  • Climb aboard for this hot & steamy ride...
The communist Khmer Rouge regime ruined the Cambodian railway system & for a very long time it was unusable. In recent times it has been repaired & is up & running again. Despite breakdowns & various issues, slowly it is being improved. Since it was rumored to be re-opening a few years ago it's been on my must do list. Finally it's time to ride the rails in Cambodia! Come along & join the adventure!

Another sensational and thought-provoking video. Delighted to se the 'White Rose ' is still up and running . I have opened a beer ( the renowned Yebisu from Japan ) in its honour . For those dwelling by the shadow of a chasm, your lectures are enthralling .

Yes, that restaurant is a great vantage point on the corner there. I haven't tried Yebisu, I will be sure to look out for it! Cheers!

Nice video mate, I’m staggered how much Battambang has changed over the years since our first visit in 1999 just after the land border with Thailand had re-opened, we decided to check Battambang out after a few weeks in Siem Riep, en-route to Phnom Penh on the boat you mention, twisting along the river.
On arrival at the Chayya Hotel, we were warned that as the last remnants of the Khmer Rouge were reportedly still active in neighbouring Pailin making occasional forays into Battambang, the fact that the hotel had a security guard armed with a Kalashnikov, to be back in the hotel by sundown, there were few options for entertainment in Battambang then but we decided to wander around town finding a nice beer garden where we had a few cold ones, as 5pm neared we decided to heed the hotel’s advice, as the sun sank, we stopped at a small restaurant on the way back to the hotel, which was full of surly faced armed soldiers who didn’t seem too pleased to see us, so we had some food a beer then made a hasty exit, back to out hotel, to our relief the hotel sold beer had a well-stocked fridge, so we opted for a night on the balcony, as the darkness fell, what little life there had been on the streets all but dissolved apart from a small store over the road, all was in utter dark, silence, very sinister, eerie. Nothing stirred in the street below, I would pop down to get beers for us, my lady was enjoying the whole thing, as the hours crawled by, we ran out of ice, the hotel had none, but they told me I could try the small shop over the road, which I did, not without a tad of trepidation, mission accomplished I went back to our room, where we had a good few more beers, that afternoon we had noticed a night club at the back of the market, which then had one food option, a basic restaurant selling entrail soup and similar! Emboldened by the beers, we decided to check the night club out, so we venture out to the market over the road, under the eye of the guard and his Kalashnikov, only to find the club open, but as deserted as the town outside was, so we returned to the hotel, and more beer though as we had an early share taxi to Phnom Penh booked for 8am, we couldn’t overdo it. Keep up the good work. I’d love to see a report on Highway 9 between Poipet and Siem Riep, which also has been totally upgraded since our 9 hour trip along it in 1999.

Brilliant story, thanks! It's those old road tales that I love the most. Sitting on a hotel balcony in South-East Asia drinking a cold one with good company is about as enjoyable as it gets. Battambang is still excellent for that. Poipet to Siem Reap road has been decent for a long time now, if only one lane each way. I missed traveling on that when it was a dirt road, which friends told me of, as I was hitchhiking all around Europe in those times, though I did do a jaunt around Thailand back then too. There's talk of a real highway being built between Phnom Penh & Poipet, which would be a game changer, & even a high speed train.
