Easily the spin dash. It’s not only a move that encourages players to consider momentum and the physics of the game, it also encourages the DEVELOPERS to design their levels in interesting, physics-driven ways
everyone talks about the spindash but no one mentions the roll. the roll should be a sonic staple but it's not, like it's was what made sonic different originally
Me personally, I kinda have a soft spot for the super peelout. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the super peelout is more powerful than the spindash, giving people more insensitive to use it.
I would say the most iconic Sonic ability is the Roll. When you go down a hill, you can push down on the control stick, and Sonic will go into a ball and go down the hill way faster than he would if he just ran down it normally. This ability made its first appearance in the first game in the series: Sonic The Hedgehog 1, and the last time we saw it was in the most recent 2D Sonic game: Sonic Superstars. I'm a big fan of this ability, and I'm looking forward to seeing if it ever comes back; specifically in the 3D games. Also, on an unrelated note, yesterday was my birthday! I should've come on stream to tell you, but I wasn't thinking about it. 😅
Its gotta be homing attack. Imagine falling and no way to move in the air (dashing in the air is only really to the side and a steady decline) homing attacks can lock on to things above, to the side, or below you to easily travel in the air. The spindash is mainly ground travel, which sonic could do while running and sliding in smaller areas.
5:56 well actually the boost first appeared as a super sonic move first appearing in sonic adventure 2 when they were fighting the blizzard It was also in sonic heroes special stages, Sonic’s ultimate in sonic rivals 1 & 2 and sonic 06 as the blue gem I think.
Tossing this one out here, but I think the Super Peel Out is a really cool move because of how it plays off the spindash. Spindash is both speed and attack, but the peel out is Just Speed, allowing you to hit max accel a lot faster than the spindash, and allowing you to just go faster, for the tradeoff of being vulnerable to any enemies in your way. I really liked that they give you the option and I Think its cool that Even now a lot of media tends to depict sonic at his fastest with that signature figure 8 of the super peel out.
I think the spin dash is the best Sonic ability for me, as well as the boost. Those are the two that I use the most. I also like the drop dash, because it helps. All these abilities make Sonic… well, Sonic!
My favorite is the Insta Shield, why did you skip it? Also I absolutely hate the dropdash, not only is it a spamable boost-like move but in 2D, but because of the way I've been trained to play 2D Sonic since the early 1990s it ends up killing me all the time because I try to chain bounce by tapping jump to make a quick small jump then tap and hold to bounce high on the enemy and chain bounce on enemies, it's exhilarating, but instead I activate it by accident and then spindash to my death, the issue is especially noticeable in areas like Sky Chase, thanks to the dropdash I had to throw away 30+ years of muscle memory and retrain myself, why can't it be disabled in the options menu? Why not remap it on a different button? Why get rid of the far superior insta shield? 😭😭😭
In Sonic Frontiers final horizon, Amy did have a drifting ability while using her boost. I controlled way better than that one cyberspace level but it was limited to Amy only
Something you forgot to mention is that the drift appears in the Sonic Frontiers open world in Final Horizon as Amy's max boost ability. Her power boost allows you to boost and drift just like in Generations, and it's very good in Final Horizon.
For Classic Sonic, I'd say it's the Insta-Shield from Sonic 3 and Knuckes for me. You get you get a protective barrier for only a split second but it deals damage to your extra jump. For Modern Sonic, it's the boost. Yeah, it's a generic answer but the excitement you get from getting even more speed with it is fun
Dont sleep on sonic heroes, you can do some insanely cool platforming if you combine sonics speed from a double rocket accel then use the momentum gathered to jump and then tornado and then homing to reach far platforms. This is soo fun to do once mastered.
sonic frontiers definitely added a ton of new abilities like the cyloop, phantom rush, spin slash, loop kick and many more. but it also added new abilities for knuckles, tails and amy. maybe you could about their abilities and some of the other characters, like silver, shadow, or blaze.
@SonicHubYT sure, but it kinda becomes the entire game. I can't think of a time i dont wanna dropdash... spindashing at least slowed u down so there was a trade off on whether or not you want to do it, but with dropdash there's legit no reason not to spam it every opportunity u get. It will be fun for now, but it will eventually get old and make everything feel samey. It should've been an ability for a separate character. It would've served as a way to make the character unique and different without overly centralizing sonics gameplay. Heck you could even make drop dash specific challenges and upgrades. Its why i didnt add it to sonics moveset in my fangame.
I think if i could choose a definitive sonic moveset i would pick: Spindash (like the adventure 2 one), Double Jump (like the lost world one), the homing attack (with the heroes gimmick) and the drop dash
Couldn't you drop dash in Lost World before Mania? IIRC it was used as a way to chain together spin dashing by jumping to maintain the short speed boost.
