I wish for a day when he is not heavily criticized by the media, as they don't seem to understand what playmaking is about and how to do it. If your team is not making the runs, not getting into attacking positions, the job is nearly impossible to complete (not saying this is always true at Arsenal, more saying it's something that all playmakers encounter). Furthermore, if teams plan to nullify you by marking with 2, sometimes 3 men all game, of course render a playmaker "invisible," that's their goal! (e.g. Man City against us, or any top team who knows shutting down Ozil shuts down our counters)
you're right, there's been a few instrumental 10s in england, but it's not as embraced as other leagues. The historic English football player prides themselves with hard work, physicality, non stop running (which is not bad thing, this is great stuff too), but they can not just only embrace that aspect of the game. Creativity is important too, and should be embraced and not seen as weak. The problem is creativity is way harder to see on the pitch than hard work when things are going wrong. If your team is playing terribly, you can still see players working hard running with all their breath, even if they are making a lot of mistakes....this can easily be attributed to "playing for the badge, pride...etc." Meanwhile, a creative player in a situation when the team is playing terribly is harder to spot if they have any "determination" because you can't see what is going on in their head, what they are trying to spot, what holes they are trying to open up....they might be giving the same or more effort than the engine runner, but it doesn't show at all if the team is not getting open and the defense is set up to close all the gaps.
It saddens me to see this knowing how the current situation is for Ozil, he needs to be back playing like this, i've always loved & enjoyed watching him play!
