    Having just bought a 127 AZ GTi, I found your detailed description extremely helpful. What a pity the manufacturers don't point purchasers at exactly this kind of informative material - or even supply it themselves! Many thanks.

      I have a 127 and AZ-GtI. The wonderful "Freedom Find" where Skywatcher have no information on it whatsoever. I've asked so many people and the response I get is "I think its supposed to do this" or "its dual encoders for tracking I think". Why does no-one seem to know how to use this feature !!! Its so frustrating !

  • @Creeno1

    Thankyou for this excellent review. I've actualy bought one (the 127) :). And so far I am VERY happy with it.
    I'm a beginner (although not VERY much a beginner), but found it incredibly easy to align the scope. I'm not terribly impressed with the accuracy. But that may be attributed to me being a beginner with this kind of telescope. In fairness, I've only set it up 2 times at the time of writing this.
    I also bought a sunfilter, and fitted it on the first day of recieving the scope. Much to my dismay, there were no sunspots to observe. None. Zero. Not a sausage. Allthough I was easily able to navigate around the suns surface with the app-control, I was a little frustrated by having to adjust all the time, due to the scope not being aligned (no stars to align with).
    I see there is an option to set up some user defined terestrial positions. But it doesn't seem to be an option to choose that as an alignment method. I'll look around in the app some more to see if there's an answer forthcoming that'll make me slap my forehead :). If anyone can answer this before the forehead slapping ensues, it'll be much appreciated.
    Once again, thanks for a great review. I've browsed a few of your tips videos as well. Definately worth a subscription.

  • @agermangineer
    @agermangineer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done! And very entertaining too!
    However two questions: will the app still work when the manual controller is plugged in? And will the scope still follow the stars when you change to a different app - if yes, at what point will the “star-follow mode” disengage?
    Sorry if I missed it in the video…
    And one note from the wise guy: it would really spice up the video if you used the screen-recording device on your iPhone while using the app in the video. That way you can display the actual screen appearance from the iPhone on a blend-in frame in the corner of this video.
    Nonetheless great work! 😀👍🏻

    Version 1.17.0 of the SynScan app doesn't request permission to use the device location (at least with Android). You must either allow permission in the device settings, or set the location manually in the app. If this isn't done the results are horrible. Hopefully, this bug will be fixed soon.

    which one would be better for long exposure of galaxy? this one or the star adventure pro pack which has a polar alignment and importantly an RA feature? Am I right to assume that the rotation of the heart would still affect wide exposures as this only keeps a piece of the sky in alignment but not the rotation.

    Hi Robert, This looks like a great product for grab and go. I'am in the southern hemisphere and have a lot of trouble finding sigma octans for scp alignment. I imagine this product would just about eliminate manual searching. I would'nt be using a telescope at this stage only a camera for astrophotography so would i be able to align with a camera. Also will this unit track once aligned.
    thank you

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob, and thanks for your message. Yes, it's a nice performer in a very small space and ideal for Grab & Go with small scopes. It's not the first thing I'd think of packing for night sky photography though. Although it will carry a DSLR camera - and lens easily, and aligning is no problem with the hot shoe fit red dot LED finder - long time exposure astro-photography, to any useful degree, is completely out of the question with this mount. The mount 'tracks' well for visual astronomy with telescopes in the range of 500 to 1500mm focal length. However as an alt-azimuth mount (as distinct from equatorial) the tracking motions only function to keep the target centered in the telescope's eyepiece field, and that is a quite different form of 'tracking' from the ability of an capable and solid equatorial mount to effectively delete all the effects of the Earth's rotation to a standard sufficient for extended exposure astro-photography. I hope this helps clarify the strengths of this useful little mount. KR RJD A&NTV

    Astronomy is one of the more high tech hobbies out there yet in 2017 scope manufacturers tout mundane features like built in GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and control via phone or tablets as some kind of premium features. They really should cease with the con of these capabilities being some great technological leap in telescope design and just make it all as common in telescopes as it is in our everyday lives. I mean look at the Celestron Evolution scope. Built in battery and wi-fi but you still have to align it. Then there’s the Meade Lightswitch scopes. Auto aligns but no wi-fi. Really? They can’t make a scope that auto aligns, is controlled via wi-fi and has a built in battery?

    • @RocketPlanet

      Hi there, I tend to agree on some points - it's startling to see latest model instruments still supplied with only serial port connections for use with a PC! Normally only the defence industry is this cautious - or unimaginative, depending on your point of view. One part of the story that is missing here is volume. Telescopes in the 400 GBP/500 USD plus bracket are made in surprisingly small numbers compared with almost any hi-tec modern gadget you care to name. The moderate revenues generated leads to development that tends to be careful and relatively slow. As the price creeps up to over 850 GBP/1000 USD mark the numbers manufactured become almost embarrassingly small. The next suppression factor in play is experience and knowledge. GPS, for example, is not desired by someone who has previously owned an instrument with this feature - they quickly learn that it offers very little benefit to even the modestly experienced user and they will typically not select their second instrument simply because it has this, to them, redundant feature. WiFi is a bit different, I think it is pulling its weight somewhat better and is doing a good job of breaking down barriers for people by making, what are ultimately scientific instruments, more accessible. But it's still early days and WiFi is still only a strong feature mostly among first-time buyers - but that is starting to change. Thanks for your thoughts. KR RJD A&NTV

      Astronomy can be one of the most low tech hobbies in existence....Going out and simply looking up at the night sky is Astronomy....So is looking at the same sky through low priced binoculars...Your comment is simply false.

      Hi Doug - that's a slightly odd but nevertheless polite question, so I'll see your 'is there a cord wrap' and raise you a 'WiFi = cordless'. KR RJD A&NTV

      Astronomy and Nature TV lol excellent response! I’d like to raise the bar and ask if that mount will work with a Celestron C8!

      I think a C8 would be over the recommended max payload for this mount as the OTA alone is 5.7kg. Add a finder, dew shield etc and you are stretching it.

    do you need to be connected to ur own wifi network at home to connect later on with the telescope? or can u take the telescope to the mountain and still be able to connect cause it generates its own wifi network?
    i would really appriciat the answer!!
    thank you!

      Hi there, No you don't need any kind of local network. The WiFi system in the telescope connects directly to your smartphone (tablet device etc). Indeed, the telescope replaces your home WiFi network while you are connected - and of course, you won't be able to access that system for the duration that you are connected to the telescope. I hope this helps. KR RJD A&NTV

    Is he using an iPhone 1 or something?

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's an iPhone 5 - is there I prize for older? The best I can do is an iPhone 3 - I've got one somewhere - but what about a Nokia 3210 or a Blackberry - I suppose they would be outside of the rules as people under 30 have never heard of them? Off-axis questions are fun but I'm not really going to be enjoying myself until someone asks about the role of pumpernickel in the economy of medieval Westphalia - I'm sure I could put that ball away nicely. But thanks for your input anyway. KR RJD A&NTV

      Hi there! Well I try to answer as many questions as I can commensurate with having a little bit of a life outside of TH-cam! Anyway, I'm listening ears pricked - what was your question (regarding the Sky Watcher AZ GTi WiFi mount and only this subject please)? KR RJD A&NTV
