Instructional video on how to plant amaryllis (hippeastrum) seed. For further instructions contact us at johnstons850@embarqmail.com or visit our website at www.amaryllisman.com
Thanks for the educational on amaryllis, I have a beautiful one (dark fired red) and last year I was just waiting the right time to harvest the seeds, I wasn't at home when my gardener just chop the whole bulb, that was so painful, but I separated the growing bulbs on the sides and now I have 4 more from the same one, they all are about to break in three more days.
For the last several years my mom's employer has given her an amaryllis plant, but they never produced a bulb with seed. They would always just shrivel up. Well, a couple years ago I planted some of them in the yard, and this year the Lord blessed me with one that produced several bulbs with seed. After watching your video, I planted them and they're now sprouting... Thanks so much! I'll be emailing you sson!
Your a amaryllis angel. I've got seeds after years of raising this one bulb that spend to a dozen. Now I get seed pod that is full of seeds. Thank you, I am on my way to planting these precious seeds. 😊
My mother recently gave me some seeds from her Amaryllis: I forgot about them and left them in the little baggie on the counter, and they started sprouting! I've got little green shoots now and have moved them into seedling trays.
straight to the point and educational...I managed to fertilize my blooming amaryllis and I have my seeds and I will be trying this asap. I am so excited! Thank you kind sir...I'll keep you posted.
Just plant the seedlings in a good top soil so that the small bulb and roots are gently covered. Water them often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. After about a month fertilize them with a water soluble fertilizer.
Previously I bring to your notice that I have succeeded germinating two self pollinated seeds. Afterwards I have succeeded germinating few self- and cross pollinated seeds. Thanks.
Thank you 🙏 I just harvested many pos just needed to refresh my memory I used to start them but that was thirty something years ago and I remembered correctly that they liked a loamy soil . Again have a lovely day Take care of yourself in this pandemic I pray you and the family stays well!
I'm a crazy cat lady and also a big Amaryllis fan, there's plenty of crazy cat ladies on TH-cam but this man is a serious crazy cat lady for Amaryllises and we need more of him!
Yes, that is exactly what you need to do, start them now and it will take about four years for your seed to produce a blooming size bulb. By the way, we have a large selection of amaryllis seed -you can order from us through ebay.
I am just learning about after care, mine was waxed , had 2 glorious blooms.... now the seeds are here , I want to know how to plant..... what a great flower to grow
When the pods split open they are ready to harvest and then we keep them refrigerated after they dry out. Check out the video on harvesting amaryllis seeds.
How many years it would take till bulb grows enough to produce flower? I received seeds from "seed exchange", We are in Zone 4. Should I plant them now at the beginning of cold Winter and keep them inside on the window sil or wait till Spring so they can have some natural light outside to get started? Thank you.
congratulations i have some amarillys and they just finished flowering. i am keeping the stem to get seeds. but only a few of the stems have big fat stigma (is that what its called ) didnt know to keep the ones i bought. i threw them away. too bad . didnt see your video until later. i am waiting the one i got. thanks for the video mr. amarillyus
Hi thanks for the great video! I have got my seedlings from water and transplated them to the soil pots but some of them seem to be going wrong now... The top of some of their small leaves are going dry and yellow-ish. Any idea on what could be causing it? I could post a video/pictures if it helps! Thanks :)
We had an amaryllis at my old house and when we moved my mom took the seeds out, unfortunately it's been about a year and we haven't planted them. Any chances they will sprout? Thanks in advance
Is that full strength or diluted? I have amaryllisseedlings that's been up for several weeks but pretty much been using chamomile tea on them to prevent damping off.
I was given some Amaryliss bulbs that were divided off some plants my Aunt Cecelia has at her home in Niland, CA. I planted them in two pots and placed them outside on my patio. I was rewarded with beautiful blooms that were then pollinated naturally by hummingbirds. Now I have the pods which have cracked opened and after watching this great video, I plan on harvesting the seeds and then planting to see what happens next! Thanks so much for your video. Such a blessing to share with us...
Our red amaryllis had at least 25 flowers this year. We let one seed pod alone and I just harvested the seed. I'm going to try growing them. I was wondering how long for them to make a bulb but I found the information on one of your other videos. Very informative. Other video of yours: th-cam.com/video/wPibX0UHj8Q/w-d-xo.html
Do you continue to soak them throughout the 3 weeks until they germinate? If so, why is it important to use sandy, well draining soil? Sorry I am so ignorant. I have some seeds and am so happy to have found your instructions ! Thanks!
I randomly found seed pods one day on my plant and decided to plant 2 seed 2 both sprouts but at that time I don't know it will take that much time to flower?
You probably won't respond as this video is old but I tried the floating seeds in water and 95% of the seed sank to the bottom of the bowl. And only 5 seeds produced plants that I transplanted to soil sand mix
The next time your amaryllis flowers locate the stigma on the blooms when it is errect and dividing into three sections. Place the yellow pollen from the anther on to the stigma. This usually polinates a bloom, inablling it to produce seed. Our ebay store has many varieties of amaryllis seed to purchase.
13 years later and this is still useful. Thanks!!!!
It is our number one of watched videos.

