I loved your video; my dad gave me a Viking Husqvarna 21 in 1966 for my high school graduation gift. I used it to clothes my kids, husband and myself for many years, I still have it and use it for crafting. It has all the bells and whistles, so I think it was the top of the line at the time, it was used when I got it but in perfect shape, Thanks for the video it told me some things I didn't know about the machine.

When she bought herself a new one, she gave this one to me. I have very recently gotten a bit interested in taking up sewing, and this is the machine that I still have, and it’s now 62 years old, and works just fine 😊. I’ve only made a few curtains before, so I’m excited to expand my “reportoire” 😊

When I got my first Husqvarna 21E I was captivated by its color, its engineering, its single svelte arm and tray table, its capacity for 2 spools, its potential for an infinite number of stitches via adjustments and the 3 cams, its powerful motor, its peculiarly efficient floating bobbin, its neat little bobbin window, its minimal oiling points, its simple mechanical design and user-friendly setup, its superb weight and its outstanding practical performance of simply sewing anything and everything including leather and canvass WELL, without breaking needles and especially the potential for the machine to last many lifetimes.. A thought that entered my mind was 'Why aren't all sewing machines made like this' . If I was to improve anything I would switch the bobbin winding and engine housing covers from plastic to metal. The Bobbin winding housing suffers the most breakages on second hand machines and it's rare to find a machine nowadays, that is not cracked there. As soon as I got the machine, I began sewing up and modifying a quilt cover to form separate compartments to house 2 sleeping bags. Then I started sewing a few pairs of light weight trousers I had bought in Thailand, where the material was 'Space-Age' but the sewing was 'Stone-Age'...lol I was then 'Hooked' on my Husky 21E and after listening to the interesting and thorough 'In Stiches' video where the expert presenter gave a few 21E machines away to 'thrift-shops' , it almost brought tears to my eyes...lol I have about 5 or 6 old singer sewing machines, a Husqvarna 21E and a Husqvarna 21A. I want to preserve and protect these TITANS of industry and longevity and I have stored them away for another time. The Husqvarna 21E and A are in the most accessible places in my house right now and I have oiled them all with a special oil made in Bavaria in the 1800s to oil munitions like guns and pistols. It is called 'Ballistol' and its 'superpower' is that it DOES NOT RESINIFY. That means the oil does not turn to a Gum, after the volatile components have evaporated. That was the best thing I could do for my machines and I am confident that they will NOT 'Gum-Up' as long as they are in storage. Right now I have done all the sewing I needed to do, but I know when the time arises, my go-to-machine-of-choice will be the Exceptional Husqvarna Viking 21E. It is such a JOY to use, infinitely capable and so brilliantly engineered. It's my most favourite machine of all time. Thanks for your interest.

These days with the principle of 'Planned-Obsolescence' ruling the manufacturing ethos of current day design and manufacture, plastic geared sewing machines are not worth even considering to buy. That's why these machines-of-old are so valuable, even though most people do not recognise it. I sense a resurgence when they do...lol If you read the specifications of Ballistol on their home-page, you will get an idea about how valuable and useful this oil is. I have even oiled the fret-board of a guitar with this stuff and it made the wood come up like new. You can even use it on Leather. I keep looking for the Husqvarna 21E on sites like eBay and Gumtree, but they are like hens-teeth now. Suffice it to say that I will pick up another one when it happens to come my way. This was so informative. I've had my Husqvarana for 30 years! Brought it at a garage sale for $20 🤩Yesterday as I was sewing, it started to smoke. I've luckily found a repair shop. They say a new motor or rewired motor will cost up to $250. Definitely worth fixing as I very much doubt any machine you'd buy today would last 30+ years. I have never known what to do with all the different feet or wasn't aware of lots of the info in this video. I've only had it serviced once in all this time. I wasn't even aware where the oil went 🙄 I shall now maintain my beloved machine properly as it's such an amazing tough vintage beauty 😍 Thanks for the detailed information. Also I loved the cameo appearance of Molly the kitty 😍
Hi. That sounds like it could just be the capacitor that needs replacing and fortunately that costs a lot less to do than a new motor or rewire. Thanks.

