  • We are converting a shed into our home! Our goal is to be debt free on a homestead/farm. We have worked to clear land on our 20 acres homestead for the past 2 years and are now ready to start our homesite! After researching foundations for shed, we have decided to lay a gravel pad as a foundation for the blocks for our building! Our shed is pre-owned so it will have to be driven and delivered on site. Due to the size of the building, it cannot be lifted onto sono tubes for support.
We had a little over 40 tons of gravel delivered, and used our Yanmar 221 tractor to move the gravel into place, bucket by bucket. It handled it like a champ. Using the "float mode" on the bucket is so helpful when moving tons of material and leveling the ground. It is a very nice feature that we have used countless times in the past 2 years.
After getting the gravel in place, we used a rented plate compactor to make an even more solid foundation. It worked wonderfully and was very easy to use.

Thank you!! This helps so much!! We are in the planning stages and I feel much more confident knowing we can do a gravel pad instead of concrete!

So glad it helped! Doing the gravel pad saved us so much money and renting the plate compactor made a huge difference! Best of luck to you!

You did gravel on top of grass and dirt. Did you have any sinking or settling of your building over time.

About how thick does the gravel need to be?

I was told 1 foot but after doing this I’m concerned now about settling of the building. Depending on your particular soul type and conditions you may opt for road base or something like that.

Also, gravel may tend to sink into the soil over time.
