Rifle grenades were most definitely a thing, the American M1 had a muzzle mod that allowed a grenade shaped like a small mortar round to be attached to it. It enabled soldiers to put grenades in and around target areas that were unable to reach just by simply throwing grenades.

A prime example was the Churchill tank with crocodile mod, the crocodile mod was basically the cannon was turned into a flamethrower that can reach targets a fair old distance away. Used primarily to burn out resistance fighting from hardpoints, for example from pillboxes or concrete bunkers. It was also a great tool for burning through vegetation if they ever suspected enemy hiding in wooded areas
there were several types of rifle grenades for the M1 garand and springfield rifle. this included a normal handgrenade, an HE grenade, a smoke grenade and anti-tank grenade.

Fun Fact: World at War's Veteran mode has jokingly been nicknamed 'dodgeball' by many fans for how many grenades are thrown at the player. (The game also forces you to objectives by dropping grenades at your feet when taking too long)

It's a common fact that in WW 2 more grenades were thrown, than shots were fired. (at least according to veteran mode)
Call Of Duty 1 and 2 (I don't remember 3 well enough) are even worse with using grenades. The worst times I had was when I had a "defend your position" objective but if I tried to find any good positions to defend I would get obnoxiously rapid fire, inescapable grenades spam. It was like a message telling me "yeah you're playing objective but not the way WE want you to do it"

Rifle grenades were infact a thing and they were very effective at being basically an impromptu mortar on a small target. They go all the way back to WW1. They evolved into the underbarrel grenade launchers we see today.

You just have to keep moving, that’s all. Run from cover to cover, shoot anyone in front of you, keep moving forward. Don’t wait around for them to throw grenades. When they start throwing grenades you’re basically already dead, might as well restart from the checkpoint.

not so fun fact: when i first played this part, i had no idea there was a short, easy way around bunker to the right and fought my way through a battlefield, dying so many times, but eventually making it across and getting a checkpoint. i then looked to my left and saw a tunnel and realized that i struggled and did something that the devs thought was impossible all for nothing
