i randomly picked up orbital from the new releases shelf at the library earlier this year and absolutely loved it. it’s an extremely beautiful and lyrical little novel
I read Orbital earlier this year and found it very thought provoking and definitely “life affirming” as you so eloquently put it! Can’t wait to get to Wandering Stars and James keeps popping up in front of my face so I think it’s time to pick it up too
It's hilarious that Stoneyard Devotional is described as being in the "Australian Outback" it's set about an hour's drive away from where I live in Canberra, The Capital City! People commute to work in Canberra from that area! It's a rural setting not the outback. 😆😆😆 If you want to read "outback" or a book set in a more remote setting read Praiseworthy, set in far north Qld only about 23 hours drive away from Canberra.
2 sentences into Oribital's blurb, the compulsion to stop the video, log into amazon, and order myself a copy overcame me.. no conscious choice involved there, but a complete reflex. my wallet can't even blame me
YES I'm so thrilled Anne Michaels made it onto the list. She is one of my favourite writers. Her writing is exquisite. I've read all her novels and poetry.
I've been wanting to read The Safekeep ever since it came out! I first saw it on Leora Aileen's booktube channel, if I'm remembering it right, Yael van der Wouden was Leora's creative writing teacher!! So that's really cool! Stone Yard Devotional has also been on my list 😊 Love Booker season!!
Charlotte Wood was recently in my hometown for Writer's Week! I loved The Natural Way of Things by her. That's so exciting seeing her book get nominated, hope you enjoy it!
literally foaming at the mouth as i frantically add enlightenment to my tbr edit: and headshot edit edit: AND HELD OMG edit edit edit: A ND ORBITAL....booker prize owes me compensation for what this longlist is about to do to my bank account
Adding all of these to my 300+ TBR ( 😭😭) I'm currently reading Shark Heart which is a surprising potential 5 star for me. Plot: A newlywed couple must deal with "in sickness and in health" in a new way, when the husband is slowly transforming into a Great White Shark. No, I am not kidding.
The first one I know I'm ordering (right now actually!) is Orbital, mostly because Max Porter and Sarah Moss endorsed it. I adore both those authors and 100% respect their opinions when it comes to books. Plus, it sounds like my kind of book--I'm in!
Don't judge a book by its cover? Forget that idea. When I saw the inside cover with the tiles I knew I had to read it. I'm so pleased to see it on this list. Let me know what you thought of it.
I didn't realize Orbital was written by Samantha Harvey! It sounds amazing. I loved her writing and voice in her memoir The Shapeless Unease and have been meaning to get into her fiction, so that's a must read. I usually enjoy a mystery element so Stone Yard Devotional sounds really interesting. And I think Held with its war ghosts might round out my top 3 to read.
Great video on the booker price dozen! I listened to James on audiobook - loved it! I still think about it…the “language” James used to hide behind and the freedom to burst out into his “soul identity.” Great story telling and adventure. Want to read Enlightenment, Wandering Stars, Creation Lake, Orbital, Playground…but really, all books sound so good! I can’t wait to hear what book you choose to read first! 📚
I love how all of us collectively ready to add everything to ur TBR (which i feel we need a new name for coz there is no way any of us is actually going to read that pile 😆)
I'm late to the party but it's been so lovely to find a booktuber who actually reads and talks about literary fiction and not just tropey/simple BookTok romance/fantasy BS ❤
can't believe itś already the 2024 Booker Prize! I remembered when you were talking about the 2023 Booker Prize and I just got myself a copy of Prophet Song😭
I'm just finished my last TBR which was reading 10 books out of my comfort zone and I was thinking like let's made another TBR and I got it now I'm so excited to start with my friends and orbital and The safe keep
After all that, Orbital was chosen. Not a bad book, but honestly was the last book of the shortlist (and then some) that I thought would win the award. Really thought James deserved it, but choosing the only male as winner probably wasn’t the message they wanted to send. I still feel like James will get National or Pulitzer awards.
Genuinely I really hate the ones with just the blurb. They do not sell the book. When you talk about books you read, you sell the book. They need to hire you right blurbs.
As soon as Jack said "I don't really like books set in space..." I was like, what about Orbital? And then it was there lmao
Love how much longer my TBR already feels!!
Proudly watching Jacks Videos since 2019, love to see all the great opportunities that are coming your way! 😊
My TBR is about to POP
im adding EVERYTHING to my TBR !!!! thank you jack im so excited!
So excited to see both Tommy Orange and Yael van der Wouden on this list!
I picked up Yael van der Wouden's book purely based on the inside cover. Am I glad I did 😁
i got goose bumps when the blurb of orbital was read out

Praiseworthy would have been a great pick for the Booker!
I started Stone Yard Devotional last night. I live in Canberra, which is a stone's throw away from the location described in the book.
I absolutely adored Enlightenment. One of my new favourite books. So happy for Sarah Perry ❤
I seriously feel like I revamp my TBR every time Jack puts out a new video
the safekeep and headshot are really calling my name 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫 can't wait to read them

I'm about to start "Day Two". Already hooked.

