That Act III cinematic has been seared in my memory for the better part of twenty years. If there's another cutscene in video history that even begins to approach its majesty and power, I'd like to hear about it.
+deejayxcrypt I know laughs and all, but Diablo 3 is simply more in the way of heroic/high fantasy. Diablo 1 has a gothic horror style(but with even less color), while Diablo 2 is kind of a dark fantasy.
Diablo 3 has better graphics, but Diablo 2 (and 1, for that matter) has achieved the unique, eerie, dark and evil vibe that fits so well with the concepts of the franchise. I still remember the chills down my spine when playing Diablo 2 and watching its cinematics for the first time.
Diablo 1 and 2 were eerie as fuck. I think 2 topped it however. The music combined with the gritty and bloody artwork literally sent chills up my spine...
Love the dark and gritty D1/D2 stories, for example, in each someone was impaled with a stone and mentally wrestling with a demon while their body decays away for hundred of years.
Tyrael asked for Marius to take the Stone through the gates of Hell and to the forge where it would be destroyed... now what on earth was on Tyrael's mind to think that Marius could do this??
Well, you must remember that Tyrael asked Marius to do that in the middle of the battle against Tal Rasha... Simply put, there was no one else to ask it to.
Marius is one sneaky bastard...he made it through the whole Kurast, Travincal, and 3 levels of the Durance of Hate without being caught ;) Or maybe the demons/undead weren't there yet until after the HellGate had been opened hehe idk?
maybe the stone can keep little demons from attacking him maybe tyreal put some kinda super angle blessing on him maybe diabio put out words before says Marius is his bro, and forget to take it back. maybe demons/undead cant see you if you are super high all the time..... hell it still dont make sense because he had to take the hammer from butcher's big brother to destroy the soul stone...well i tried.
Blizzard made a mistake making Diablo 3 WOW-like. That is not what Diablo is all about. Look at these cutscenes. There are barely any fantasy movies of this quality. Atmosphere is dark and gloomy, and it has such a rich story. Diablo 3 has non of that. Pity, they could have made a great game.
I am not saying that D3 is a bad game, even thought I don't like it very much. Whoever thinks it's a great game, more power to you. But It's not a Diablo game, doesn't have that atmosphere or story,or anything else for that matter.
+Marko1451 It uh... has 99% of what it takes to make a Diablo game a Diablo game. It's a point and click dungeon diver that takes place in the world of Sanctuary, where Diablo is a major antagonist, and has most of the characters, including characters from Diablo 1 that Diablo 2 didn't even have. It's more of a Diablo game than Torchlight, Path of Exile, and Torchlight 2. Remember that Diablo 2 was criticized for being TOO colorful, too.
I can agree to some of that, but I have to disagree with 99%. The story was god awful, mood was different. Diablo 2 is more colorful than 1 of course, but it had that morbid and spooky feel to it. The gameplay is solid I suppose, and if that is all you want from a game that*s fine. I wanted much more and expected more from this franchise. If we disagree that*s cool, but this wasn*t Diablo I loved.
It is fascinating that every single Blizzard video sequence was far ahead of it´s time. I have no idea how they made it, but the Warcraft III video graphics were amazing too. No game had graphics like this back than.
Baal looked so hardcore in the cutscene where he's walking with the flames behind him. I much preferred him as an eyeless tentacle beast than as the giggling crab thing he was in LoD. People talk about how Diablo 3 is too light in tone but we see the beginnings of that tone shift even in LoD, I think.
Ashanark I prefer the latter Baal of the cutscenes. He has so much more personality with those weird facial and hand gestures and also how he is obsessed with his soulstone.
I just loved this game, and I really want to clear it again and again each time I hear the rogue encampment's theme, that's why I created a video with it and posted it on video response... Nostalgia... I think that no Diablo is going to be a rival for I and II
This was my time of glory and terror, and I was ready to rule Sanctuary above my brothers. I may be free from the Black Soulstone for now, but I will return just as I always have, and I will show Mephisto, Baal, and all of my kin the true Lord Of Terror again in Diablo 4!
I had a lot of fun playing wind-druids (wind spells and ravens maxed) in the past. Never could quite dig animal forms, though. I think it was the animations.