Thank you for this guide! I was originally searching for info on how to thread a twin needle with this machine, but I stuck around to watch the whole video even though you had nothing on that specific feature. (I eventually figured out the twin needle on my own, but then realized it didn't have enough spacing for my project anyway.) I have this exact model sewing machine that I found at a thrift store years ago, and I've been doing regular straight stitch and zig-zags with it to make all sorts of garments, but I could never figure out how to do all the fancy stitches it promised, and I had no idea it has three secret doors, slow speed option, or that my backstitch button isn't broken! So I had a lot of "wow" moments watching this video, and running back to my machine to check all the features you talked about. Sadly though, my machine does not have the B and C plugs for making different kinds of fancy stitches. It only has the A plug that's in the machine. I have no idea if it's possible to find such specific plugs somewhere online, but other than that, no manual and one missing bobbin, it has all the attachments and it's in good condition still. I really like this sewing machine as it's very sturdy and easy to sew with. The mint green color makes it stand out from all the white modern ones as well.

A real fine machine. I use it every day, almost. Beautiful stitch. I sew shirts. I also use in parallel a viking 2000/6440. It has some more useful seams, tripple strait. But the 21e has three nidle positions. I wish it was more, for controlling flat field seams and nearer borders. Both machinens in perfect condition. My wife has electronic Sapphire 960q. But I am satisfied eith mine!!

It runs and purres like a kitten but the sting length is only about 0,1cm even though I place the button at 3(or 5 ) . Any idea to how I fix or if its fixable at all? When I pull the bobbin winder area out to try use the reduction gear, this seems to push on the bit that makes it go into bobbin winding mode. So instead of being able to sew at slow speed, it just stays on bobbin winding mode and the handwheel and needle bar does not move. I'm trying to emulate what you've shown in the video. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Mine just doesnt pick up the bottom thread and i have done everything exactly like the video. I really want to learn how to do this! I don't know what I could have done wrong...
Not sure if this will be seen since it was made 3 years ago. But my mother in law found me this machine at an op shop it works great other than when i attempt to reverse through thick layers (im sewing dog collars) it make a horid click, then the machines refuses to go until i lift the foot and move the fabric and then as soon as i go again it does the same thing. What am i doing wrong?
Nice Video, thanks. You mention that the thread should come off the bobbin clockwise. Does it make any real difference if it comes off anti-clockwise. I've several sewing machines and on none of them does it seem to make any difference which way in I put the bobbin.

It looks like I would need the satin stitch foot to me. If I only have the standard foot, which cam should i use for straight stitch and zig zag? Are extra feet and bobbins easy to find? I've got this husqvarna today - all is fine, despite the button for the stich length and the back stitch, which is stuck in. The husqvarna sews backwards! This video was a huge help, thank you! I inherited my great great aunt’s sewing machine and this video gave me almost all the answers I was looking for. I was wondering if by any chance you would have the answer to my remaining problem with the sewing machine. The needle only stars going up and down when the foot pedal is pushed almost all the way down, and the speed is super fast when the needle starts moving. The slow mode you showed in the video helps but still I have no control over the speed with my foot other than the two modes. I am wondering if the foot pedal is broken or could it be something else/have something to do with the machine itself? Thank you once more for such an informative video
This is such a helpful video! I recently got this machine as a gift from my MIL who is teaching me to sew with it. It has however been broken on the side and is missing the tension screw for the bobbin winding function. Do you know of a reputable place to source this piece? I have searched to no avail for this part. Alternatively, my thought would be to try to wind the bobbin with a standard screw without the tension device. Will that work? I'm considering buying a separate bobbin winding device, but would like to avoid that if possible.
You could hold the thread manually in front and lined up with bobbin so it winds evenly. Make sure to not wind it too tight or too loose. I hope that helps. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this presentation! I received a Husqvarna Automatic 21e yesterday and am excited to start using it. I don’t think it’s been used for ages though and when I plug it into the wall it starts sowing automatically at high speed. Nothing happens when I press the foot controller, it just keeps sowing. I can change the stitch from straight to zigzag and adjust the stitch length but still I have no control of the sowing. A bit too automatic 😅 Do you have an idea of what can have gone wrong and if there’s something I can do to try to fix it? Thanks in advance 🙏
The bobbin winder won’t stop running so my machine won’t sew. It stopped working after I’d wound a bobbin. I’ve cleaned out the bobbin area completely. How can I get it to sew again? Thank you.

