What a beautiful train station. I really love train stations, seeing all the people and thinking where are they headed on their journey. Thank You AK, You're the best!!
Thanks again AK for this lovely tour, for 30 years I have greeted and said, good-bys to many of my loved ones. Really empty today with covid. Glad to see Traxx is up and running. So glad I subscribed.
What a treat!!!! Thanks for taking us here.... I was hoping you'd get to the tracks! I have never been here(Union Station) without it feeling I am on the precipice of something wonderful! 🛤️
@@antoniahamilton3201Very unique architecture because it includes various styles but the architect who designed it did it in such a way that the disparate styles come together and transcend those disparate styles into something magical.
The ticket booths now stand unused. Imagine how many people stood in line to purchase tickets to their destinations back then? Now it's vacant. The bustling noises of people's conversations that once echoed that area have since been replaced by complete silence.
Great video, ActionKid! I'm glad you got to see and film Union Station...I think it's not only one of L.A.'s treasures, but the United States' as well!
The architecture is amazing. A couple years ago I rode the Amtrak out of there going back to the Midwest. I had extra time to kill, so I spent the afternoon just walking around and exploring. The courtyard areas look nice, but homeless people were strung out there. I walked through the underpass end to end. It's likely I'll pass through there again. When I get back from Japan, LA will be my way station home. And it's a good excuse to ride the train.
Good video, but you missed the historic restaurant space. It's next to the first courtyard you showed. I think it originally was a Harvey House restaurant. And, yes, the station had a huge restoration done that was completed in 2020.
There's so few people and much more tidy comparing to New York. And not only in the station. If I were asked, I would say that I'd prefer living in LA instead of NY now.))
The Grand Central Terminal of LA. GCT of New York City was completed in 1913, the one in Los Angeles Union Station or abbreviated LAUS in 1939. Fascinating stuff. They've used this train station in a few movies too. This also reminds me a bit of the New Haven train station in some ways too. AK, you are an explorer by nature 😃 Thanks AK, you were busy on July 20th lol
I remember buying an Amtrak San Diegan ticket in that empty ticketing area in the early 1980s. And it has been empty every since. Off the top of my head movies Catch Me If You Can, Blade Runner, Silver Streak, Star Trek: First Contact, The Dark Knight Rises have scenes shot there.
Excellent tour of Union Station! Between April and June, that courtyard with the fountain is lovely with violet Jacaranda trees in bloom. The violet blooms are enhanced by a typical June Gloom grey sky.
Wow , such an outstanding video . I really like the old fashioned elevator at the end . I've been to this station many times over the years . Starting in 85 when I was a young Sailor in the US. Navy stationed in San Diego . I used to visit relatives of mind in L.A .
Nice walkthrough of Union Station. LA Metro did a great job renovating and updating the station in the past few years. The eastern portal was built in 1993 to accommodate the bus plaza.
Kenneth, I don't know what your agenda is on the west coast, but if you get down to San Diego, take a short bus drive to Tijuana, MX. It's a trip man. I filmed down there in the mid to late 1980s. It's like 42nd street was back in the 1980s, only better!
Honestly, this city is so beautiful... lt is the land of dreams of all who speak in this life. aquí me voy a reencontrar con mi esposa Alexa…. en el futuro contigo una tarde hermosa en la ciudad de LA, por cada vez que sonría al verte, cada vez habrá valido la pena
No, there is only one Red Line. We don't really call it Red rail. Just the Red Line. However, the official name has been changed to the B Line. LA Metro got rid of the color names and replaced them with letters. The lines go in alphabetical order now to reflect the order in which they opened. So, the B line in this case, was the 2nd line on LA Metro to open on the system. The B Line is a true underground subway. Most of the LA Metro rail lines are light rail (at grade) lines with partial grade separations either aerial, underground, or sometimes both.
Trust me when I tell you Covid changed everything. Union Station was packed with commuters before the pandemic. Most people are still working from home. California had one of the strictest lockdown in all the country. Plus California barely opened in mid June.
@@ArtIsDrawing That is absolutely not true! I rode the train for YEARS before Covid and Union Station was congested with people during morning and evening rush hours. That is the honest truth. Do not accuse me of not telling the truth. I was there and I saw the heavy foot traffic at Union Station! MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!
@@JanWhiplash it all depends when he post his videos I guess. Here in Australia we are only one hour ahead of Japan. So if people are watching the Olympics his video posts might just have to wait.
Union Station has a lot of security. It's extremely safe. Leaving it and walking through Chinatown is very safe as well. The area that's not safe is if you walk south between Spring and Alameda. That will take you to Skid Row (particularly between 3rd and 7th). The Metro Red (B) Line takes you from Union Station to Downtown LA (which is a transfer point for trains to Culver City, Santa Monica and Long Beach), Hollywood and North Hollywood (which is a hub for the San Fernando Valley). The Gold (L) Line in Union Station takes you to Pasadena, Santa Anita, Arcadia and Azusa. Those 2 lines run very frequently until very late at night and are very safe. Plus there are a ton of buses that run through it including direct shuttles to the airport
Not seeing what others are who think Union Station looks so beautiful. The interior looks very bare bones "Spanish colonial" style, a style that isn't that great to begin with imo unlike mainland Spain's architecture. Grand Central Terminal is much more impressive and more European style, it just may look more beat up due to the heavy foot traffic that goes through it every day, unlike Union Station, which, as we can see in this video, probably has less people in it during a whole day than GCT does within 30minutes time.
Union station has a lot of traffic go through it every day. This is COCID/COVID recovery traffic you are seeing...Union Station is usually much busier. There has been a 70% decrease in rail traffic in Los Angeles due to COVID.
Union Station is a archictectural hybrid design combining the California Missions with that of the Streamline style that was in vogue during that era. A duplicate of The Palace of Versailles would be lacking in design integrity by comparison. Spanish revival was the design vernacular of California at that time and still is a major influence. There are some stunning examples of this style all through out the West and elsewhere. You have a design bias. Nothing more nothing less.
Union Station has been used as a set for many movies and TV shows. Still retains much of the charm of the golden age of rail travel.
It was featured in Start Trek Generations!
I can see why!
And the 10am and 2pm variants of Pharrell williams "happy" (the first video to be shot in 24 hours).
Such a beautiful station, and so glad to see it getting so much use now and in the future.
It's marvelous! Loved the Art Deco inside.
I recognize this from many movies, tv shows, music videos.
