4 years later and the Boks were champs...shows you what a coach can do to transform a group of players into winners... RIP Joost A dreadful day for SA rugby...
By 2007 the 'Boks had added the likes of Percy Montgomery, Bryan Habana, Schalk Burger, Francois Steyn aswell as the recalled Os Du Randt to their ranks. A very much stronger side and, as you say well coached by Jake White.
@@lifegoes2074 Good call! I would add Mehrtens as well. What I liked about Spencer was that he had the full trifecta: Kick, Run, and Pass. What he had against Mehrtens was his ability to Run. Carter was the perfect player and yes he was better, Larkham was unique - it seemed as if he was covered in oil the way he slipped between defenders. Mertens and Wilkinson were better kickers. But my point is his assessment - that is to say his rating.
The underlying problem with the All Black team of this era is they lacked power, both in terms of forward play and also direct running. They had skills and pace galore, but could only play at 100mph and couldn’t grind a game down when needed. For South Africa, their team had been going through such a tumultuous time it was remarkable they even were able to field a team. Both teams improved significantly in the years after this.
@@rh5466 Historically bad results? Controversies - such as allegations of psychological torture, physical threats, and racist outbursts from the coaching staff? 2002-3 was a pretty tumultuous time for South African Rugby.
All of New Zealand, Australia, France, England and Ireland had really talented and exciting back lines. England were probably the only one of those who could play that grinding style when needed. That pack with pre-injury Jonny was very difficult to stop. Soon after the final, Johnson and Back retired, the rest of the forwards went past their prime, and Jonny started having his injury nightmare. England only managed to limp into the 2007 final by ditching some of the underperforming young players and resorting to squeezing the last out of the old-timers’ attritional forward play.
If the Springboks were not such a terrible team with no belief they might have burnt the All Blacks in this one. There were a couple of huge opportunities that, had they taken them, they could have piled on serious pressure on the favourites for this game.
Sadly the commentators are right. Straeuli was a knuckle head. Imagine if Nick Mallet was running the show. Nick was my Prep School rugby coach, huge but highly intelligent man. If the Boks had used their forward power by pick and drive, tight grinding play, ball in hand it could have been different, NZ are canny adaptive team. That’s why they win!
Nick Mallet is useless. He had a good team at the time they won 1998 Tri Nations and went on to have 17 consecutive victories. Don't forget that he dropped Teichmann and Joubert for Skinstad and Montgomery. He also played Jannie De Beer in the semis instead of Honibal.
@@fredperry523 okay? Rassie inherited a very poor performing team. Nick Mallet dropped Gary Teichmann and Andre Joubert and that probably cost is the 1999 RWC. He would have probably been one of the most successful National coaches ever .
54:42 Jorrie Muller passes to Joost and the Boks are in for a try! A career defining mistake. All Blacks probably would have won the game eventually, but this would been a stab into their ever-present underbelly at World Cups for a while.
One of the more useless performances I've seen from my Boks. Little running from the backs with Hougaard uselessly kicking away ball. Numbers of very good players poorly coached. Quite a transformation when in 2004 Jake White became coach.
It’s funny how players develop over time. Bakkies was nothing special in this match, no ‘enforcer’, he was playing against bigger tougher men, he looked like a boy out there.

A dreadful day for SA rugby...
Yes RIP Joost. Watching Joost at the '95 RWC is really what got me playing. No one should go like that.
By 2007 the 'Boks had added the likes of Percy Montgomery, Bryan Habana, Schalk Burger, Francois Steyn aswell as the recalled Os Du Randt to their ranks. A very much stronger side and, as you say well coached by Jake White.
RIP Joost and Jerry
47:46 really miss watching Jerry play.
RIP. #KINGOFPORIRUACITY
watching in 2018 miss Jerry Collins
Omgosh!, #10 Carlos Spencer is in this one. Thanks ❤️❤️
Carlos Spencer. The most underrated player in history.

For a short time only... then was totally outclassed by the likes of
Jonny Wilkinson, Daniel Carter, and Stephen Larkham.

This 2003 All Blacks side is definitely the best side NOT to have won the World cup
Joost rip legend
Aye. R.I.P Joost.

What exactly made it a "tumultuous time"?

@rory7590 u need help ....

2007 and 2011 All Blacks and Springboks weren't allowed to play each other because of Wayne Barnes and Bryce Lawrence fucking up the game.
It's because sa have to win, it's part of the quote system
2007 New Zealand were robbed then 2011 South Africa were robbed World Cup is so rigged.
spencer's skills..priceless
He was crap as a starting 10 was only any good when the game was opening up and few tired defenders at international level was great at super and npc
Watching this again a quick reminder of how good Carlos played

Imagine if rupeni caucaunibuca played for all blacks in this rwc. 11, 14, 15 all played for blues. The year blues won the super 12.
King Carlos
Look how young Dan Carter is on the bench
When he was a rookie
Dan, what about attractive man.....❤

Ja,why eould he accept the job and why would he be given the job ?
What fid he know about coaching rugby ? Absolutely nothing.

Proper one-eyed commentary! fair play.
Great game shame about the semi the following week
Studee1223good to remember thankful
The commentary is absolutely awful
Sounded like they had no passion and couldn't give a shit about the game
Spencer...mais aussi (sinon "surtout") Marshall...
Doug howlett cldnt catch a cold let alone a pass to the bread basket

The dark days for the Bokke with having idiot Straeuli at the helm.
*_It would be great if that commentator occasionally described the play instead of everything else!!!_*
Victor wasnt offside, sorry!
Invisible proportion item heritage music serious.
39:43: "But again they turn it over." That wasn't a turnover, you muppet commentator. They got the bloody throw in to the line out.
commentators absalute mud , thought free kick was a penalty when Kevvy Mealamu scored too
Is it the last match of Joost van der Westhuizen's career?
@Yeah Whatever and don't forget Jonah please...
Rip to great players......😢
Shame on you @thorthgard, you're a vile humanbeing😮
What's this? New Zealand's national anthem doesn't mention rugby.
How many anthems mention rugby, none as far as i know.
Nor sheep XD
9:30 has a commentator ever got so much wrong in so few words? Pen was not by Matfield and he wasn’t playing for Australia.
These commentators got tons of things wrong - were they watching the same game as everyone else, or the one inside their heads?
Some of the Springboks players look bored 🥱.
sa rugby was absolutely awful ! wonder who was the coach

Matfield not offside
All blacks commentator was some of the most bias in rugby can stay nutral, nothing beats old school commentators r.i.p CLIFF MORGAN and BILL MCLAREN 🏉
One of the worst display s of Springbok rugby.
worst springboks ever
I’ve seen worst in the Springboks back in 2017 they lost to The All Blacks 57-0 and lost to Italy 20-18
South Africa’s dumbest coach ever, disgrace to springbok rugby and the players.
Most useless springboks side ever this one