DIY tip about missing the tiny plastic oil guide to the pad behind the pulley: I found a syringe whose tip was the perfect size, shape, and material to be a replacement, cut it off the syringe and shaped it to fit, and it's nearly indistinguishable from OEM. I don't know what kind of a syringe you'd ask for; it was one of a dozen-or-so that I've got with cat medication over the years.

Ha, I finally got around to checking over my 21E, better late than never! The brushes are over a 1/4” so ok for now, and all the belts and stuff are very good, no seizing, all levers work. I was excited until i went to thread it…. And ofc, the thread guide is broken! Gah! You wouldn’t happen to have a spare for sale from your parts machines? (I’m in NZ too)

Lovely video and cute kitty. I have this machine from my Grandma (with a German manual!) and the bobbin doesn’t seem to spin even though the belt is spinning. And then removing the bobbin does not re-engage the needle drive at all. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your great and detailed video.
After applying WD-40 and freeing up the parts so they work well, should the penetrating oil be wiped off before applying a proper lubricant? Or can oil just be applied where it is needed. Won't the residual penetrating oil dilute the lubricating oil making it less effective?
I would say WD 40 is a very good product. Lubricant, water displacement and corrosion protection in one can. I think with this ancient machine that you can just start applying normal sewing machine oil. The machine is a sturdy peace of eqquipment so it will be just fine.

Thank you for this guide! I was originally searching for info on how to thread a twin needle with this machine, but I stuck around to watch the whole video even though you had nothing on that specific feature. (I eventually figured out the twin needle on my own, but then realized it didn't have enough spacing for my project anyway.) I have this exact model sewing machine that I found at a thrift store years ago, and I've been doing regular straight stitch and zig-zags with it to make all sorts of garments, but I could never figure out how to do all the fancy stitches it promised, and I had no idea it has three secret doors, slow speed option, or that my backstitch button isn't broken!
So I had a lot of "wow" moments watching this video, and running back to my machine to check all the features you talked about. Sadly though, my machine does not have the B and C plugs for making different kinds of fancy stitches. It only has the A plug that's in the machine. I have no idea if it's possible to find such specific plugs somewhere online, but other than that, no manual and one missing bobbin, it has all the attachments and it's in good condition still. I really like this sewing machine as it's very sturdy and easy to sew with. The mint green color makes it stand out from all the white modern ones as well.

A real fine machine. I use it every day, almost. Beautiful stitch. I sew shirts. I also use in parallel a viking 2000/6440. It has some more useful seams, tripple strait. But the 21e has three nidle positions. I wish it was more, for controlling flat field seams and nearer borders. Both machinens in perfect condition. My wife has electronic Sapphire 960q. But I am satisfied eith mine!!

Hello from Denmark! Wonderful demonstration of the old Husqvarna, thanks for that! I just picked one up a month ago but the sting length doesn't seem to be working? It runs and purres like a kitten but the sting length is only about 0,1cm even though I place the button at 3(or 5 ) . Any idea to how I fix or if its fixable at all? When I pull the bobbin winder area out to try use the reduction gear, this seems to push on the bit that makes it go into bobbin winding mode. So instead of being able to sew at slow speed, it just stays on bobbin winding mode and the handwheel and needle bar does not move. I'm trying to emulate what you've shown in the video. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Mine just doesnt pick up the bottom thread and i have done everything exactly like the video. I really want to learn how to do this! I don't know what I could have done wrong...
Not sure if this will be seen since it was made 3 years ago.
But my mother in law found me this machine at an op shop it works great other than when i attempt to reverse through thick layers (im sewing dog collars) it make a horid click, then the machines refuses to go until i lift the foot and move the fabric and then as soon as i go again it does the same thing. What am i doing wrong?
Nice Video, thanks. You mention that the thread should come off the bobbin clockwise. Does it make any real difference if it comes off anti-clockwise. I've several sewing machines and on none of them does it seem to make any difference which way in I put the bobbin.

