This 41K Mile 1983 Buick Electra Park Avenue is one of the Last Great Full-Frame Cars from GM *SOLD*

  • SOLD I still have a love affair going with these big B-Body cruisers, and this is the best sedan I've seen in more than a decade. The Park Avenue badge isn't historical, however, first appearing as a trim level on the Electra sedan in 1977, and not becoming its own model until 1990. Buick is historical, however, having been founded by Scottish immigrant David Buick back in 1899, before ongoing financial troubles saw the company be sold to William Durant in 1906, who turned it in to a cornerstone of General Motors. David Buick came away a rich man, but lost his fortune in a series of ill-fated oil and real-estate ventures. He died poor in 1929.
    Buick, however, thrived, selling large numbers of automobiles to upscale buyers for many years. They are also very international, and sent cars to the elites in China in the 10s, 20s, and 30s, and currently 80% of their production is sold in Asia.
    This is a full review and test drive on the Park Avenue I bought at a collector car auction in Sarasota recently, with a few useless bits of trivia thrown in - for instance, the origin and meaning of "Ventiports," one of Buick's most iconic styling cues.
    SOLD

    Fine Sir, thank you for putting that smug smile on my face by featuring this classic. Having recently acquired a 1994 Buick Park Avenue with Supercharger and embracing a 1986 Cutlass Supreme Brougham for years, I was simply in my glory watching this video. ❤️ My Dad passed on the love for older vehicles like the Cutlass Supreme, Ford Crown Victoria, Ford Fury and Ford Galaxy 500 to me. I even had a Caprice Classic Landau and a another 1994 Buick that got me through my lean University years. Thanks for the great memories! 👍🏻❤️ P.S. Don’t sell this car or you’ll regret it forever!

I couldn't convince my dad on the need for it. However, it had a Posi-track rear axle. Pure Buick of the time and I would have rather had the Regal T Type, but I still loved that car.

    What a magnificent car. These are the kind of cars I grew up riding around in. My parents had an 87 Grand Marquis that floated down the highway and my Aunt had a dark blue 84 Park Avenue. I used to love riding around sitting on those super comfy plush velour seats. They just don't make cars like this anymore. These were the last of the traditional American RWD V-8 powered full-size cars in the purest form. By the 90's, the full-size cars morphed into weird jellybean shapes. Out of all the cars on your channel, this and the estate wagon are the two I would never be able to part ways with.

    2 years later and Bill is revamping his work life…& I’m finally commenting: My dad loved Buicks. He had a Buick Special (I think a ‘64), then later a LeSabre (‘67) and finally a ‘71 Electra Duce & a Quarter…They were all great cars but with GMs foibles: minor mechanicals + fit & finish issues…but we loved them.

    My Dad bought a fully loaded LeSabre Coupe, he custom ordered, in 1979, the last year with a Buick engine. He stored it for 15 years, only diving it in the summer, for a road trip with mom. In the early 2000's, he sold it, without telling us kids.... I was heart broken: I thought he knew how much I loved that car. I was 12 when he bought it and thought he knew by the way I drooled over it.... There was nothing like the ride of that car, the style, and the plushness of those seats.... The sad thing is, those cars lasted since they were so dependable so they were driven into the ground, sold for scrap, and were reincarnated as a Subaru or something. I doubt I will ever find a car like his again.

Up here in NY we say, "It's got da bullet holes." They were sooo popular that guys would buy them aftermarket and glue them on anything, Fords, VWs, whatever. I thought seriously about getting some for my Sierra Ext Cab. OMG - '96 RoadMaster Wagon comin in? I bet yur knees are shakin. That Silverado is history now. After this review we've got yur number. Yur ass belongs in a Buick. Yur a goner. Fuhgitabout it. 997 Turbo-schmuurbo - who cares - where ya goin anyhow? Besides, the 50K service alone will require a second mortgage on the house. About the 'ya know' thing. I wasn't even hearing it 'till you mentioned it - ya know? No issue here. OBTW, about the Park Ave; How does it drive? Or are you still out cruising around Naples with a silly-ass grin? LMFAO.

    The Electra was a C-Body 119" wheelbase, the LeSabre was a B-Body on a 115.9 wheelbase. Four ventiports on each side were on the 1949 Roadmaster and then much later on the Electra starting in 1959. The LeSabre had three ventiports on each side. It didn't signify the engine size, it signified the model.

    I totally get buying up the ladder of GM success. A very successful business model for decades.. My Grandfather started with Chevrolet in 1931, moved up to Pontiac, Oldsmobile after the war,, and finally settled on Buick. He owned Buicks starting in 1956 after owing a 1953 Oldsmobile Rocket 88,.. bought a new Buick every 3 years until 1991, when he bought his last one, a '91 LeSabre Limited.
    He was a successful Accountant, as well as a Mason. What you said about Cadillac being to ostentatious for many people of that era,.. for people with means and money strikes home. He didn't believe in showing off what you have. He felt owning a Buick was befitting for his station in life. He also owned an '83 Park Avenue, in that Dark Beige Purple-ish brown color. He did have the poverty caps removed before taking delivery, have the 'sharp' Buick Rallye wheels and big white walls installed.
    He hated the 307 Old's Boat Anchor as called them, as well as the Olds 403, O remember he became very angry when he discovered that his beloved Buicks began using corporate motors, a 'bait and switch' tactic he called it. ..His favorite engine was the 401 and 425 Nailhead, his favorite he always spoke of when we talked cars was the 445 Wildcat. He was born in 1912 and died in 1993,.. I miss him very much, as my father was never in my life, he raised me, which is were I got my love for automobiles, from him...

