This song is from Dark Side of the Moon, which came out in 1973. The concert you're watching in this video was in 1994. This is generally considered to be one of the best concerts of all time, and you could choose any of it to react to and be happy. Pink Floyd at the time of this concert was comprised of three members: David Gilmour (lead singer, guitar), Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals) [RIP 2008], and Nick Mason (drums, percussion). When the song was written and first recorded Roger Waters (vocals, bass) was also a member. Some of their most brilliant lyrics are his. But through a hairy court battle that lasted a few years Roger Waters left and three remaining members went on to record a few more albums.
Because Pink Floyd's music is so highly layered it's necessary to have several more musicians and singers when they play live so they can reproduce what they do in the studio.
If you're going to watch more live Pink Floyd, I'd recommend Comfortably Numb, One of These Days, Great Gig in the Sky, and Sorrow from the Pulse concert, and On the Turning Away and Dogs of War from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert. If you're going to listen to studion versions I'd recommend every album from Meddle through The Division Bell. But if you want just a few songs to begin with, give Hey You, Time, Have a Cigar, and Echoes a listen. Don't let the length of any of Pink Floyd's songs dissuade you, they all leave you wanting more. Just let them take you where they want you. Pink Floyd have mastered the gradual build-up to set the mood, and they take their sweet time about it. Just let go, it's a journey, an experience. Enjoy! 💗✌🏽🤘🏽🖖🏽

This video was from 1994 PULSE concert at Earl's Court in London. It was 21 years after the song was released as part of The Dark Side of the Moon album. David Gilmour, the guitarist and lead singer is 78 years old (79 on March 6th of 2025). Basically, he's 2 weeks shy of being 1 year older than me. He was 48 years old in this live performance.

@@RobTalksMess-i6u And for good reason. It's arguably the greatest album of the 20th Century, and its long-term success in eye-popping sales is a testament to that argument. Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973. Wish You Were Here was released in '75. We're about to turn the calendar to 2025 and they're still the two greatest albums of my lifetime.

The saxophonist is Dick Parry, he was at school with Lead guitarist David Gilmour, the original lead guitarist was Syd Barrett, David Gilmour taught him to play guitar, and when Syd had to leave the band because of drug use David took his place, this change started Floyd's journey to stardom.

Saxophone was very big in early jazz, big band and through the 1950's early rock and roll and on into the 90's but you are right it has been lost in today's music. Nothing is layered in today's electronic sound like it was when we had multiple musicians with diverse styles and technical skills playing on each track. Now it is common to have one person and a machine trying to create all of it and it really doesn't work because everything is coming from one source, and talent as well as diversity get lost in the mix. Some of the old rockers could play multiple instruments and often would play all the instruments on their releases but the reality is they were true musicians and they understood music and music theory so they knew what they needed to accomplish to not have their music seem flat and how to use each instrument from a different perspective. Prince was a musician who played just about every instrument there was and played each one well. There are several others but he is one that comes to mind because he was picking up instruments almost as soon as he could walk and playing them like he had been doing so for decades. I had a friend who toured with Prince and he said that while other band members would go out after a show to bars and such, Prince would go back to his hotel to create and play music. He was a true genius of music, strange personality but incredible musician. As far as Pink Floyd and this song, it is a masterpiece. Pink Floyd's music takes the soul on a magic ride and the lyrics bend your thoughts into strange levels of understanding or lack there of. This is a fantastic band, I have always loved them. They were great live, too. I was lucky enough to be able to attend some of their concerts.

I would do the studio versions of Pink Floyd first, not just for the amazing Sonic experience, but for the lyrics which tend to be a cut above what you normally hear in popular music. Then you can compare with the live versions which are always off the charts when it comes to this band. Keyboardist Richard Wright is one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. None of the members of this legendary British band has ever played with anyone else. Wright passed away in 2008, RIP.
"Dark Side of the Moon" released in 1973, is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. It is a concept album and is an extraordinary listen... Meant to be listened to as a whole as nearly all the songs bleed into each other.
Check out "Comfortably Numb" studio version first, next. 👍

Pink Floyd always sounded immaculate live. Apart from being top musicians they used probably the most expensive and sophisticated surround audio system ever used for live performance. I was there on recording night, the sound quality was mind blowing. Btw. It is political. You say you don't know much about Pink Floyd but they are British and sit at number 3 in the all time album selling charts (behind Michael Jackson and AC/DC). This number is from The Dark Side of the Moon which spent 17 continuous years in the charts. In 1994 Pink Floyd were Dave Gilmour guitar/vocals, Nick Mason drums & Richard Wright keys/vocals plus a touring company of 8 musicians. Wright died 2008 and PF stopped performing, though Gilmour (now 78) and Mason (80) still tour with their own bands. The bassist since 1988, Guy Pratt plays for both bands.

Please don't let them dissuade you from listening to more Floyd. You may never enjoy their music to the degree we do, but, you will, by listening to more 60s,70s and 80s music, appreciate why we 'oldies' find today's music pretty boring. @RobTalksMess-i6u