Would anyone else support the notion that Marius is nothing but a gigantic MacGuffin (otherwise meaningless and pointless object or person, which drives the plot forward)?
Actually, I think Marius is fairly close to the player. We are both driven to the east following the wanderer, based on a compulsion we never question. We are compelled to continue the game, to track down the wandered, and do what we feel we must. We, as players, arn't so different from poor marius. I like to see it as actually fairly clever writing on blizzards part, from back when they cared. But, thats just me.
VonDelacroix I honestly think that, too. Also, props to Marius for being one of the few most impressive characters in the franchise. While we had our bug swords and flashy magic, he had nothing but his frail body and nightmares. Despite his demise, somehow I see him in a more elevated plane of being in that his failure to do what we, as the players, would eventually have to do, was juatified for his lack in assets. Seeing as we were infinitely more capable than he, it would be impossible for us to fail
Diablo 2 beats Diablo 3 any day. I mean sure the animation of D2 wasn't that good, but gameplay wise, Diablo 2 still rules. the balance of power, the challenge level of boss fights and the excitement or anticipation during boss fights, everything is flawless in D2
Zantetsukenification To help you in that department, I may have enjoyed playing 3 despite it eating away at our Wi-Fi, but it even beats 3 in the Cinematic aspect. The cinematics in 2 were dark, and dread-inducing, enticing every nerve in the body, while 3's were, despite how epic some of them were, were just that... 'epic' - something that WoW already did
Amazing! thanks for putting this together! I've never even heard the english voices before, but it seems like the german ones were never that much worse (if at all). Makes me even sadder that the series ended(?) with this game calling itself Diablo3...
Why do you think trans people are sub-human, and how does it relate in any way to the idea of making a movie of a game that's already dramatically lessened compared to its predecessor in terms of tone?
doitforthekids1 Man, you're super wrong. Since when is being trans 'promoted', and since when are anorexia and bulimia NOT promoted? You ever looked at the fashion industry or actually popular women in media? Not only that, that's not what schizophrenia is at all. You ever even read the DSM-4 or DSM-5? It's even worse when you bring actual proper brain scans into it - You'd have to argue that having a gender at all is a mental illness. I also still don't see what it has to do with Diablo 2, you weirdo.
the quality of the render-scenes from diablo 2 are better than the quality of beowolf which is meant to be a modern film! And they made them more than 12 years ago...
I'm not going to say that that's the only thing wrong with it compared to D2. D2 had bosses that required you to think, this game has bosses that just require you to stab them a bunch, hardly any strategy until inferno when they just do too much damage to click to death, but regardless, the diablo fight in 2 required kiting and strategy, the one in here takes killing your ghost quickly, then jabbing him a bunch. there are issues when compared to D2, but as a game, standalone, it's still good.
why does baal even ask marius for the stone? couldn't he just have killed him and taken it? maybe he wasn't sure that marius had it on him and he might be need to told where it was?
Because Marius might have hidden it somewhere, and the best way to confirm the location of the stone was to pretend to be interested in something else (the entire story) as someone else (Tyrael). So then as Marius recounts the entire story and believes that this is really Tyrael, who is there to listen to his story and absolve him of his sins, he would gladly give him the stone.
dreamsofmishra Besides, he's a Demon... Don't you think he'd love to see a frail man suffer, wallowing at his very feet before landing him the final blow?
12:42 I never understood how The Wanderer, after tackling Tyrael off the rope bridge, was then holding on to the bridge and climbing up after so clearly falling far down with Tyrael. I compensated by imagining that he grabbed the side of the bridge as he fell after he knew Tyrael went down, but that clearly didn't happen. Typical non-sensical flow of action that we make sense of just because we want to see things continue. Maybe that's some sort of artistic choice, but the departure of reality despite this being entirely a fantasy game takes away from the quality of the narrative. Almost seems like an attitude thing.
Maybe, but it just reminds me of how some stories depend on the momentum of the moment to expect you to overlook those kinds of things. The world has far too many of those things already. Not much point I guess in complaining too much about something that was made 16 years ago.
