. Are you an engineer?

If we’re being technical about it the bumps in golf balls our design to make the ball go faster and further. Not to prevent the ball from flying off in Random directions (which wasn’t a problem for golf because the surface area wasn’t big enough to cause that much drag in a single direction)

That's also the reason why golf balls have dimples
Yes 👍
That’s a different phenomenon. Golf balls have dimple to reduces drag. The Jabulani didn’t have a problem with drag, it was the unpredictable flight path which was caused by the shape of the seams. This phenomenon is closer to like a baseball or cricket ball

@@tjm2218it's actually a very simple problem.
It was, however, a very misunderstood problem (past tense). This is how a great deal of things in our lives evolve. Something that's poorly understood has a very simple explanation or a simple application.
The microwave oven, lightbulbs, or a Bic lighter are all great examples of this. Almost every home in the United States has each of these. Take them back in time just 200 years and they're magic. The principles are brain dead simple though. So simple, in fact, that a highschool student with a brain "gets it" today.

Footballs aren't supposed to be round, but roung enough
I don't play or watch football, but maybe there is a reason to explore other patterns for balls that expand the options players have with funky aerodynamics
Yes. That's why I laugh when people mock "American Football". The reason that ball is a pointed-oblong shape is because it is more predictable, accurate, and aerodynamic.
Diego Forlan loves Jabulani.

Didn't they already know this? Like with the history of the golf ball
Idk but the ball was made sometime around 2010 in the South African World Cup
It was a manufacturing error. There is no issues (outside of a small optical illusion due to the pattern) with the design itself. The balls used in the WC had a manufacturing issue, the seams werent deep enough, making it "too round"