    I still drive a 1985 Buick Lesabre sedan to this day- Collectors Edition, so it has those Park Ave cushy seats- and yes, it's the burgundy-red interior. No apologies, no regrets.

    • @michaelemero2922
      @michaelemero2922 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @chief tp I've actually owned three of these '85 Collectors Edition cars, and not had to replace an engine in any. The first got into an argument with a deer that wrecked the front clip, and I wasn't in a position to fix it so sold it instead. The second was a police auction online, where a low bid won me the chance to fly five states over, jump start it, and drive it back sight unseen. Though the ride and interior were excellent, the frame ended up being too rusty to save. Finally I got this one from Wisconsin, and drove it back to Utah where I lived at the time. It's been the most reliable, comfortable car I've ever owned. It hauled all my possessions in a trailer when I moved up to Washington state and has been an enjoyable daily driver with only basic maintenance. I actually got it cheap because the previous owner was sure the transmission was going, but online research convinced me it was simply a bad solenoid from sitting too long. It was a very easy fix, and hasn't given me one issue since then. Even the original R12 air conditioning works. I guess everyone's luck is different?

    • @michaelemero2922
      @michaelemero2922 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @chief tp I've owned this one for over 100k and haven't needed to replace it. Pretty sure the previous ones were original as well. Obviously, your experience is very different, but the 307's are actually fairly well known for their durability, if not their horsepower. Though the low-end torque makes up for it sufficiently for my needs.

    My grandmother always drove Electras, grandpa didn’t like putting on airs so he was strictly a Chevy guy, but they drove the Electra to church, to their club and on road trips. They believed Cadillacs were too showy. Anyway, I inherited her 1980 base Electra when passed in the 1980s and loved it. This Park Avenue same-gen has many trim upgrades inside and out but the base model still floated down the road quietly and effortlessly. And I remember loving the tiny steering wheel and wish you could still buy a car you can steer with your pinky.
    I will suggest that someone take a look at the muffler. Granny’s (then mine) was the entry level Electra and you could barely hear the engine (the same 305) even under hard acceleration. If anything, one would expect the Park Avenue trim to be even quieter. GM never made Buicks as eerily silent as a Caddy, but they came pretty close. Thanks for a cruise down memory lane.

    Dear Bill , please don’t bend to what each and every viewer says about your style of presentation. It will ultimately become too difficult for you to do your presentation because you will be thinking about making mistakes and it will upset your style and may even stop you doing the videos completely .We are all individuals and we all have our own style of speaking and presenting ! For me I never even noticed you saying “ you know “ 👉☹️

    We lived in a small town, my dad owned drug stores, your exactly right, he wouldn’t buy a Cadillac or Lincoln because people would say his prices were to high. There’s had the pull downs.

    My pops had an 83 Buick LaSabre that was dark burgundy with the vynil top on the outside and the red plush velour interior. It looked identical to this Park Avenue. He finally sold it in 2005. The interior was mint but the body was rusting and it had less than 40,000 miles on it.

    I got one of these sitting in my driveway in great condition. White W/ white vinyl top. Very clean with leather interior. No rips and believe its a 1 owner car. It was owned by my moms friends mother, who recently passed away.

    I had a 1978, 1990, 1994, and a 1998. My favorite was my 1990 Electra/Park Ave, with the 1978 not far behind. Mine was Cotillion White with dark red tufted velvet seats and interior.

    The parents of a childhood friend of mine had a coupe with the red velour interior. It was the smoothest riding car I had ever been in to that point. That particular car had an automatic climate control system. It was beautiful, so nice.

    I owned 2 of these. Absolute luxury. One was in cherry condition and the 2nd a winter driver and parts car. They also put Buick V6's in these cars besides the 307 V8. The 252 cu. in. V6 Buick Electra Park Ave was so under powered for these big boats. Miss my 83 Buick Park Avenues. 1984 was the last yr of these big rear wheel drive models. Smoothest ride.

    Like your mention of the 85mph speedometer. Also known as the “Joan Claybrook Speedometer”, because she was Jimmy Carter’s transportation cabinet pick, who helped pass it into law.
    She foolishly believed that if the numbers didn’t go past 85, that people wouldn’t drive faster than 85! 🤣
    Corvette found a loophole using un-numbered dashes, that if you counted the spacing, you could figure out went up to 160! 😎 The only requirement being that the numbers stop at 85, and that the 55 be both displayed and highlighted.
    The law was not very successful, and was actually only in effect from 1977-1981. But the reason so many American cars had 85-speedos up through 1991, was the Big 3 automakers had manufactured such an abundance of these speedometer templates, that they didn’t want them going to waste. So they used them til they were gone.
    In 1996 when the 55 law was repealed- at least in California (I don’t know about elsewhere); The 85 Speedo was truly dead.

    Thanks Mr Bill of Naples again. Nearly spilled my beer all over the keyboard when listening about 'sexual trysts' on the backseat, 'birds pecking eyes out' and 'French whorehouses'. Love the classic B-platform Buick as well and like the history part very much.