Hah! I was thinking of writing to Jason but never sat down and did it. Just watched that clip from the sound panel, pretty cool! Never saw that before. Such a shame. This is such a fantastic theme and personally for me a key element in making the Diablo 2 atmosphere as fantastic as it was. They should have released / revisited that theme in some way in the next games. Thanks for answering dude! :)
Totally agree man. Yeh i don't play games at all nowadays, but Blizzard's music on D2 and SC1 has stuck with me for the last 20 years or so. I might actually drop a mail to Jason, I hadn't realized the 20th anniversary is this year, maybe they could do another "Echoes of War" thing like they did around the time SC2 came out. That had some good revisits on some classic themes present on SC1.
I never thought I'd see you reply here but heck, it's an honor sir! Don't wanna repeat myself but, i can't go without saying that being a musician and a composer for over 15 years your music has truly been a huge inspiration! Do get that theme released in some way man - it's worth it!
Actually is there any way I can contact you, I really want to ask you a few questions about composing for games. If you're not ok with that it's totally fine of course! Thx! :)
Notice the way the game ended pre-expansion. It's obvious the ending was unsatisfactory and that the player would have to fight Baal. They planned the expansion at release, which isn't unusual of course, but the story was woven much better than D3. Reaper of Souls in turn feels like a complete asspull. In general, when I listen to the NPCs in D2 I get the sense that whoever was writing the story back then had a completely different idea of what we got now, but it's just a hunch.
Oh I guess the triad of Saturday Morning Cartoon villains was just dandy. When all your characters come off as cheap copy's of Scooby Doo villains then you know something wrong.
I first played Diablo in 1998 as a teenager & I first played Diablo2 in 2004. It's 2018, even today I sometimes play these games, they are such masterpieces. But I must say that I wasn't impressed much by Diablo 3.
you never fight talk rasha. so tal rasha is technically still alive in Diablo 3. so tal rasha can break them out of the dark soulstone. next Diablo game or expansion.
Jimmy J tal rasha contained baal it's heavily implied tal rashas body was destroyed when baal took his true form like diablo and the wanderer so tal rasha is definitely dead
Marius' voice acting is absolutely terrific
A timeless MASTERPIECE.
marius:"what have I done to deserve this?!??"
well... you doomed the world, twice...
That plot twist at the end where Tyrael turns out to be Baal still fucks me up. Also, the story telling was on point back then.
Marius voice acting is just perfect
That Act III cinematic has been seared in my memory for the better part of twenty years. If there's another cutscene in video history that even begins to approach its majesty and power, I'd like to hear about it.
Listen to the German version. it's absolutely tremendous
Diablo 1 and 2 were just the right amount dark n horrifying. Diablo 3 is a cartoon.
+deejayxcrypt not a cartoon..a fuckin JOKE actually..cartoons are way cooler ;)
+asdrubael1985 Totally agree with ya.
+deejayxcrypt D3 destroyed Diablo imo. I still get the shivers when running around in the 2 lasts acts on the second. A masterpiece of a game.
Yep!
+deejayxcrypt I know laughs and all, but Diablo 3 is simply more in the way of heroic/high fantasy. Diablo 1 has a gothic horror style(but with even less color), while Diablo 2 is kind of a dark fantasy.
This is so epic! I grew up in D2 days...this is WAY better than D3...thumbs up!
go away mate
+Hassan ulger Pretty sure he did that one year ago
Hassan ulger Were you born after 2000?
oh the hours spent on this game - and i would do it all over again
You can still spend some hours on it. There's still ladder resets every 6 months.
I especially love the opening music started at the first begninng. 0:05~0:30, especially when blizzard entertainment presents" show up! Anyone agree?
Seriously one of the best stories ever.
Greatest game of all time. 17 years later, and I still play it online.
what happened Blizzard? Why can't you bring back these type of cinematic instead of the cheese ball cutscenes we have now.
Xiyu Yang This is why i stick with my beloved Starcraft.
I agree. Blizzard games from late 90s have this very eerie ambience to it, I was really scared by Diablo 2 and Starcraft back then!
Love the dark and gritty D1/D2 stories, for example, in each someone was impaled with a stone and mentally wrestling with a demon while their body decays away for hundred of years.
The tone of D3 is just all wrong.