I've got this husqvarna today - all is fine, despite the button for the stich length and the back stitch, which is stuck in. The husqvarna sews backwards! This video was a huge help, thank you! I inherited my great great aunt’s sewing machine and this video gave me almost all the answers I was looking for.
I was wondering if by any chance you would have the answer to my remaining problem with the sewing machine. The needle only stars going up and down when the foot pedal is pushed almost all the way down, and the speed is super fast when the needle starts moving. The slow mode you showed in the video helps but still I have no control over the speed with my foot other than the two modes. I am wondering if the foot pedal is broken or could it be something else/have something to do with the machine itself?

This is such a helpful video! I recently got this machine as a gift from my MIL who is teaching me to sew with it. It has however been broken on the side and is missing the tension screw for the bobbin winding function. Do you know of a reputable place to source this piece? I have searched to no avail for this part. Alternatively, my thought would be to try to wind the bobbin with a standard screw without the tension device. Will that work? I'm considering buying a separate bobbin winding device, but would like to avoid that if possible.
You could hold the thread manually in front and lined up with bobbin so it winds evenly. Make sure to not wind it too tight or too loose. I hope that helps. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this presentation! I received a Husqvarna Automatic 21e yesterday and am excited to start using it. I don’t think it’s been used for ages though and when I plug it into the wall it starts sowing automatically at high speed. Nothing happens when I press the foot controller, it just keeps sowing. I can change the stitch from straight to zigzag and adjust the stitch length but still I have no control of the sowing. A bit too automatic 😅 Do you have an idea of what can have gone wrong and if there’s something I can do to try to fix it? Thanks in advance 🙏
Sounds like the capacitor may be short circuiting. That can be fixed by bypassing or replacing the capacitor. Thanks.
The bobbin winder won’t stop running so my machine won’t sew. It stopped working after I’d wound a bobbin. I’ve cleaned out the bobbin area completely. How can I get it to sew again? Thank you.

Thanks. As far as I know, they are quite a specific bobbin so you'll need to make sure any bobbin you buy is for this model.

DIY tip about missing the tiny plastic oil guide to the pad behind the pulley: I found a syringe whose tip was the perfect size, shape, and material to be a replacement, cut it off the syringe and shaped it to fit, and it's nearly indistinguishable from OEM. I don't know what kind of a syringe you'd ask for; it was one of a dozen-or-so that I've got with cat medication over the years.

Ha, I finally got around to checking over my 21E, better late than never! The brushes are over a 1/4” so ok for now, and all the belts and stuff are very good, no seizing, all levers work. I was excited until i went to thread it…. And ofc, the thread guide is broken! Gah! You wouldn’t happen to have a spare for sale from your parts machines? (I’m in NZ too)

Lovely video and cute kitty. I have this machine from my Grandma (with a German manual!) and the bobbin doesn’t seem to spin even though the belt is spinning. And then removing the bobbin does not re-engage the needle drive at all. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your great and detailed video.

After applying WD-40 and freeing up the parts so they work well, should the penetrating oil be wiped off before applying a proper lubricant? Or can oil just be applied where it is needed. Won't the residual penetrating oil dilute the lubricating oil making it less effective?
I would say WD 40 is a very good product. Lubricant, water displacement and corrosion protection in one can. I think with this ancient machine that you can just start applying normal sewing machine oil. The machine is a sturdy peace of eqquipment so it will be just fine.