@@s-dew That's wild but after some research they didn't find it until 2019 so still doesn't seem like anywhere close to the first time "players" could do it.
@@mezkoo4259 i mean yeah but its the first actual dropdash. Sure the consumer market didnt get it, but Sonic Team already had that idea, they just didnt stick with it. I wonder why though...
Ok so, it's been a while since I have had an hyperfixation on Sonic's moveset, so I just want to to rent about random things I think are interesting. 1st point: an other ability that I thinki is worth noting is the Double Jump, it seems too obvious at first, but it was one of the 3 Shield abilities in S3K, and has became a permanent part of Modern Sonic since Colors minus Generation. As Sonic Team made Amy and important character in 2022 (i think it was 2022?) they made Additional Jumps her main gimmick next to Flying and Gliding 2nd point: I find the one hilarious, people often complain that in Smash, Sonic has 2 Spin dashes, while if you think about that's the most Sonic accurate thing. The Spin Dash, Adventure onwards, has absolutely nothing to do with the Classical Spin Dash, what made the Classic games special was the use of the "down direction," the use of gravity down hill for Rolling, this is what made Sonic special in the first place, the Spin Dash itself was a complementary to Rolling, and was a "down" action Now with transitioning in 3d, Sonic never had this same connection with the "down" because you can't look at it anymore, instead it was replaced by the "forward direction" but the Rolling stoped being a move, and the Spin Dash changed from this "down move" to a "forwards move," which just aims at making Sonic go fast, and of course in that process the New Spin Dash is always changing because it doesn't serve it's original purpose. Which is why I find Smash giving 2 Spin Dashes really fitting despite the repetion, the Down-B is the Classic, the Side-B is the Newer. 3rd point: in the same vein of talking about "forward direction" move, suffice to say the Boost eventually repleaced the Spin Dash, and to me the debate of Spin Dash vs Boost is non-sensical, if we talk in terms of 3d Spin Dash of course, the Boost carries everything qualities making it objectively better than the Spin Dash. The qualities that Sonic needs from his "forward move" are: Damage, Gaining Speed, Maintaining Speed. The 2 abilities fill the Damage part, but the Boost beats the Spin Dash, because Gaining Speed part is instant while the Spin Dash is charged, and the Boost can Maintain Speed any condition cuz the Rolling physics will eventually stop the Spin, and the levels are not design to or don't make anything interesting of the Rolling. So it's just.. more convenient to use. To me the distinction between Spin Dash and Boost is the same as SA1 Light Dash vs SA2 Light Dash, and I think no one misses SA1 Light Dash, so whenever the subject is brought up, I feel people are not discussing mechanics, but a aesthetic, people are arguing whever Sonic should run or roll when going fast, which is fine I guess. Now maybe the Classic Spin Dash and Boost could cohexist??? but the change in dimension physically conitions the design philosophy so I don't tink so. In the case of Frontiers, althought the Spin Dash is fun, conceptually it is just flawed, it's use comes from a problem of the map itself, the distinction between Stage Elements and the Actual terrain, which relates to Sonic's magnetization to the floor, which should not have happened in the first place. Considering if Sonic Team really did listen to us, and if we all unanimously agreed the Terrain and Stage should've been merged, then if in the next game the magnetization problem is fixed, the Spin Dash will have no reason to stay. 4th point: I would really like it if they could integrate Amy's Multi Lock attack (pretty much the Light Speed Attack) into Sonic's next game Homing Attack, it was really fun to use, unlike the Adventure version, that was useless because you needed to charge it on the ground so long, just press the Homing Attack a bit longer and make it immediate, it's perfect like that, just put it on Sonic please for the love of- I don't know why SA2 had the good idea of making the Light Speed Dash instant and way better, but stopped at its offensive equivalent the Light Speed Attack, Amy's Multi Lock should've been giving to Sonic back then.. 5th point: this is a tiny thought I guess but if they want to fuse the Bounce and Stomp again, which was pretty good, i wish they swap the prompt, make it so you tap the button to Bounce and hold it to Stomp, with holding it there's a sense of finality which fits better for halting Sonic, while if the Bounce can be spamed or chained quickly, taping the button will make it spamable and more flexible. I have a lot more thoughts I guess, but this is good enough I think.
In my opinion, Sonic’s best abilities (plural) are the boost, homing attack and drift. An additional move that is great is the hop, which is basically Sonic doing a small leap instead of a full spin jump. This ability allows Sonic to keep his momentum while jumping over small bumps on the road. As for the other moves in this video, the drop dash seems to be a more fitting move for Classic Sonic cause so far using it on Modern Sonic may only give him a much shorter burst of speed compared to the boost. Finally, the jump dash (which is a homing attack without homing in on enemies) should return to future Modern Sonic games since it is a unique move to him; the double jump is overrated and it’s used by other characters in other game franchise.
