Six minutes of piano solo so far and nothing but supportive grooving from Elvin! Not a single crash hit or drum fill....that’s a lesson in its self!

I was very blessed and fortunate to see him play many times at a place called "Downstairs At The Metropolis Cafe" in Union Square of Manhattan New York City during the mid to late 1990's. One time I even got to speak with him backstage and I shook his hand. It was so powerful that it was like shaking hands with a cement block!
I love how Jones is always smiling as he plays. He utterly creates the perfect rhythmic atmosphere and happily owns it.

I was 23 years old, I decide to leave rave party and concentrate myself on Jazz. It was my first concert, a great summer night in Nice. First part with Elvin, second with McCoy Tyner. I never quit this musique ;)
elvin was one of the happiest looking drummers i've ever seen.

I will add that Miles Davis' apparent deep love for Marshall half-stack electric guitar - with tromp boxes - puts spice to the metal-versus-music argument in this section. No doubt all concerned will examine the work of Pete Cosey RIP, Sonny Sharrock, Sonny Greenwich,.Stern, and the man hisself John McLaughlin - electric guitarists who were welcomed to power-chord (sometimes) their way into that man's repertoire, and into jazz.

Nice camera work, but the lack of full personnel listing is a serious flaw in this otherwise excellent post. It caused a lot of negative comments back and forth. Considering the self promotional credits of the video company in regards to their other roster of jazz documentation with this post, you step on your plea for potential clients and fans. That is an expected obligation for any jazz combo.

Meshuggah? any other number of metal bands that rel on such rythms as their backbone? Describe to me what you think a "real jazz fan" is? I am a musician of over 25 years my friend and I am 33. I have hung out with alot of jazz musicians that I have gone to either rock or metal shows with and let me tell you, these guys respect everything

lol. That's Steve Kirby, I think, one of the more notable bass players from St. Louis where I'm from. I think I actually sat in with him at Cleopatre's Needle in NYC around '01..nothing spectacular, just playing brushes on some ballad.

Only some metal is ok. Like Dream Theatre. But we have to admit that metal is basic rudiments sped up.

Matheus Cruz When Elvin went to Yamaha drums his signature bass drum, for some reason, was 18x18. But for years prior yes, 18x14” deep.

whatever man haha what's the point in debating with you any further? It's obvious your close-mindedness on the subject is making up for something else in your life so have a good one. I will say this though saying you don't listen to metal because they don't use metric modulations and the like is like saying you don't watch baseball because there aren't enough tackles
Yes i have and i hear them demonstrate none of that. I've looked at Meshuggah, and still it's all single, double strokes and thats it. I hear no metric modulations whats so ever. Also, no metric modulations from Meshuggah either. All i hear is just displace accents which is nothing really. And still basic rudiments. A real jazz fan listens to jazz and doesn't listen to noise. We use dynamics. Metal players don't.
Prove you wrong that you re close-minded when it comes to different genres of music? Umm pretty sure you just accomplished that. I listen to 10,000 days from Tool with as much reverence as Bitches Brew's from Miles Davis

Metal is harder to listen to because of how annoying it is, jazz is hard to listen to because it requires more intelligence. Metal doesn't require dynamics, or having a sense of melody, sensitivity or being creative. I'm wondering how legitimate of a music form since no well respected music conservatory teaches metal music. Metal musicians have a difficult time playing jazz and jazz players don't want to be bothered playing metal.
listen to pantera, you will find dynamics big time. groove, swing, polytime, use of dissonance and resolution. use of sonic spectrum. pantera is a gateway band not just into metal, but a gateway band into jazz, like tool aswell.

I heard one of Tool's albums, didn't care for it. It just not my cup of tea. I just checked out Animals As Leaders. Sorry, too much anger. NO soul whatsoever. It sounds like the same licks played over and over. this isn't going to be considered "CLASSIC" stuff 40 or 50 years down the road. Billions of notes doesn't mean better. I wouldn't teach kids this stuff. The guitar sounds too compressed and just not pleasant melody lines. It's an assault on my senses and not in a good way.

Not sure what you're seeing as a sign that he's strung out. To me, Elvin looks like a vigorous 72 year old master drummer, in full possession of his creative faculties, having a blast playing with his band.
Check out his beatific smile as he plays at 4:45. He can hear Eric Lewis is doing great things, and he loves contributing to that. Check out 6:39: the man's dancing as he drums.
Elvin likely remembered this as a really fine day. We're lucky to be able to experience this along with him.
I feel bad that Lewis was playing at such a high level in 2000 and couldn't get a recording deal to document what he was doing then. Also a shame, that this band of Elvin's did not record. ELew was probably the best pianist that Elvin was ever able to hire to travel with his band.
He almost looks too sick to play....tragic...and hard to watch...damn heroin!!
I think you are taking knowledge you may have of his personal history from earlier in his life and and are allowing that to color your perception of Elvin as you watch him perform as a 70 year old.
In this performance, I think he looks vigorous, and is playing with great proficiency. I don't see or hear anything in the performance that makes me think he was impaired.
He WAS a notorious heroin user in his 30's during the time he played with Coltrane. Coltrane was known to sometimes play his horn directly in Elvin's ear to keep him from nodding off during sets. Elvin could be unreliable showing up at the beginnings of nightclub sets, so Coltrane would have to arrange for drummers to sit in until he would show up.
In the early summer of 1963, Elvin was checked into the Lexington Narco Farm, the Federal treatment center for heroin addicts to try to get his habit under control during that period. Roy Haynes was the drummer for Quartet while Elvin was away.
I think it was pretty unlikely that Elvin was using heroin during the decades he was leading his band, Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. It's very hard to lead a jazz band, keep it together and to perform at a high level while strung out.
I can't believe that you cannot see the obvious... that he is doped up big time! Very sloppy with timing mistakes all over the place...That drug is a killer..sad

The woman in the front row with the sunglasses looked as bored as I was watching this. Piano player : flapping your hands with wild abandon on the keyboard doesn’t mean you’re playing. Sax player : tune your instrument. Jeeez these guys sound absolutely horrible.
