    I’m reading these comments and I’ve gotta say: first of all, not everyone can afford a log splitter, spare tires work too and lastly it’s probably really hard to break a bungee unless there’s a solid surface it’s up against. Oh yeah the chain and bungee cord is way more ez to take out to the woods or wherever. My recommendation is to hit the wood at the edge instead of the middle cuz you do that with the wrong wood or it’s not aged enough it’ll be hard to extract. Cheers Bill

    I grew up cutting wood, we used it to heat the old house. My older brother helped my dad on a two man crosscut until my dad bought his first chain saw, a David Bradley. I can remember before he got the chainsaw, he would haul the logs up and use a maul and wedges to split them up small enough to cut up on the buzz rig. That was in the early 50s. When I was old enough, I took the wood and threw it in the wagon. After he got the saw, we split the blocks with an ax. Anything with knots, we split off the sides what we could, if the rest of the block was too big to go in the stove, it was left. When he got a smaller chainsaw, the smaller limbs that we used to buzz up, we cut up with the smaller saw and the buzzrig went by the wayside. After us boys moved out, we still helped him for several years. Never had a wood splitter until my brother bought one when my dad was about 80.

    It always amazes me everytime I watch one of these videos about the easiest way to split wood, they always have wood that bust like hitting the piece of glass. I don't have anything that easy where I live. :(

    That method works really well on straight grain wood, but you're dealing with a lot of knots or grain with a twist ...I still prefer my 27 ton gas-powered splitter!

    Try a longer chain around several logs without a chopping block. You'll get a more powerful swing and make quick order of the work.

    Seen a few idea to hold rounds together while splitting them, but this is the first one that is practical. I sometimes use a vertical hydraulic splitter. This would make that easier too. No more having to pick up pieces to split smaller. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm just glad you didn't throw it on the ground and then pick it up later. I never got that even with log splitters, they split it throw it on the ground just to pick it up later. nothing like handling it 3-4 times.

    I can understand the merits, how long before your bungy cord gets nicked with the maul?
    Surely if your processing that amount of logs, you would have a tractor mounted log splitter?

  • @timmagee5066
    @timmagee5066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should have began with
    "Hold my beer and watch this"
    Anyhow great idea. Tires are great also. Splitters are awesome for those who have them. I have a splitter but I still like to do by hand. It's a exercise / get away from wife thing. Splitter for when in crunch for time. Or stuff to knotty for hand. It's all about personal preference. Easiest most efficient way to get fire wood done,
    Order it.

    Good stuff! I bought a similar system, but hacked through it quicky. This one looks sturdier.
    If I may ask however... could you please stand a little more safely ... some of your swings look like they're made sideways and man, I can see that axe swinging, bouncing and hitting your legs. Please, please, please - for all of the amateurs out there - make a real issue about safety when posting axe tutorials.
    Thanks!

    that works real good on that wood, but how good does it work on hedge or big knotty locust. With big knots you have to rip all the way through it and that wouldn't allow your maul to go down far enough. Might be good for walnut or oak that isn't knotty,

    • @garychristenson6370
      @garychristenson6370 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rent or buy a gas-powered log splitter for hardwoods such as oak, cherry, maple, madrona ( madrona - for sure - it is NASTY).

  • @fasx56
    @fasx56 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the maul hits the bungee cord you loose and if you hit the chain it would dull you maul and maybe bounce back, whatever works though is cool.

      Why? What would that demonstrate? Red oaks are among the very easiest tree species to split, since their wood is so brittle. Might have to finesse forks/knots a bit, but otherwise wham-bam-done.

Are you just looking for imaginary probs? Lash up the rounds or don't, and just let fly at them. Put concepts into sentences- good exercise.