Love that there were a few books I hadn't heard of here. Excited to read a few of these!
This is such a great list so far!
This is so unhinged and surprisingly intriguing
Truly thank you for this comment, I'm currently adding this book to my 400+ tbr 😅😅
This is just a list of 300 books, right? Not actual books sitting around your Home, right? 😮😊
I loved Shark Heart. I cried. 5 stars for me
I find reading difficult. But I am thrilled that so many people like novels so much!
The first one I know I'm ordering (right now actually!) is Orbital, mostly because Max Porter and Sarah Moss endorsed it. I adore both those authors and 100% respect their opinions when it comes to books. Plus, it sounds like my kind of book--I'm in!
As a dutchie I obviously need to read The Safekeep first! I already wanted to read it, but now it is high on my tbr

I knew Martyr! was something special the second I got my hands on the arc. Can’t wait to see what else Kaveh Akbar writes.
Headshot legit sounds like an incredible read
my TBR is begging for mercy right now (i am deaf to its cries)
My closest platonic friendships are indeed the great loves of my life.
I love how all of us collectively ready to add everything to ur TBR (which i feel we need a new name for coz there is no way any of us is actually going to read that pile 😆)
TBTBR? 😅
I'm late to the party but it's been so lovely to find a booktuber who actually reads and talks about literary fiction and not just tropey/simple BookTok romance/fantasy BS ❤
Safekeep and James -- adding to TBR
Currently reading The Safekeep!!
can't believe itś already the 2024 Booker Prize! I remembered when you were talking about the 2023 Booker Prize and I just got myself a copy of Prophet Song😭
Currently reading James. It’s very good.
Fantastic list, soooo much range!
Starting with Headshot because that is the only one I already have lol but I am super hyped for Creation Lake so I'll try to get to that one next!
yass jack im intrigued too... as soon as i saw "NEW" i clicked
I'm just finished my last TBR which was reading 10 books out of my comfort zone and I was thinking like let's made another TBR and I got it now
I'm so excited to start with my friends and orbital and The safe keep
1/3rd right isnt bad! I'm looking forward to reading them all especially Charlotte Wood.
The Safekeep was the biggest disappointment ever. JAMES for the win!!
Claire Messud wrote about my city? Oh God, Thanks for introducing the books to us, kisses from Salonica😘😘
I read Orbital, and was very moved by it. Enlightenment sounds like a very different kind of book, but I can't wait to pick it up
Richard powers is such a powerful writer. Looking forward to your review of his new book.
So sad that Rachel Cusk is not on the list! 💔
Me too! I really thought she’d make the list.
I am adding Safekeep to my TBR
Just finished Safe Keep ..it got better and better . Great ending
Headshots sounds like literary Hajime no Ippo
Looking forward to iiit
Immediately editing my tbr…
I wasn't expecting any of these books to catch my eye but somehow ended up adding four to my TBR????
orbital sounds so fantastic and conceptual!!
It does seem to be a great list. Strange that Playground will not be released until after the shortlist is announced.
Orbital sounds so good. I love space.
The safe keep sounds interesting ❤😊❤❤
After all that, Orbital was chosen. Not a bad book, but honestly was the last book of the shortlist (and then some) that I thought would win the award. This is amazing incredible list! ❤❤😊😊
Headshot and orbital are two that piqued my interest the most! James is on my list too!
I love space books definitely getting that book called orbital 😀😀🩵🩵🩵
I really thought most if not all on your list would be nominated so I’m surprised that most weren’t.
My Friends is just so good!
The Dutch critics thought The Safekeep to be really mid...
I'm here trying to figure out what the books are from the little bit you can see that's not censored
Definitely intrigued by Orbital.
I WANT TO READ THEM ALL💃💃💃💃💃
hmmm I'd say the one about the girl boxers or the one at the end tickled my fancy the most...
I already own Orbital by Samantha Harvey! I'm going to have to read it soon!
Will our brat make a video about the New York Times List?
can you please make a video on how to read most books in a short time
American Fiction is an Oscar winner for Adapted Screenplay...
i'm going to get There, there from the libary
Everyone is talking about James. It should win.
Genuinely I really hate the ones with just the blurb. They do not sell the book. When you talk about books you read, you sell the book. They need to hire you right blurbs.
To anyone who is confused by the comments, tbr means to be read.
you will be surprised..(first min of watching this!)
The Safekeep. Please read it.
TBR looks longer!
What a fabulous longlist!
James should be automatic ;)
📖🪱💚
Maka te a
No predictions first?!! :-(
He gave predictions for books he thought would be on the list before he opened the box
Does this mean you will finally actually read a Native American author which I suggested years ago? Or are you going to skip wandering stars?
He literally raves about Orange's "there there," all of the time. He mentions it in this video, too, not even 5 minutes in.
