    Congrats to your New yacht! It's the exakt choice I would have done if I had the means, good on ya! Meanwhile I look forward to follow you on your channel here and learn from your experience of the new 50. I think you made a good choice not to go för the flybridge with the extra weight and besides the seats looks rediculously low and at the same time gain in sleek looks and more sail area. Only advantages.

  • @rodgoddard6373

    I have taken on and agree with a lot of your reasons for different options. I'm currently planning to purchase a Leopard 50. The person from Leopard (Australia) said the 57 hp motors were ample for the job. I don't want to find down the track that I wish I had gone for the 80 hp Yanmars. I'd be pleased to get some feed back from you on this. Thanks for the videos I have learnt a lot from your adventures and your approach to solving problems.

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rod and thanks for your comment. You need the larger motors. The boat weighs 10,000 LBS more than the 48 and the 48 was adequately powered with the 57's. Whenever a manufacturer offers a power upgrade it is because they know you need it but offer the lower power for cost savings. The salesman has probably never powered a 50 with 57 hp motors and I wonder if they have even built one? You need the HP to handle a 4 bladed prop to get into oncoming wind and waves with enough power. This boat has a lot of windage. These are my thoughts and we have cruised now for 3 weeks on the boat and feel the 80 hp is correctly sized. Good luck! Randy

      Hi Aspergo, How goes the sailing? Randy

    • @aspergo1648
      @aspergo1648 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sailing is thebomb.com To all those who follow this channel, I would like to encourage you. 8 months ago I had ZERO sailing experience. Then encouraged by Randy and Lennie's channel, I went down to my local marina and started sailing. In March I had done 300nm on board a 38' Fast Lyons as deck-hand. I then did an internationally recognised Day Skipper course, which I completed together with a VHF Radio License in April. Next week we (my family of 4) leave for Split, Croatia on our very first bare-boat charter. We will be sailing on a Dufour GL 460. Thanks to SV Happy Together !!!
      Guys, if you're following this channel, and dreaming of sailing, dont wait. Get out there and JUST DO IT.
      You don't have to start sailing on a $million catamaran. You can start out small, like I did.
      To date I have over 500nm, and after Croatia it will be a bit more....
      Fair Winds and following seas.

    Within about 10 seconds you outlaid your plans for the pretty much the next year. Not many sailing channels do that and I think it gives the viewer a reason to stay connected as it were. Just shows that content is so important in relaying certain vital information that draws the viewer back.

    Awesome boat, congrats- A few questions-1) what were factors that caused you to upgrade from 48? 2) Do you prefer Annapolis or Miami for evaluating the most Catamarans at one show? 3) Would you mind sharing costs including upgrades? 4) What was depreciation like on your last boat when you sold it? (all in vs sale price)? Thanks so much for all the great info

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Greg, There was really no reason to upgrade. We did it because we enjoy the process and excitement of buying and outfitting. One day there will be a "last boat: for us but we don't know which one it will be. Annapolis for sure! Our outfitting video gave all the costs but you may have seen that by now. We lost a net of 200K over 4 years. Come to Annapolis! Randy

    If you don't mind me asking, the additions beyond the factory extras, and ya'll would know what's really needed and a good investment, how much, ball park figure, would you say was added to bring it up to your needs? Oh I just love the look, layout and the boat overall.. Yea, I'm jealous.. lol

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew, That is a great question. Its typically about 20% more than the boat cost with factory options. So in this case about 175,000 of options. A few to name....Solar 12K, Watermaker 25K And the list goes on.... Randy

    Congratulations, I can't wait until you do the same video you did for the 48 that shows all the options you selected this go around and what changed from the 48. I also would like your feedback on the 50 as far as will it be to much of a boat to handle for just 2 people, or will you hire a crew or use patreons to help you out.
    From what I have investigated so far, it seems the 50 will be to much of a boat to handle for 2 people, unless you have a full time crew, or will plan on having lots of guests all the time, especially with the larger sails, and that huge swiffer, lol. The 45 seems to me to be the perfect balance for a liveaboard for 2 people and maybe on occasion some guests.
    I don't plan on having large groups as I and my Soulmate prefer a manageable intimate gathering versus large groups.

