He was an uneducated, low IQ fellow. They said "smile for the camera' so he did. It is a creepy smile though. 😒 it's probably the most attention he ever got. And it may have been the only time he got his picture taken.
So basically, the sick coward could beat and hurt young kids, but couldn’t take his punishment like a man. He could give it, but not take it! I’m glad the victims got justice! I’ve never heard of this case. Thank you for teaching me something new. Rest in peace to all victims.

He slumped down and that reduced the drop. If he has stood up straight the rope would have broken his neck. Northcott’s legs gave way and he began to collapse just as the trap sprang. His collapse took the slack out of the rope, and as a result his fall was too short to break his neck.
That's a possibility. Those people at San Quentin knew what they were doing. A lot of prisoners were hung back in those days, and the prison staff had lots of practice doing this. They probably used the US Army chart for determining rope length based on weight and height. No, I don't think they goofed it up accidentally.
Clint Eastwood made a masterpiece of a movie about this incident. Its called changeling, it was horrific what they did to a woman during this case. Look it up

The Americans stopped hanging people because of incidents like this. They eventually came to the realisation that they weren’t very good at it. The problem was that too many organisations had the responsibility and they just didn’t have the expertise to do it properly. Here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, there was a state executioner who had attended hundreds of executions and knew what they were doing. Not that I’m in favour of capital punishment.
