- This was our first time leaving Jack for more than 24 hours and it was extremely difficult! We went to Lake Powell with Sarah's family which was a TON of fun..but we experienced something super sad while we were there. It's weird because it was one of the most fun, yet most sad weeks we've had! We're still in shock at what happened. Let us know in the comments what suggestions you have to help us prevent this situation from happening again.

I've been watching your channel for a few months, but have never commented. Everytime I watch one I just feel proud. You're amazing loving parents, and Jack clearly shows how happy and content he is. When he grows up he's going to remember how you were always smiling in his presence, and truly desired to spend quality time playing with him, and teaching him. 40 years ago, the family "trunk" of pictures and keepsakes, suffered (beyond repair) water damage. Lost it all... So I understand your pain. Even tho your phone is sleeping with the fishes.. you are blessed to live in an era of having a "back up" which I am sure you will immediately get for the next phone.. With all this, as we say in a Boston accent, "smaht" phone, you never know what you still may be able to recover with help from your cell provider. Sebago Lake (ME) lake tip #7 if you take yr cell in the water, use a floaty case for it. We made ours out of a pool noodle 🤓. Sorry I rambled.. you have a beautiful family.. your son is so handsome, y'all spirit and energy are awesome ☮️💚😊

We left our son with my parents the first time. He was 6 mo. old. It would be the beginning of a beautiful love between him and them. I don't think he missed us. Mom made a little schedule including taking him around their small town in his stroller everyday. Most of those people are gone now but live on in his years of memories of them. I understand about the photos. I now have 3 large archive boxes full of generations of our families. They are the first things I take with me if I have to evacuate because of a hurricane. My newer photos are backed up to iCloud. I pay $2.99 a month and still have lots of room for more. It was good for both you and Jack each taking a vacation. You are very special parents. Almost as special as Jack.

When my daughter was a year old we updated our computer from windows 7 to 10. It dumped all of her birth photos to that day. None of it could be recovered and it still breaks my heart. She is 11 now and I still think about it

My kids did modeling when they were little and I lost the three nice books with beautiful pictures but then that guy always do it is I asked God if I could see them in heaven.

Leaving your child at that age for 1 wedk enjoyment to break free from the hardship of having a baby is not a love. The separation anxiety you can cause and regrets does not come at the beginning it always ends up in the end. A child does not have the ability to speak to inform is not worth to be left alone. It is more about a Responsible Parenthood. You can have breaktime an hour but for a week. Damn and the reason is too lame.
I'm sure between all the people in your family there are still a lot of photos of Jack of every month of his life. Just ask everyone to send you all the pictures they have. We love you 3.
This is a great idea, it wont replace all the personal memories but it can close the gap that has been lost for him to look back on when he's older.
You two have become parents in your souls. You will now make all vacations accessible to jack. Hahaha. I was the same way my first long vacation after my daughter was born. Wanted to run home the second day!! Missed her too much. I understand👍❤❤❤❤❤❤.

You lost photos of Jack, but you didn’t lose Jack. Treasure the memories you have in your hearts and minds and please get a cloud account that backs up automatically. It wouldn’t have helped on the lake but it would have had your other photos. Ask family and friends for copies of their photos
I know exactly how it feels guys!! My husband and I went to a Jamaica last December for a week. My mom and her fiancé stayed with our boys. Our littlest one who was just over a year, had been teetering on his first steps the week before. We were at a beautiful dinner our second night of vacation and I get a video from my mom. My baby’s first real steps. I started crying in the middle of the restaurant! Our babies are precious. But time away is good for mom and dad. 💓💓

As much as I love cell phones this is one reason I loved cameras and actual pictures. I’m 54 and still pull out my old photo albums and reminisce , I love the feel of photos.
I left my daughter for 10 days when she was 10 months old to go on a business trip and hated every moment of it. When the plane landed I was hopping over people to get to her. I know how you feel!
Memories are hard for you lose them with technology but you know what heavenly Father he is allowed you to keep the memories that you lost in your mind's eye and in that camera your mind's eye you will never lose them Sarah! You are such a beautiful woman of God indirectly he made you and Derek in his image! You are a beautiful family! Phew. I'm so glad it isn't the saddest thing. You have each other. I lost my house in a fire in 1999. I thought I lost so much, but stuff can be replaced.
When my second son was born, I borrowed a camera from my sister to put in my hospital bag. She put a film in and from the moments after he was born, my husband and I were clicking away, the camera got to 25 prints and was still going and so I assumed it was one that held 36 pictures but at 36, it kept going. I was starting to panic so carefully opened the back of the camera where the film lives and to my horror I saw it hadn't been loaded properly. I was so upset, remembering each picture I thought I'd taken, looking forward to seeing the actual print and realising it didn't exist. I lost almost the first three weeks of my babies life. My son is now 24 and I still feel so sad at not having those pics.
I'm glad no one was hurt physically. I'm sorry that you lost the phone/photos. Photos are such a precious way of holding on to memories.

I know exactly how you guys feel. My phone got stolen at six flags a few years ago and I had probably 3 years worth of photos saved on an sd card of my kids and my daughters first birthday. I cried so much for a few days but as soon as I started taking new pictures I felt better. It really stinks but you guys are so right, there are worse things.. 🥺🥺😢😢

I understand you guys whole heartedly, phones hold so much importance in our lives now. All my photos of my 2 year old son is on my phone and I can’t transfer the photos onto a laptop because of some stupid reason.
If you can reach out to a diver and remember the area you were at when the phone went into the water. I’m sure they might be able to help you.
I email every picture I've ever taken to myself. One sure way you'll have them. Try that and download them to your laptop and in turn to a USB stick.
What type phone do you have?
Why not upload the photos to GOOGLE PHOTOS?
Try just uploading them to Google drive from your phone, then they'll be on your Google drive on your laptop as well
transfer them pics to facebook or instagram.

