When i was in Thailand with my family i first saw this real life i thought it would be a dangerous animal but it turned out to be a butterfly and trust its one of the most beautiful thing to see
I have seen giant moths off the coast of Southern California. I remember in '98 I was a deckhand on an oceanographic research vessel, we were off the coast of Catalina Island. We were visited one night on the ship by a several HUGE moths, they were a foot across, so big! One landed on an outside bulkhead and sat there for several hours unmoving. We were able to get a ruler next to it, a few people took pictures. Brown in color with markings. Never seen the like before, or since.
Dear Ojideagu. Thank you for your reaction. In the beginning I didn't know the difference between a butterfly and some special moths, but they told me that butterflies have thin antennae with small balls or clubs at the end of their antennae and moths don't, although still some discussions going on.
Whoever filmed this has balls of steel. I would most likely deficate my pants if the moth started flying. Now I'm Gona be paranoid for the rest of my life.
Apparently, this being the largest of moths is in terms of wing area but not wing span, in which case the White Witch, aka ..., and Thysania agrippina for sci. name, is largest. It's a huge and beautiful moth though, and it was a very good idea to hold up a pen in order to provide a more precise idea of the size of this insect. Body is tiny compared to the wings and I imagine that it's amazing to watch these fly.
Jesse Plass Dankjewel Jesse. Dat was ook heel toevallig, dat ik die dag aanwezig was en het mocht aanschouwen. Het was pas de tweede keer in 7 jaar tijd dat een Atlas mot in het resort gesignaleerd werd. Een geweldige ervaring.
@KonVeger. The correct name is Atlas Moth or Attacus Atlas. The Emperor Moth is smaller (40-50mm). Nature can be scary, but is is so beautiful. Seeing the world's biggest moth flying around around was amazing. The thin wings and the beautiful colours. We are just a very very small part of it. We should take more care of the nature and learn more from it. Nature does not have to learn from us. We have to learn from nature.
look at the side ends of its wings, they look like pictures of snake heads, to appear dangerous to other insects, where in actual fact, are harmless :)
Rayarena not all traits have to be beneficial in order to propagate throughout a species. Often they can be benign, but that can't be significantly detrimental.
***** The general principal is: It wasn't trying to make a snake. It was random mutation and that mutation proved beneficial. An example to understand the concept better: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppered_moth_evolution
Just found 4 of these in our garden, they are huge and beautiful. had to come onto the net and research what they actually were. oh I am in Chiangmai Thailand.
Dear ArillaStar78. I think you would not run away. From close-up it's even more impressive. The wings are so thin and colorful. If you look well, you can even see 4 "see-through windows" in it.
I grew up hating wasps due to having been stung when young child but have since learned that they're actually beneficial for they prey on truly pest insects. So the "trick" is to avoid being stung by wasps and let them live in a companion sort of manner. And when wasps start invading our homes, building nests in them, then there're harmless ways to keep them away. I forget what these are but looked this up to tell my mother how to rid the house of wasps and it worked. It makes life interesting.
Well, the main difference would be that most moths are nocturnal and most butterflies aren't. Other than that, it's pretty hard to know the difference.
Yes I was really lucky. I knew they had seen one at Marisa Resort two years before. Only saw the pictures that time, but to see in real it was amazing.
We had a Luna moth, Injured sadly, it's tail was damaged, how, we do not know, but it spent about 2-3 days resting right on the wall near the basement window, where, every time we went to go out, we could see it. This thing here, would fascinate, and freak me out. but none the less, fascinate me.
Dear Mike. Thank you for your reactions. I don't fear insects, although I should be more carefull for some. I love nature. We all part of the system. In a good way or bad way.
This thing cannot eat your clothes, as it has no mouth. It only lives for 4 to max 7 days. The one who eats your clothes is very small and white colored.
Bad ways need to stop. People need to learn how to live with the natural habitats of this world. Anyone thinking the world is going to adapt to our bad, ignorant, ... ways is dreaming. We're the only destructive species I know of and this should alarm us but still too many people don't care. I scavenge for finding bottles, cans, ... that can be returned for deposits, so which're refundable. A lot of people throw into garbage what should go into recycling. And people do much worse things.
In the vid-description you call it moth.My moths in the cloth-case are not so beatiful and big :-(( BtW: The wing -ends are immitating a snake-head!To shock aggresors! Great!!!
According to the following Web page, link obtained from the Wikipedia page for this moth, the lifespan of the adult, so the moth, is "about two weeks". naturia.per.sg/buloh/inverts/atlas_moth.htm
They look so gentle that they can actually blown about in the gentle wind. These creatures are cute man!!
So big and beautiful, nature is amazing
Ok so I would basically FREAK out and run off if I ever saw that in real life. D:
When i was in Thailand with my family i first saw this real life i thought it would be a dangerous animal but it turned out to be a butterfly and trust its one of the most beautiful thing to see
That's beautiful and amazing
Fantastically beautiful!
Aspasia Exinya Thank you

Maybe Mothra from Godzilla series was inspired by this kind of moth.
That is SO. COOL. I would love to meet one of these in person some day!
beautiful. i found a luna moth in my house the other day. it was alive. and i'm in texas :)
Yes, nature is amazing and we still can learn from that.