Yes, our store link is in the video description.
Thank-you, the Johnstons
what type dirt/soil and sand , where do you get it
Thanks. If the flower was solid Christmas red, what color will the flowers be from its seeds?
Normally it would be the same as its parent.
@@AmaryllisMan thanks

Good for you!
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, again!
That one seed outside the tray has my OCD raging.
Thank you so very much sir- exactly what I was looking for!

Looks so awesome! All the best! 🎵
Have a fantastic Friday!

So how did it go?
Well I have over 50 varies of amaryllis and have ALOT of seeds form all of them
Hi am very interested in buying some seeds do you have any for sale ?
Just plant the seedlings in a good top soil so that the small bulb and roots are gently covered. Water them often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. After about a month fertilize them with a water soluble fertilizer.
Sounds like you can use succulent soil as an ingredient because it's got sand in it.
Yes
As soon as the seed are dry you can plant them. No refrigeration required
Previously I bring to your notice that I have succeeded germinating two self pollinated seeds. Afterwards I have succeeded germinating few self- and cross pollinated seeds. Thanks.
Excellent! Just got seed pods off plant. I now know exactly what to do!!! Thanks!
Vos vidéos sont VRAIMENT bons. Merci from Québec
Let them grow a while longer. Maybe a couple of months more. Fertilize them with water-soluble fertilizer every other week. Thank-you, The Johnstons

Start off the first month diluted and then move up to full strength.
Doesn't the bulb multiply ?
excellent video! Very clear instructions and easy to understand.
👍😍🌻 amaryllis
Use a water-soluble fertilizer and water weekly for the first three months. By that time they should be ready for transplanting.
Thank you for the great video! I am going to plant my amaryllis seed after they are dried for a couple more days!!
I love it. Thank you. Is it the same I can do with Belladonna Lily?
You are wonderful thank you soooo very much ! luv ya!

