Hi Jamie, I've been listening to Sissel for 25 yrs now and imo she has one of the purest most angelic voices I have ever heard. You should watch her sing 'Pie Jesu' to hear her go really high effortlessly but there are plenty of videos out there that will show that she can sing in several genres. Welcome to Sissel. Enjoy your journey. She is a crossover soprano who sings anything beautifully. May I suggest "Silent Night " and "O Helga Natt, O Holy Night sung in Swedish. She is still singing and currently on her Christmas tour in Scandinavia. She is also the haunting vocal throughout the movie Titanic.
Right off you'll notice one of her classic traits. In most of her presentations she smiles as she sings. She also stands very still and mostly sings before a live audience (not many studio renditions). She didn't showcase her tremendous range here but you definitely heard a very distinct voice that is immediately recognized by all that knows of her work. And even though she sings in no less than 15 languages she speaks absolutely perfect English (with an American (not British) dialect). I've been listening to her for over 30 years and in fact she's been my favorite female artist ever since I first heard her as a 20 year old.
That was the only piece whereby I actually saw her tear up during the standing ovation that she received. She lost it there... Through all these years she has retained who she was as a 20 year old. She has not allowed fame and fortune to change her. Yep she's still Sissel...
T'isn't opera but lyrics attached to Dvorak's tune from his 9th symphony. Nor is she an opera soprano. She is herself, a lyric soprano who sings whatever she likes and 4 decades of doing just that behind her. Fame & fortune aren't as important to her as love of friends & family.
Yes, "Going home" is lyrics added to Antonin Dvorak's 2nd movement "Largo" from his 9th symphony "From the New World" written when Dvorak was living in USA. It was about how he missed his home area Bohemia in Austria / Hungary, now the Czech republic. One of Dvorak's students William Arms Fisher wrote the lyrics "Going home". Sissel made an awesome perfomance of this great tune in the beautiful Røros cathedral in Norway.
Exactly... she's the same girl now as she was 30 years ago when I first heard her. Yep she remains true to her Nordic traditions while occasionally visiting (but never remaining) various continents.
