A dairy house was often set 2-3 feet below grade, venting, and clean. No other products were processed or stored there, no cross contamination. Milk and cream were separated, butter, milk, cheese, whey, creme fraiche, buttermilk. I'd change the separate kitchen to the processing kitchen, rendering, canning, butchering, sausage, potting, beer/wine, honey, cause that stuff is sticky, sticky, sticky, in the house kitchen😮. Wood-fired oven, baking bread, roasting, pizza :), baking, casseroles. The kitchen, smokehouse, wood-fired oven could all be used to generate income with, services, equipment, and or, the space. Greenhouse, for your use and to sell the veggie starts or the vegetables/fruits. Spring house, for cold, cold storage.
Absolutely. Old stories of those going out west would burn down their old barn just to get the nails. How true that is, we'll never know. But it shows the importance
In California on our small 2.5 acre farm, we had a big barn (30 x 45) that had two lean-to wings (15 x 45) on it for tool storage and farrier / blacksmith area. There were two other livestock barns (20 x 25), a pumphouse (8 x 8), and a water tower (10 x 10). Up here in Idaho, there are a lot of potato barns. They dig down four to six feet, until they hit the layer of 'river rock', and then build up. The cover with what they dug out. Irrigation ditch proximity also impacts on how deep you can dig on certain areas of your property. People here are getting 20 x 40 cargo containers to make inexpensive mini barns and equipment sheds. I have one that I will be using for firewood storage without critters making a home in it and tractor protection too. Another one will be a wood working shop. My youngest son wants one for a blacksmithing and machine shop.
Yes very very true. I got lucky mine was small enough that with a few guys pushing and a ride on lawnmower pulling we were able to move it the 30’ or so that I miscalculated!
good stuff. we plan to add another outbuilding here with plumbing and electricity at some point. As you know space is limited in my spot. and getting permits from this city is a task in itself... but its on our wishlist
Oh good luck. I can imagine Mt P is worse than Charleston since the money involved spreads farther. Good thing is if you build it on a trailer frame, you won't need permits
I know you can't have a root cellar, but did you think about a mound house? I could be a two for - dig up the dirt for the mound house and use the hole for a fish pond. Great video another thing to carefully consider is their placement. Practical, safety and hygiene are very important. Great video
I do want a pond. Badly. My biggest issue is the rock. Tons of granite on my property. Can't tell you how many times I had to move fence posts because I'd get 2 ft down and bam, giant rock
i wish I could have basement or root cellar...we are also too wet for that so we make due. I currently have several outbuildings...shop, storage, garden shed, chicken coops (one regular one small chicken hospital), pump house, a 3 sided horse/pig/cow barn, an old airplane hanger to store heavy equipment in .... lots of small buildings...but I figure the ones with storage can always be converted into people dwellings if need be..they have windows and light.
@@ontariohomestead7135 I have coyotes, foxes, raccoons, possums, and the occasional bear every so many years when we get too much rain and they come down from the mountains further than usual.
Many years ago i had the opportunity to buy a hospital back up generator that was being replaced for updating....everytime i think about letting that deal slip by i cry a little lol
Hog shed/ pigsty. Especially with an anti roll bar so mom doesn't smash the piglets. I've never built one nor owned one but I'd be very grateful to tour one

Such a great comment. I'm gonna pin it
Nails. Old timers really valued them. All those buildings will need them. Good video

I see alot of shipping containers these days as well. They really do make for excellent workshops that you can lock!
@@PalmettoPrepared and they are rodent proof too.
Good video !!
A smokehouse in Colorado....
Would have a whole different meaning.....lol
Bahahaha democracy
Love it! Great video, though I do think the solar storage is a must have! It was the first building I made, followed by my cabin!
Oh I believe it. It's also one of those things you can't just throw somewhere willy nilly. Takes planning

Granite . Is it of a commercial quality?

I just wish my land were flatter to be able to have more. Only flat land I have is power line easement and drain fields...
Casa de puppy how dare you forget the puppy lol. good info all around
Bahaha. Puppy stays in the main house. Spoiled rotten
Ikr Privateer....I suspected he's a Silas Barnaby
@@maccabeus-everydaysurvival5828 for shame for shame lol
@@PalmettoPrepared as should be lol
Sorry bud been tryin watch this for over a week maybe later lol
Bahaha no biggie. I'm sure you know most of this stuff
Plus the more out building you have the more lean to roofs you can throw up quick for a multitude of things
Precisely! Where do you think I'm planning on putting my hutches?!
@@PalmettoPrepared that would probably be perfect depending on prevailing winds...on another note what kind of predators you got in your area
@@ontariohomestead7135 I have coyotes, foxes, raccoons, possums, and the occasional bear every so many years when we get too much rain and they come down from the mountains further than usual.
@PalmettoPrepared ok I will keep that in mind may have a couple theories for you that you could modify for your use

I've had similar. Except one was a boat. Deal was too good I was suspicious. Friend bought it. Everytime I see him post on it, I get jealous
@PalmettoPrepared lol well thank God stuff like that happens to other people would get super depressed if I thought it only happened to me lol

Ice House
My climate would make that difficult but above the Mason Dixon line, an ice house would be fairly easy and useful
Yes both of my grandparents had one.
i couldn't imagine anyone down here with a cellar.
No sharing the outhouse. LoL.
Bahaha never share the Outhouse. At least it's not as bad as a portapotty when you get the splashback of the blue water of doom

Good information. But, could you do less just talking to the camera and more showing, please?
I'll keep that in mind. This is an overview. I'll delve more into each outbuilding in future videos