Is it possible to pick the pods too early? Mine didn’t fully brown but was busting open
the seed should still be viable.
I bought amarallis bulbs online
I have one plant that has come up from seed. We’re at the end of the summer does it need to be fertilized through the winter?
Yes, do fertilize monthly.
Try floating them on water. If they are viable you will have sprouts in about three weeks.
I am just learning about after care, mine was waxed , had 2 glorious blooms.... now the seeds are here , I want to know how to plant..... what a great flower to grow
I would think so, however, I have limited experience with Belladonna.
Mulțumesc frumos pentru acest videoclip in care mi-ați arătat cum se plantează saminta de floarea
Amarilis.Multumesc.👍👍👍👍🙏🇦🇩🇦🇩🇦🇩✌️
Thank u so much 🙏🏼
What is the appropriate month to plant amaryllis seeds?
Indoor anytime, outside in the Spring when danger of frost is over.
Our amaryllis seeds are drying in the garage-cannot wait to start propagation ❤️❤️❤️
Do the seeds produce the same color lilly as the bulb?
Yes, normally.
Thank you!
How long does the seedlings take before the bloom
Usually 3-4 years.
Our seed pod yellowish and split open. Bit they are not black like yours. Is it ok ? Ours are white with black middle.
How long do u keep the pods to get seeds. And how do you keep them?
When the pods split open they are ready to harvest and then we keep them refrigerated after they dry out. Check out the video on harvesting amaryllis seeds.
Wonderful video. Ashame I took so long to research my seeds. I have several dozen I've collected over the years oblivious they would deteriorate

Thank you so much for the information! I planted mine but the seeds keep popping up out of the soil when I water them. How do I correct this?
Neat!
So excited, my plant has got one pod so now I will plant it! Hopefully by winter I might get another plant!

Interesting! I hope I can make mine work like yours. I love your garden! I am in Florida too!
My seed pods are green still, do I have to wait until they are brown before opening them ??
Very interesting. Is there an update??
Not at this time.
Can you plant them outside in the ground? Also I live in south western colorado
Marvellous - Very clear instructions - Will give it a try - Just dry my seeds - Many Thanks - rosie
When you refrigerate the seeds, do you put them in a Ziploc or plastic container
if you live in country where there is hot weather all year, when do you plant the seeds?
Can you just plant pods and get flowers ?
Have never tried that. It would be a waste of so many good seeds that need their own space.
@@AmaryllisMan Thanks for the input.
yeheyyyy started to transplant my amaryllis. still didnt see them blooom for years already.
Do you think a cacti mix would be appropriate?

Where do you get that sand? I live in Florida too. From my yard?
How long does it take to dry before you can open them?
I am waiting for my bulbs to produce seeds but one of them after the flower is death the seed part started to dry too like the flower and ideas why?
+Joey Cutajar it happened to be last time as well but this time I hang pollinated the flowers and the bulb started to swell.
+Joey Cutajar That is not unusual, some seed pods will not come to maturity.
+Amaryllis Man good to know thanks

Some Verity produce seed automatically but in some Verity Seed only will appear when you cross your lily flower with different Verity of lily flower.
Did he ever obtain flowers from his seedlings?

It took 3 or 4 weeks, but several of the seeds have sprouted - maybe 9 so far and they are continuing to send out little shoots in the water.
Can we grow direct in soil ?
Yes, that will be fine.
Do you continue to soak them throughout the 3 weeks until they germinate? If so, why is it important to use sandy, well draining soil?
Sorry I am so ignorant.
I have some seeds and am so happy to have found your instructions ! Thanks!
Soggy soil may contain contaminants that will rotten the seed. However, moisture is required for seed germination. Thank-you, The Johnstons
This is such a great and informal video
❤❤❤
What a brilliant video, thank you.
Amaryllis Man can i use Osmocote granules?

No, four years from seed to bloom. Thank-you

Amaryllis Man Hi Mr. Johnston, can we order bulbs that will blossom right away?? Ones with flower scapes ready to open???
Do you have a facebook or website where we can admire your Amaryllis collection?

Yes, that is a good method.

AWESOME!
Hi thank you very much for your videos.
Just wondering is it the same of amaryllis and naked lady?
No. Naked Lady is a true amaryllis. What we call amaryllis is actually Hippeasttrum.
Thanks for your reply. I live in australia. Now naked lady flower just fades. I collected some seeds, it's look pearls. Do you how to plant seeds?
@@juneci2674 Plant the seed to a depth about four times larger than the seed. Water well and keep it warm.
Can i germinate it on paper towel?
Yes, that is do-able.
