- Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 44
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: • Online Learning During...
This video is just an end of the year- “I am too busy with school to make a tutorial” video! I set up my camera to catch the process I went through to make a commission of bowls for our local retiring teachers in the district where we live and my husband teaches. I started with 5 lbs for each bowl, (that clay, btw was VERY stiff- hence the multiple coning I went through to center) I rounded the interior of each piece when I opened to keep the interior round without a corner. I created a flange as well, by supporting the (wet) outside of the wall with my hand while I flattened the flange with a tool. Once leatherhard, I trimmed on my Giffin Grip. Once trimmed, I applied the underglaze to the flange, and transferred my text with a stylus. When I had difficulty seeing my lines with the stylus, I dusted the underglaze with cornstarch, and traced. This made a visible imprint in the cornstarch I could carve. Once carved, I bisque fired, then glazed using Coyote clear on the underglaze flange, then Coyote Brick Red (a little less than two quarts with 2 tsp added black Mason Stain) It gave me a perfect school color maroon. Once glazed, I fired to cone 5 with a 25 minute hold.
I do highly recommend checking out your local ceramic suppliers… mine is Cornell Studio Supply in Dayton (937) 454-0357 cornellstudios... They are super helpful if you call them directly- they ship all over! (if you call them, tell them I sent you!)

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 21 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/s...
I started my TH-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
Dear Karan, Thank you for all your videos! You are an excellent teacher of ceramics this year! I had a Thank You gift need, and made your (retirement gift) Sgraffito Bowl. Blessings to you! Mrs. Kathi Koester, MN
Hi, Karan! I started a pottery wheel class and have wanted to branch out beyond the very basics, I cannot tell you how much your videos have helped me over the past couple of weeks! I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, you have inspired me to make some things that never would have even occurred to me and I have been so fulfiled and proud of myself. You are such a lovely person and an AMAZING artist! All of the best to you!
I have really enjoyed your videos these last few months. You explain everything so well. I am 81 years old and am just getting back into pottery. Wish I was back in school and one of your students. Thanks for making the videos available to everyone. Carolyn
Thank for sharing 👍. I'm a beginner in pottery and during the quarantine I learned a lot with your videos, then thanks again. 😊
i think i`ve got some usefull action for beginners
And your bowls are beautiful as well 😊
Thank you!!!! :). I was pretty pumped how they came out! ;)
It's wonderful to see you post a new video
Thank you, Renae!!! I've missed being out of the video "groove" these past few weeks!!! :)
Oooo! Very nice, Karan! Yes, the lettering is perfect! I’ve missed you and your pottery talents. Stay well.
Your hair is perfection today!!!
Lol- thanks, Stephanie!!! :)
I know how hectic the end of the year is! I taught kdg for 32 years, and didnt touch cly for the last 6 weeks if school! This project came at the right time for my next time in the studio. Love this!
P.s. your hair is gorgeous!
These are so nice. Thanks for the tutorial.
And new music,so fun.😘
You have the most beautiful hair! 🙂
Awwww- thanks, Lynne!!!
I have discovers that printer ink resists underglaze. I print things out, paint on the paper with underglaze, which pools around the printed letters, then transfer the image into the pot. You have to print it out backwards of course. It often gives a weathered, antiqued look. Just another option to try instead of your meticulous sgraffito tracing (which looks beautiful!)
I loved the red so much I got some and did the same added the black MS. I just got the small container to try it and liked the color but you could see the brush strokes in it. I brushed on two layers. Do you have any tips. Should I add some water to make it thinner. I’ve never used coyote glazes before. The kiln didn’t fire right so they did get fired twice but the glaze never went smooth. Thanks for your help.
I use the biggest brush possible when I brush glazes to get it on evenly. Also, when brushing on smooth surfaces, I brush 3 coats. The big key will be: to what cone you are firing? Coyote glazes are cone 6- and I fire according to their directions- which is cone 5 with a 25 minute hold. If you use witness cones when firing, it will help you to verify the cone temperature reached. If indeed the glaze still has a texture you can feel, I would say it is not hot enough. :).
I would love to see how you do the lettering at a much slower speed. Thank you.
Did you bisque fire the bowl before you did the underglaze & scriffitto? Was the clear applied to the rim with the underglaze only? Thanks😊
The underglaze and sgraffito carving always happens before the bisque- that way you can carve away a bit of the clay... once bisque fired it would be hard and impossible to carve! :) The clear was applied carefully just to the underglazed rim after bisque firing- and I was sure to wipe away any from any bare areas that didn't have underglaze- as I didn't want any white spots of clay showing!
Did you use a special computer program to do the lettering on a curve?
Hi, wonderful videos to watch, very inspiring!! So thank you very much!
I would love to try it too, but how do you get the cutting out of the letters on paper? Just by hand? It almost seems to perfect for that...could you please let me know? Thanks again, love Johanna
Around 10:30, I demo how I took the printed out letters and traced them onto the rim. It’s better when the clay is a little wetter- mine was a little too dry- so I dusted with cornstarch so it would make a visible line when I traced... the. I cut with a small tool.
Ta!
