Joko Widodo: 'A strong message to drug smugglers' | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • He was called the "president of the people" when he was inaugurated four-and-a-half months ago. Former furniture seller Joko Widodo, also known as "Jokowi", is a metal music lover and former mayor and governor, who stood out for his hands-on leadership style.
After a tough election campaign and a narrow win, expectations were high that a new wind would soon blow in the world's fourth largest country and third largest democracy of 250 million people.
But a hostile opposition and rocky coalition provided Widodo with a weak power base. His party leader, Megawati Sukarnoputri, is often jokingly called the country's "real" president.
And Widodo shocked many after he nominated a man charged with corruption as his new police chief. Since August 2014, Widodo's approval ratings have dropped from 71.73 percent by about 30 percent.
Widodo has also raised diplomatic tensions - in particular with Australia - with his firm stance on executing drug traffickers, most of them foreigners.
He tells Al Jazeera's Step Vassen: "I believe the Indonesian legal system is thorough in these cases and looks at the evidence. When I rejected clemency I took into consideration how many drugs they smuggled, how many pills they distributed .... The court has sentenced them and we cannot discriminate between countries."
Widodo remains steadfast in his decision to carry out the death sentences of 11 convicts - including two Australian nationals from the "Bali nine" drug smuggling ring - due to be executed on the prison island of Nusakambangan.
"We want to send a strong message to drug smugglers that Indonesia is firm and serious in tackling the drug problem, and one of the consequences is execution if the court sentences them to death, he says."
He also discusses his strategy on campaigning for the release of Indonesian citizens on death row and says he is open to the idea of abolishing the death penalty if that is what the country wants. Just this week, Indonesian diplomats at a Human Rights Council panel in Geneva said a ban on the death sentence could be reinstated.
"As a head of state of course I'm going to try to save my citizens from execution. That's my obligation as a president, as a head of state ... To protect my citizens who are facing the death penalty but on the other hand we have to respect other countries that apply capital punishment ... The constitution and the existing law still allow the death penalty. But if the Indonesian people want to change it in the future, then it's possible."
In this exclusive interview on Talk to Al Jazeera, the president of Indonesia explains his position on his country's scourge of drugs, religion, ISIL, the economy, and for the first time reveals his willingness to discuss the abolishment of the death penalty.

I spent five years in an Indonesian prison for possession of 0.3 gram of cocaine. I thought it was too harsh, but at the end of the day everyone has a choice: abide by the law or face the consequences. I bear no grudge and now fully support Indonesia's approach to fighting its serious drug addiction problem. the translation is not 100% accurate. A lot of important facts the president says have been eliminated. The translation makes things seem that the Indonesian president is saying another thing.
    such as:
"Saya kira"is not Ï believe". The more accurate translation is "I think", leaning more to an open opinion of the president. "I believe" in Indonesia is when they say "Saya percaya/yakin".
"how many drugs they smuggled, how many pills they distributed" in 6:03 , the real accurate translation should have been "how many drugs are circulated/distributed, how many kg that has been circulated/distributed, and how many hundreds of pills that are/have been circulated/distributed. That is what we are examining it [the issue] as a whole"
some statements are not translated. The translator must have ommited unimportant comments, but it is those emmited comments that brings out the emotions of the interviewee of those statements.
    --
Overall, this is a pretty good interview; a well-done interview I say. But given the lack of integrity in the translation accuracy, it feels like this product is a product for catching up the demand of criticising the president. This is not total truth. Lacks a credible translation for us expat viewers to judge Jokowi.
(Though I would have to say, the Indonesian justice system is understood strange by Western powers. I don't blame them for seeing how wrong the Indonesian president takes the step. The main problem is that this interview's translation widens the gap of understanding Jokowi's mindset, within the Western mindset. It does not serve the journalists' purpose of unveiling the whole total truth of the interviewee's way of thinking, to the general public. In other words, this defeats the purpose of journalism for total truth.) #aljazeera #jokowidodo #journalism #StepVaessen #indonesia

Step Vaessen is a long time critical correspondent in Indonesia. I applaud her commitment and obviously well prepared interview. Joko Widodo's government's stance on drug trafficking is controversial, some of his policies are questionable in substance and feasibility and it's true the honeymoon period after his election is waning. However, I believe - in contrast to previous leaders - this is a man not tainted by the settled elite of the past, and who works earnestly to set out and carry out policies. Also, the interviewer has a disturbing lack of decorum and a constant paternalistic and negative bias and style. You never see Christiane Amanpour, Katy Couric or even the guys from Fox News question their interviewees with such leading questions or dispositions.

Its a really difficult argument. Complicated. All I can offer is please don't do drugs. R.I.P boys. Condolences to the families. These deaths has strengthen my beliefs that God doesnt exist. Why 'western world' is not a problem with the execution of Bali terrorists, who have killed Australian tourist and some tourists from other countries.
But do not like the executions of drug smugglers from other countries, which has killed our Indonesian next generation? Very unreasonable.
Indonesia has executed terrorists and drug smugglers in the same place, on the island of Nusa Kambangan.

Indonesia President should discuss the possible abolishment of death penalty in near future because the purpose of present punishment is to remind and deter drug Traffickers to think that Indonesia is a safe heaven for drug trafficking, and once the system and society is gotten rid of this menace, to help healthy Indonesian generation move on the world stage to make positive impact. No one loves drugs, no parent would like their children in the company of a drug offender. I would never want to live to see my kids as drug takers.
