This is great. We love being in Topeka. Beautiful city, dynamic cultural opportunities, great schools for our kids, and I love the outdoors so the outdoor options are amazing here.
I first moved from Norfolk Va to Kansas in the 80s. Still here. Topeka is an enigma but it is a capital city. I think it had much more charm in the 80s. it feels like it went backwards from that time. There are rare but good pockets in the city. It feels very small but at the same time big because for rural dwellers it’s the place to get groceries and eat out but not too much to offer.
My home town. Topeka is a great place. The Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee is a gem. In late May or June go back and visit the Reinish Rose Garden in Gage Park.
Been here for work the past year, since i got a great job after graduating. From my experiences and opinions of my coworkers, Topeka has a lot of character. There are classic places here and there, but it all seems faded, feels like it was great 30-40 years ago. Nobody is particularly amazed to live here, they all kinda just ended up here. It has a major homelessness problem (even in the “nice” parts of town), half the city is run down and not kept well (besides downtown), crime is way above average (55 in 1000 residents) compared to large and small communities nationwide. Overall, I won’t be living here long term and will be moving on when i get into grad school. I honestly would not recommend living here. If you can, go to the KC area just an hour east to live.
@@channelclark7121 I have lived in one location since i moved here but from what i was told by coworkers and in my experience, any apartments on the west and southwest parts of town by wanamaker are good, they are more of the pricey ones but in my opinion it is worth it. Places to avoid are east and northeast parts of town. Central topeka is random, one block is nice, the next block is bad.
Topeka foundry doesn't even smelt steel any more. Welders try to get into the industry, so they can learn about trains, shipping, and they learn nothing, because welding is just connecting things together. If you want to learn how stuff actually works, you gotta get into metal casting and smelting. Welding is just for buildings and repairs. And retrofitting. Not actual creation of anything new. Very much a Vishnu energy, as opposed to Brahmin. Welding = vishnu. Maintenence Casting/smelting = brahma. Creation.
Thank you so much for doing this wonderful video of Topeka! I fell in love with all of the art here. I host a totally restored historical house I designed, right next to the capitol building if you ever want to explore more. You just got a taste of our amazing community! Here is a video of our house... th-cam.com/video/yX0YCWhqkUA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Hn-i6qC-Z0ARafqy

A lot of b-roll outside of where I work. :)

They tried to fix up Topeka after I left in 1980, but it did not take root. The times I came back, it just got worse.
What got worse, your knowledge of Topeka is slowly closing down because people keep leaving!
My hometown

Is it safe to work in topeka?
I am sure there are worse places. I don’t really know, just visited
Statistically no. Crime is actually above average in topeka when compared to small and large communities nation wide.

Unsafe roads and abandoned buildings. High crime and poverty
