What are you talking about meganium is great in radical red, the only currently relevant Pokémon game until the Pokémon Company decides to do more with millions of dollars than some guys in a discord can do with their free time.
Rillaboom and Incin make up two strong parts of the Balance Core, with the third part being either Tapu Fini, Urshifu, or some other really strong water type. Which is insane if you think about it, that these two starters need legends to partner with it.
Well, it is 2/3 of a grass-water-fire core, and both of them excel in pretty much the same thing (pivoting, faking out, supporting the other mon, while being tanky and having an ok/good offensive pressure), so obviously they both have great synergy. It basically goes like this “if I am using Rillaboom, I might as well use a fire and a water type with it. If I am using a fire type I might as well use Incineroar”.
I think it's notable that Rillaboom was still good even without Grassy Glide in SV Regulation D. While Grassy Surge + Glide is a very good trick, Rillaboom has proven itself that it has viability beyond that.
Doesn’t it have fake out too? And Knock off? Those are some good support attacking moves i call it , Fake out is always First and Knock off knocks off the opponents item
Incineroar is just too good. Like you mentioned it has intimidate, fake out, parting shot and so many other tools that make it an extremely effective support Pokémon. VGC just isn’t the same without it Edit: OMG THEY GAVE IT HELPING HAND WHAT WAS GAME FREAK THINKING

If Swampert got access to Palafin's Jet Punch and Recover (or even Life Dew), it could fill a role. An ability change in the same vein as Empoleon would be nice but what would we even give him?: - Swift Swim would be great just like the Mega. (Not a fan of this, too reliant on rain) - Water Veil to prevent burns. (Least good) - Adaptability to increase it's wall-breaking potential. (My personal pick) - Regenerator/Water Absorb or Dry Skin would be completely nuts.
@@bgc0this is the way. Unironically, Sap Sipper Swampert wouldn't even be broken imo. It'd be pretty damn good as a Trick Room sweeper. If given Ice Spinner(which it should be) it'd become a counter to Amoongus. But, I don't think it would be too powerful. With Ogerpon existing, Swampert is completely unviable.

Give Meganium Revival Blessing and Regenerator, and it'd be a VGC staple. Not only would those TWO things make it viable, but they're also thematically fitting (all of Meganium's dex entries talk about how it revives dead plants just by breathing on them). And it wouldn't be out shone by Amoongus, coz they're both doing different (all be it similar) things. Both want to support the team, but Amoongus does so by disrupting your opponent (Spore, Rage Powder). Meganium would greatly increase the longevity of your team via Revival Blessing, Aromatherapy, Heal Pulse, and Screens (yeah, Meg can be a screen setter). Now combine all that with Intimidate spam. It even gets Helping Hand.
Im not even into competitive or anything but Incineroar and Rillaboom are my fav starters of their respective gens design wise. So it's cool to know that they're great in VGC too
I just find it funny that the buff Tony the Tiger-esque wrestler cat isn’t a slower, hard hitting choice band user but instead found a role as a do-it-all support pivot tool and gamefreak probably intended for it to be a mid tier attacker but just leaned into what it’s niche turned out to be which is how it ended up getting intimidate and parting shot later on
It makes sense if you consider what Incineroar is. He's a wrestling heel. He's not there to win, he's there to play the villain, put on a show, rile up the crowd, and be a menace. Hence why things like Intimidate, Parting Shot, and Fake Out work so well with him.

Hey Moxie! I'm the one that made the format tier list template you showed that split up VGC 2018 into the pre- and post-Incineroar. That was a very conscious decision based on how it felt to me at the time. I expected some backlash about that, but I was pretty surprised that basically everyone seemed to agree with me.
Cant believe you forgot to mention Quaquaval it literally got top 8 at the Hartford PC at the regional event in 2023... the gay duck will never be forgotten, or sadly used