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, I agree that the 45 is a perfect "big" boat for 2 people. Lennie and I considered it but then decided against going smaller. The 48 is a great boat for a big family but we are used to running it. It will be interesting to see how we like the 50 in terms of size. Its a monster! Randy

    Please, I have two questions:
    1) what is actually the normal time between the order and the delivery of a leopard 50?
    2) is it a bowthruster on the vessel; what is your opinion about this?

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Phillipe, Leopard is usually 9-12 months out on delivery but currently they are oversold and they are 24 months out on the 50 if you order now.
      We do not have a bowthruster nor do we need it. Our 48 maneuvers perfectly without it. I will have to see how the 50 does before I consider it. Problem is its another piece of equipment to maintain and power so I prefer not to have it. I dont think it will be necessary. Thanks for watching! Randy

      HI Tony, On the 48 we dont notice it at all. Maybe on the 50? Either way...THe forward cockpit is worth it as its the best part of the Leopards and why many people buy them. Thanks for watching. Randy

    Just a short question, I see you have gone for the 4 cab berth version , will you miss the full length owners berth & how much & what have you lost out on , Do you think leopard have the right choice not doing three berths now. because owners versions were allways worh that bit more.

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Misha, The option on the 50 is 4 or 5 cabin. They don't offer a three cabin version. Upon inspecting the boat we don't believe we are missing anything because on the 48 it was one big hallway with lots of storage. The 50 cabin is much wider and has a bigger head but less storage. We opted for the utility room in the port forward hull so we are only getting three sleeping cabins. The extra space we had in the master is now doubled in the utility room so for us it works the same with larger more comfortable cabins. Thanks for asking! Randy

    How much more sail area does the 50p have over the 50L?

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jords, It may be only 50 SF of space but more importantly the boom is much lower on the deck so you can access it which is necessary more often than not. Randy

    you said the forward cockpit has a major bonus , how do you use it , what are the benefits ?

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Russell, The forward cockpit serves two purposes. It is where we spend all our time at anchor because usually the bow is pointed to the best view and into the wind so its a great place for meals etc. But more importantly we leave that door open all the time and use it for access to the foredeck so you dont have to walk around and up the side of the boat. For anchoring and getting to the lines and fenders etc. We love it. Randy

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi YM, No it comes ready to sail and has many options but we are adding, Solar, Watermaker, Scuba compressor, lithium batteries, different chargers. Lighting and other features that add about 20% to the boats price. Randy

  • @GuyOnYouTube
    @GuyOnYouTube 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you find the 50 (or your prior 48) to be difficult to manage / sail with just two people? I absolutely love everything the 50 has to offer, but I can't help but feel that it will just be too much boat for a cruising couple. That combined with the extra upfront costs will probably make me lean towards the Leopard 45 when I'm finally ready to configure and pull the trigger.
    EDIT: I just saw a more recent video where you were able to custom configure to get rid of the second story lounge pad. Did that save you anything, or end up costing more because it was not "normal" for the 50? I agree the second area seemed like a bit too much for two people, and gets rid of a lot of practical space for solar.

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jctevere, Thanks for your comment! We think the 48 is a big boat and the 45 is better suited for 2 people but we learned how to handle it just fine. The 50 is an even bigger boat but we are ready for it and travel with guests a bunch so we are happy with it. We did not custom order the performance version as it was an option from leopard. It is a bit less money and weighs almost 1600 pounds less so it was a good decision for us. Keep in touch and let me know if you have any more questions. Randy

    Nice vidoe Randy. Why did you guys decide to upgrade to the 50 so quickly after just having the 48 for 3 years?

    • @SailingSVHappyTogether
      @SailingSVHappyTogether  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard, Change is in our nature so when they offered the 50 with new styling and features we went for it. The 48 was really a perfect boat for us but when you see the stuff we did to the 50 like the utility room it helped us make the jump. Randy

    It's funny my experience with sailboats is in the $2,000 to $5,000 range. Nothing works any more, everything smells weird. Things are constantly swelling up, warping, rusting and otherwise deteriorating at a visible rate. With no fan those inevitable becalmed days turn into an endurance contest of heat and sweat. You keep the rigging and sails and hull in top shape because those are the things that can kill you but otherwise it's basically a used camper from 1970's. All original cushions and rust stains. It's just a different world.
