      But I guess North America has more than 20,000 years of indigenous history while the UK only has about 6000, since the last ice age :) so North Americas history is many times more ancient than the UK

      @Row225 that's not entirely correct, Britain has history of that age as well its just not as easy to find, life was here however for 10s of millenia

      @Row225 It is illegal to excavate native American graves here. It's a way to suppress the history.
      What would Britain know about its past if it was illegal to excavate achient graves? Not much...that is why we know so little about Native American history.

In this case I found myself thinking about the history of cheese.. very interesting. There's a story about a nomad traveling with milk in a bag made from a sheep's or cow's stomach during a warm day. The heat combined with the motion of traveling combined with the bacteria present in the stomach accidentally created the first known account of cheese... its stated the story is likely fiction but still interesting and entertaining.

    This type of history in the ground is so foreign to us here in Australia. Prior to 1788 there was only a few isolated instances of Europeans here. There are shell middens and rock art dating back thousands of years, but no buildings, metal etc because our indigenous people were nomadic hunter gathers in a land of plenty. Love some British archaeology.

    When you watch episodes like this where there is obviously more to tell with more work, does this actually happen sometimes? Is there a way of finding the digs that have then gone on to have more work done on them?

    • @willmc4403

      Sometimes, yes, but sadly not often (budgets). You can try searching on things like the Archaeological Data Service database, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like anything more has been done at this site (I'm not an expert though and have only done a very basic search).

    • @barryhercules7588
      @barryhercules7588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's very little research archaeology done in this country, just a handful of local societies with very limited scope, university departments research projects, or bodies like English Heritage working on their own sites. The majority of work is done as part of the planning process when sites are threatened by development, so unless someone plans to build a new cheese factory on the site its likely to get left largely untouched for future generations. Funding aside landowners generally don't like having archaeologists there and proper research digs can take many years to complete on big landscape sites like this. It would make a fantastic project if a university could get it funded in the future. Great thing is the archaeology isn't going anywhere.

    What kind of arrangement is made with the farmers on these digs? It is interesting that there was a crop in the fields on this episode.

    I love this episode! What I don’t understand (generally speaking) is where the soil covering the Roman and Anglo-Saxon layers came from. In this instance there is suggestion of an accredited layers of alluvial or marsh sediments.