I know all too well a loss of videos and photos not able to replace or save. Another one is the last voicemail of my first born at the age of 20 calling me to wish me a Happy Mother's day. That would be my last time to hear her voice. I lost her within days in a car accident. I kept that voicemail for years and in an instant gone. My heart broke feeling another loss. But God was merciful. He showed me in a dark moment of grief hearing her voice saying Mom you ought to see me now!!! I turned to see her for a brief few seconds engaged in the most powerful love and peace in God's presence. That will be a lifetime memory and experience I will never forget...future home in the purest peace no pain full of love and joy. Alicia was almost luminous so beautiful she gave me such peace through God like lifting a veil to see in the heavenly dimension.

No matter how you back it up just make it part of your routine. I have a lot of important photos and videos on my iphone and my iPad. After losing it all once 9 months ago and that also it was of great sentimental value I immediately started to schedule syncing and backing up all of my devices so it would not happen again. Just schedule it weekly (or how ever often you would like) and always stick to the schedule so that it becomes routine. Look at it this way-now that you have forgotten once and lost valuable photos and now have forgotten it again you will more than likely remember to back your information up because of the loss. And think of it, you could have lost so much more information had this not happened. It really sucks but you are not likely to let it happen again thus saving so much more. You guys are great, you have a really lovely family. 🥰

I feel for you. I had the similar thing when my daughter was young. Our computer died and we lost all of our photos from age 2-4. All the cute videos we had. FB was in the early stages- so I was new to posting stuff. I begged for friends and family to send bt email whatever photos they had. It felt like my house burned down. I cried for weeks. Then I realized we have the best thing. We have her. We do have some photos.. so grateful for that. We learned a hard lesson and now have an automatic backup thing. backs up every night. Highly recommend it

When Derek holds Jack up high over his head I hear the Lion King music in my head. Also..... When we went to Hawaii a couple years ago, I found a water resistant clear phone holder with a floaty thing on it. I could still take photos and videos with the phone in the pouch. I'm thinking maybe y'all need to get those as much as you're on the water.

I feel you, I thought the same thing when I started watching. Sarah has a sister with an almost identical family but with a little girl so that’s probably who you’re seeing. Her sister’s channel is called Lo Beeston so that’s how you can check. Hope this helps!

Oh so sorry for your loss. Stories like that are the reason, why I secure my photos at least twice: On my computer and on an external storage. By the way: The most durable method to secure photos for decades is still to print them on paper. It is much more durable than any electronic method and later in life you will be sooo happy, to have them. I highly recommend it.
You guys! Memories are in your hearts and minds!! Plus you still made footage. Plus your boatbuddies probably have tons of footage too. Plus you have records of every frown and smile of the three of you on social media.

For the first 5 years of my sons life I stored everything on the computer - pregnancy and birth photos, first haircut, every birthday, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, trip to the fair and pumpkin patch, preschool trips, museums, all the fun things we did. Literally thousands of pictures and the computer got a virus and they were all lost. He's 16 now but I still wish I had them. Now I back up everything to the cloud but it didn't exist back then so they're just gone😔

I understand totally. You are grieving the loss of those pictures and videos. And that is a valid feeling for you to have.
Even though I still have my old cell phone, I can't get it to open my videos, audio or pictures of our youngest.
Even though I would love to find someone that could get all that off the phone and saved, I am also terrified of someone trying but accidentally erasing it all. I keep telling myself that even though I cannot see the videos and pictures or hear the audio of my bug that at least they are still on that phone. I go back and forth between wanting them but scared of losing them. Haven't seen or heard them in 10 years now.
I can only hope to be such happy, & equally amazing, parents as both of you two

I live in Holladay Utah. My husband and I started going to Lake Powell when we were 16. We have been going there for 50 years. I think I've had more at fun Lake Powell than just about anywhere. Utah is one of the most family-friendly States and we take care of each other especially in the church😇🙏💖

The first child it's always hard to say goodbye to him or her.. Well Grandma and Grandpa take care of him or her.. but that's part of the grandparents delight..who better to leave them with.. one day little Jack will be 17 or 18 and moving out of the house.. and it will be you two..the most idyllic and perfect situation will be that you two are just as in love as you are now.. children are a gift from God to take care of until they fly off and fulfill their destiny.. my sons are 41 and 45..I see everybody once a year and that's a blessing that I even get to do that ..so yep ..enjoy one day at a time with grateful anticipation.... as everything can change in a heartbeat..🙏💕

You're kidding, right?! Every now and again it's totally fine to have a break from your kids! It's healthy to do a couple trip! Not all the time.... but this time it was fine! 😒 Don't be judging. It's hard being parents and it's fine for them to take a break from being "mom and dad" and just be "them"

Really??! If your world revolves solely around your children, after your children are grown up and gone you will be left with nothing in common with your spouse and that’s why a lot of divorce happens. You must keep your relationship with your spouse first and foremost.

And what about households with two working parents who sometimes have to work 40 plus hours a week to make ends meet. Or a single parent household where the parent has to work 40 plus hours a week to barely survive and the child is babysat with the parents? Is that “selfish”? Grow up.