Also, I really wish Sceptile could be in these list for once 😭 I really hope GF stop disrespecting Sceptile, and at least attempt to try to make it good like they did with the Sinnoh starters. Switch it’s attack stats, give it a better ability, add the dragon typing l, something 😭 (also I know Mega Sceptile has the dragon typing, but normal Sceptile getting that means draco meteor)
Fun Fact: Swampert still has the Highest Base Stat Total of any starter, at 535, beating out Delphox and Infernape by 1 Point! This holds true for Mega Starters as well, Mega Swampert's at 635, beating out Both Mega Charizards by again 1 Point! Truly, Mudkip Stocks are unrivaled.
You missed Infernape - its pretty power crept these days but it had usage in older generations as a fast Fake Out + Feint sash mon with Overheat and Close Combat to do pretty good damage Blastoise has also had real niches in VGC
The better question is what is the third best starter? Incineroar is obviously a cut above the rest and there's also a pretty clear gap between rillaboom and the rest.
I would say it depends on the format. It general I would say it was gmax venusaur, but with no niche I would say it meowsacrada now. Flowertrick is simply op.
Grass types are always my starter, but I'm glad litten has been the only one to almost surpass the gens grass starter... would've liked it more if it wasnt for incineroar's interactions in the anime (greabbing litten by the head almost killing it)
Depends on the “strength” you’re looking for. If you’re looking for pure aggression, Protean and Libero starters are very good. Of course, they’ll fold to any meaningful damage against them or crumple against hard walls, but generally have tools to reposition and come in to exploit weaknesses later.
I don't play competitively, but if I did, and had the choice to use Primarina or Tapu Fini, I'd always choose Primarina, since I just love her that much, and she's my fave Starter. Same goes for me using Meowscarada or Serperior over the other Grass types, since they're my two favorite Grass Starters, and also Cinderace over the other Fire types, being my number 1 favorite Fire Starter. And for the opposite reason, I would never use Incineroar, Rillaboom, or Venusaur, because I don't like them very much.

still upset that I had to deal with 10+ years of the Samurott line being treated terribly in every facet of the franchise, and was rewarded with an effective replacement that still isn’t good in VGC with the original getting nothing.
The Pokémon company treated the gen 5 starters very dirty honestly. Even serperior, the one that is considered the best, it’s still not as good as others. All 3 of my boys need some more love
@@swampat4093 still, it’s a particularly bad example of a regional form just being a replacement instead of an effective sidegrade with distinct niches. the original Samurott is barely good in PU now, let alone in VGC. There’s no reason Torterra should get Shell Smash and Empoleon should get an actual ability while anyone who wants to transfer up their original Samurott has to deal with the fact it gets neither, and it can’t do anything to distinguish itself from its regional form that probably won’t continue to be included in the games after this gen.
I’m kinda shocked greninja wasn’t mentioned here given that it was liter banned to ubers once it got gunk shot in ORAS and Ash greninja tore up OU in Gen 7, literally having a higher special attack stat than kyogre.
I dont play in any tournaments but all of my friends play and we are pretty competitive with each other. Ive had massive success with incineroar. I never thought to use Venasaur because on paper he looks so weak. Maybe i need to give him a chance. I cant wait to see who you have as the top 3.

There is no way they didn’t design it to be a intimidate fake out pivot

still upset that I had to deal with 10+ years of the Samurott line being treated terribly in every facet of the franchise, and was rewarded with an effective replacement that still isn’t good in VGC with the original getting nothing.
The Pokémon company treated the gen 5 starters very dirty honestly. Even serperior, the one that is considered the best, it’s still not as good as others. All 3 of my boys need some more love

@@swampat4093 still, it’s a particularly bad example of a regional form just being a replacement instead of an effective sidegrade with distinct niches. the original Samurott is barely good in PU now, let alone in VGC. There’s no reason Torterra should get Shell Smash and Empoleon should get an actual ability while anyone who wants to transfer up their original Samurott has to deal with the fact it gets neither, and it can’t do anything to distinguish itself from its regional form that probably won’t continue to be included in the games after this gen.

Maganium regenerator plus support moves
Sceptile, swapt it's attack with it's sp attack
Swampert, sap zipper or swift swim

I dont play in any tournaments but all of my friends play and we are pretty competitive with each other. Ive had massive success with incineroar. I never thought to use Venasaur because on paper he looks so weak. Maybe i need to give him a chance. I cant wait to see who you have as the top 3.