I'm petrified of moths, big this one is beautiful :3
One word that i could comment about this video...BEAUTIFUL! :D
"Oh, you have a camera? Let me just open my wings a bit for you and look fabulous!"
Heel mooi gefilmd! En goed van die pen erbij voor de relatieve grootte!
Jesse Plass Dankjewel Jesse. Dat was ook heel toevallig, dat ik die dag aanwezig was en het mocht aanschouwen. Het was pas de tweede keer in 7 jaar tijd dat een Atlas mot in het resort gesignaleerd werd. Een geweldige ervaring.
if that ever flew near me my first reaction would probably be to run away crying xD But I will admit it is quite gorgeous

I wonder why they have such large beautiful wings? Evolutionarily speaking, how is this advantages to them?

Ashwyn Vinod but how did it adopt a snake's head as a deffense ? how did it know ?

Brian Nelson thank you !!

i think you need to step away and zoom in ...unless it was a phone camera or a webcam. also, it's pretty cool, thanks for sharing.
That's amazing! :D Sooo cute!
If i saw that id scream i have a fear of moths when i see them but not on youtube
I grew up with moths, I could literally be the mothman, I don't care where they are as long as they're safe, same with every creature. and people.
Well, the main difference would be that most moths are nocturnal and most butterflies aren't. Other than that, it's pretty hard to know the difference.
Beautiful But imagine that flying into your bedroom at night WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH :)
Shame that they only live for that long. Such beautiful creatures.
Yes I was really lucky. I knew they had seen one at Marisa Resort two years before. Only saw the pictures that time, but to see in real it was amazing.
If I saw it up close, I probably would have been running... But it's so pretty.
I always thought the patterns looked more like snakes than birds. Either way, it would protect the moth from predators.
This thing is quite common in Singapore. I actually caught one :D. Now it's in my school's bio society :D
That's right Julie. And we should cherish it and not destroy nature.

amagine this being in your room....not that bad i live with a moth in my room.
Lucky I love moths

Go Venomoth! Use Poison Powder!
Still, this is a beautiful moth and I'd love to see one in person ^^
It's a Moth not a butterfly!
Damn I wish they'd live longer they're so beautiful...
Thanks Paul.
That is so cool.
i have a fear of moth and butterflies if someone ever brought that near me id run at least 1 mile
The sad part is these moths have no mouthparts once they hit adulthood and only can live 1-2 weeks at most before starving to death
As "bic" as a pen! get it? get it? ahahahaha I'm horrible at puns. XD
Imagine this guy flapping around your porch light.
I want one... :D They are so pretty... :)
Thanks
Dank voor je reactie.
lol maybe your hand would be a better reference point then a pen lol
Thx.
wow... awesome
think i'd shit myself if that was flying round my bedroom light
so huge -.- and creepy
I wonder how a moth this big deals with predators...
It's only 4 to max. 7 days. It's really a pitty that such a beautifull moth only lives that short.
amazing!!!!
These moths do not have fully developed mouth parts, and therefore they do not feed...they only have an adult lifespan of two weeks.
This thing cannot eat your clothes, as it has no mouth. It only lives for 4 to max 7 days. The one who eats your clothes is very small and white colored.
they are too damn cute.
its beautiful, but still... i wouldn't want it flapping around my lampshade!
imagine how it flies. its like a hellichopper.
It's a moth. Unfortunately I said buterfly in the video.
Thx
Pokemon! Gotta catch em all
Its like its cute and i want to pet it? but its also kinda scary :D
i saw this in my house it stick at the little door i pictured it in my phone now i remember it was atlas
butterfly or moth?
you mean its amazing the things evolution has created.
while looking at the moth its bringing me to a movie call gozila vs moth.
holy crap thats huge 0____0
why such the short lifespan?
If it doesn't bite or sting you, you shouldn't be afraid rink of them as insecticons
Mothzilla
I have no idea why I'm watching this. I have Lepidepterophobia and Mottephobia... Probably to face my fears..
Really true??? Amazing and somehow disturbing!!!
I had to keep my feet off the ground all the way through this video...
I wonder why they have no mouth when they are an adult.
How pretty
kinda looked like the moth that attacked Eggman in Sonic X episode 22
wikipedia and other places says a max of 2 weeks

According to the following Web page, link obtained from the Wikipedia page for this moth, the lifespan of the adult, so the moth, is "about two weeks".

Nice - I only ever saw males. This is a female which is bigger than the male
looks like snake heads on the wing tips. that;s crazy.
Screw that, I hate bugs lol. I'd introduce Mr. Moth to Ms. Shoe :P