maybe demons/undead cant see you if you are super high all the time.....
hell it still dont make sense because he had to take the hammer from butcher's big brother to destroy the soul stone...well i tried.
Brett Symons yeah... I figure since Tyrael can't directly intervene in human affairs and do the job himself I believe Marius was his only option.
Think you need to play RoS.
D3 with RoS is pretty good... i like it much more than before RoS :D

+Van Tran I do from time to time
game is so old, I'm still playing have several perfect characters
+Hassan ulger I just started playing again! help a fellow warrior of light lol
+Van Tran check out slash diablo
just finished kickin' diablos ass
It is fascinating that every single Blizzard video sequence was far ahead of it´s time. I have no idea how they made it, but the Warcraft III video graphics were amazing too. No game had graphics like this back than.
die videos sind echt hammer geil gemacht obwohl sie schon so alt sind^^

the crab baal is talrasha's eccentric mannerisms combined with baal's sass
“Do you want some-zing??” - waiter
Lol so funny
i hate diablo 3 story. this was so good
I just loved this game, and I really want to clear it again and again each time I hear the rogue encampment's theme, that's why I created a video with it and posted it on video response... Nostalgia... I think that no Diablo is going to be a rival for I and II
Baal's animation in Lord of Destruction is beautifully done.
This was my time of glory and terror, and I was ready to rule Sanctuary above my brothers. I may be free from the Black Soulstone for now, but I will return just as I always have, and I will show Mephisto, Baal, and all of my kin the true Lord Of Terror again in Diablo 4!
+Diablo Lord Of Terror You fucking wot m8. I will keep harvesting your red ass for those sweet rares, so don't even think about world domination.
Teh Gwintow-Nikke He's just gonna come back a skinnier red twig than the last timw
Pete Madrona with boobs don't forget diablo had a sweet rack in diablo 3
YOOOUUU SHALLL NOT PASSSS. uhhmmm.... am i in the right movie or a game?🤔
The dark wanderer is "you" from diablo 1.
I had a lot of fun playing wind-druids (wind spells and ravens maxed) in the past. Never could quite dig animal forms, though. I think it was the animations.
I miss having charms that give you buffs when in your inventory... :(

this is just what i was looking for

Would be nice if Tal Rasha was in his purple armor.

Why is a movie not done on this story? So fucking good.

Diablos' story is amazing!
Man diablo 3 sure did suck
dia 3 is a dick turd
Hassan ulger I gotta admit, though I did like the finger exercise it gave my hands, it was a flaming shit pile.
very nice one!!!! good job.
Back when videogame cutscenes did not kill you from frustration.
love this game since 5 grade

kilroy987 Yeah, I guess it's a kind of "rule of cool" thing really.
So much epic
Does anyone have any idea what track of the OST contains the leitmotif played over 8:15/ 13:29/ 18:56 ? Thanks! :)

Much better storyline then in diablo 3...
why is my cutscene freezing from the start ,but audio still going? I have tried searching whole internet& no clue!
it was the warrior of diablo 1, right??
sixsixrevolver the wanderer, yes it was

D2 Cinematics were soooooo much better than D3. The story was also much, much better. At least D3's gameplay was really good.
To bad they didn't do a second expansion after LOD like it was originally planned to be out. We can only now image what happens after the World Stone.

Woot
baal rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who is here after D2r?
hope you enjoy it... wait, it's impossible. get d1 and d2 instead, lower price, better gameplay.
I wish Blizzard stop being lazy cheap asses and remaster these cutscenes to today's cgi standards...the voice acting and lore telling is so awesome :D
you never fight talk rasha. so tal rasha is technically still alive in Diablo 3. so tal rasha can break them out of the dark soulstone. next Diablo game or expansion.

He didn't die tho and he was alive in the lair with meph. And they never showed or said he died. They just implied he was very damage.
***** check the diablo wiki, he is listed as being dead, the same thing that happened to the wonderer happened to him.
***** he was also locked in his body with baal, had lost control that's why his body was demonic in appearance as Baal controlled him completely
i have tyrael's poster

It's funny, I killed Diablo in Diablo1 and then I had to kill myself in Diablo2
then you sir are incredibly blind...
